CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A mobile phone is a device that can besically make and receive

calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It

does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone

operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. The ancient

types of mobile phones support limited services such as calling,

messaging, and taking few pictures. However, the modern phones

support a very wide range variety of other services apart from making

and recieving calls and messages.

Mobile phone is one of the most rapidly growing new

techonologies in the world. In 2001, smartphone users were less than a

billion worldwide with the majority of the users from the developing

countries. By the end of 2010, smartphone users had reached five billion

worldwide subcriptions from contrries outnumbering that of the

developed countries. Obviously. This increase a sharp increase in the

number of cell phones used by the younger generations. This area of

interest was chosen because of the unregulated usage and over

dependent attitude on these devices especially among our secondary

school students. Interestingly, this is obviously imperative observed that

the youth have consistently displayed higher level of attachement to

their mobile phones which could serve as distractions to them because

of the time channeled to the phones.

However, in recent years, different types of smartphones have

been produced by different phone manufactures. Each comes with

different features for specific functions. We have different variety of

moblie phones as named by their manufacturers, they include,

Samsung, Nokia, Sony, Blackberry, Huawei and so on. We now have

those that can make video calling, ping, pictures or photographs, surf

the internet and lots more. They are also built or installed in different

capacities, mode of operation and features/applications. The latest kinds

of mobile phones widely used by both young and old, epecially among

students.

This study therefore, attempts to find out the impact of mobile

phones/cellular phones use among students on Junior High School on

their academic performance.

RATIONALE

The positive effect of using cellular phone in the academic

performance of the students helps to engage in their studies. Helping

them in doing their research, homework, and it is more convenient

because of the modern techonology there are lots of ways for them to

study easier and less hassle. Just research and then print when

compared to the old ways, you’re going to write it and go to the libraries

just to check or look for the information needed. But it also has negative

effects, the focus of the students are split into playing mobile games

instead of doing their homeworks or projects that was given beforehand.

They spent more of their time playing mobile games, surfing the web

and browsing through their social media accounts rather than surfing the

web that has useful informations that they can use for personal or

academic use. Also they spent their time in front of their mobile phones

or computers exposing them to a large amount of radiation that may

cause health issues; spending too much time on their phones, they

neglect to eat in proper time. Overusage of cellular phones may prove to

cause problems especially if you are spending your time surfing the web

until late at night and sleeping late. This proves that you will lose

attention to your studies and given the situation health issues might

arise.
OBJECTIVES

 To know the effects of long usage of cellular phone in

students.

 To identify the advantages and disavantages of long usage

of cellular phone.

 To know what are the factors affecting the academic

performance of the Grade 7 students.

 To know the proper use and misuse of cellular phones to

their academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What is the statistical profile of the student in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. What are the effects of cellular phones to the academic

performance of Grade 7 students?

3. How do cellular phone affects the performance of students?

4. What are the purposes in consuming time using cellular phone?

5. What are the purposes of cellular phone in academic

performance?

6. What are the activities they always do in their cellular phones?

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

Student’s perspective of the use of mobile devices for their

learning to underline that challenges faced by educators to develop new

learning and teaching methods as most of the students as well as many

teachers oppose challenges in learning and teaching methods. In fact

,they find themselves alien to the new learning culture. Secondly, most

of the students fell that the new technology oriented resources and

training are not able to meet the individuals needs of students. The

authors highlight that the technological, psychological or even

environmental barriers prevent students from selecting mobile devices

for learning activities.

The perception of the parents about the use of mobile devices

and mobile genre is defferent from the common perceptions. The

interest of the schools to engage students in mobile learning is

increasing in bring your own device, and in increasing the use of digital

tehnology. The perceptions of the parents greatly matter as they can be

a prime contributor in the new concept of learning. But their attitudes

differ, depending on gender and grade level of children. However most

of the parents accept that mobile applications and devices not only offer

fun, but also can help students communicating, connecting and

engaging ways of learning , they open up new opportunities for students

, but they are skeptical about the use of these devices for pure

entertainments.

The teachers have a different perspect on the use of mobile

devices for students learning. According to them mobile devices can be

used for different purposes such as communications, productivity

,educational and management purposes. The teachers think that mobile

phones can be used for motivating students for homework and inspiring

action. Teachers believe that mobile devices are useful to evaluate

social abilities and cognitive abilities of the students.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

(2010) Pointed out that excessive use of dependency on the

cellular phones maybe considered an addictive disorder. In order to

address some of the issues attached to cell phones researchers chose

different area of interest and teasing them out.

Javaid et al. (2011) conducted a study on University students and

use this splendid mobile technology in a better way by sharing

helpful information with their class fellows and teachers.

They use the cell phones to share the helpful data with their

classmates, to confer dictionary and thesaurus for educational

reasons. Walsh (2012) conducted a study that under the topic “cell

phones”..

Students using smartphones to expand their educational

experienc: The second research objective aimed at understanding

how the use of smartphones expands students’s educational

experience. The findings indiated things, but they all have one thing

in comon, which is to chat across different social networking sites to

expands students’ learning esperiences. According to Kuznekoff and

Titsworth (2013) regard in chatting as one of the benefits of using

smartphones.

Cell phones as communication devices serve a very potent and

imperative role in the academic setting. Hendrikz et al (2009) carried

out a study on the effects of SMS on distance students’s

performance at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The findings

of this study is significant in that it shows that cell phone use can aid

the learning proceses by simplifying

the communication between students and their lecturers.

Ravinchandran (2009) study shows that a mobile phone is a total

blessing to human life as it provides a collection of communication

media which add value to the quality of human life. A mobile phone

is a combination of a clock for time management, a calendar to

manage a daily activities, a camera to take pictures and build

memories, a music player for entertainment, a radio to keep one

informed of the latest happenings and is an Internet device to surf

and download items and therefore, it is percieved as a mobile

library.(KUSS; GRIFFTHS, 2011). In classroom, students engage in

surfing web, social networking, checking, emails and text messages

and consequently pay less attentention to their lessons.

(Samaha, Hawi 2016). The awareness of possible negative

consequences of smartphones usage certainly reduces the overuse

of cellular phone. Few studies have been articulated the impact of

cellular phone addiction on students’ academic performance.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive and survey methods of research will be used in

this study. Descriptive studies are usually the best methods for

collecting information that demostrate relationships and describe the

world as it exists. A survey comes in different flavors, be it

interviewing people face to face or handing out questionnaires to fill

out.

SUBJECT OF THE STUDY

We selected 30 students out of 600 population who will response

for our needs. Is to fulfill our survey questionnaires, that will guide us

for our research and studies that we conducted. The 30 respondents

are from the grade 7 federation has three different sections.
