SUMMARY

The Development Of Maritime Health In Solving Public Health Problem In The

Marine Environment Of The Island Province Of Maluku

The Moluccas region is one of the Islands in Indonesia with vast oceans,
and has 1,340 islands. Spacious large oceans as well as the large number of
islands make Maluku province has its own characteristics in social, economic,
educational, and health problems of the society relating to the sea. There are 31
million poor people in Indonesia and about 7.87 million people among them are
fishermen and coastal communities. Maluku province alone according to the data
of the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries, there are 88,836 people working as
fishermen and 26,055 people who work on fishing boats. This state indicates that
the people who live in the coastal areas in terms of their economy was in poor
condition, this means they are vulnerable to various diseases.
Health problems that are found on the sea-island community are hearing
loss, stung by venomous sea animals, accident while diving, decompression
sickness, diarrhea and malaria. One of the aspects that has an important role in
this problem is the maritime health. The concept of maritime health include health
problems on the islands, the handling of the health of seafarers who work on ships
as well as the health of divers.
As the province where the people lived on the island as well as the vast
majority of people working as fishermen, it is necessary to have a great attention
from the local government. Maritime health has changed from a discipline to the
needs that must be met by each maritime region, Maluku province is no exception.
The development of maritime health in Maluku province would be very beneficial
for public health in small islands.
This scientific paper uses the method of the observation of phenomenon
and the study of the literatures. Methods of analysis used in this paper is a
descriptive analysis that is analyzing the existing problems of the observations or
the identification and study of the literature about the problem as well as the
relationship between these problems based on scientific concepts or relevant
theories.
There are many different strategies that can be done in the development
of the maritime health in solving public health problem in the marine environment
of the island province of Maluku.
In Indonesia, faculty of medicine University of Pattimura in Maluku
province is the only faculty of medicine with the vision as a centre for the
development of physician education oriented on the marine environment of the
island. Education at the Faculty of medicine, University of Pattimura, already
preparing and implementing this program in order to produce a reliable doctor in
maritime regions, especially in isolated small islands, and the island that lies on
the border countries, regardless of the existing conditions in the small island.
Telemedicine is an indispensable device in the development of the
maritime health in Maluku. The perceived advantages of telemedicine is to make
it easier to get information about health, health care, medicine, diseases that exist
in the sphere of sea and islands, so that the community can be early to prevent or
treat the disease suffered.
In the development of the maritime health in Maluku province in terms
of health services in the sea is also noteworthy. This is related to a ship that has
facilities that support the maritime health service for the sailors as well as coastal
communities that are far from the center of health care.
Medical examination of seafarers health and health promotion also have
an important role in maritime health. The purpose of the medical examination is to
ensure that seafarers are examined medically fit to perform routine tasks at sea
and not suffering from any medical condition that might be aggravated by service
at sea, so as to make it not feasible or harm the health of other persons on board.
The conclusions of this scientific paper is Maluku province with the
characteristics of the seas and islands has a variety of public health issues and
need to develop health-based maritime (maritime health). Maluku province should
develop maritime health by utilizing existing resources, such as the faculty of
medicine in University of Pattimura which has a vision as a center for the
development of sea island-oriented medicine.
