be presented in Diary
Video the form
Entryof a documentary or in the form of a
visual diary entry. Your video should include both visual and audio elements. The purpose of the video is

The Big Idea- Sustenance

Sustenance is defined as food and drink regarded as a source of strength; nourishment.

As the population grows and our resources deplete it is important to recognize how we retrieve
and use food to provide nourishment to ourselves. We should also consider how consumer’s nutritional
needs are met if accustomed to a specific diet. During food recalls, what are consumers to do when they
depend on the food industry to produce quality food for sustenance? Should consumers start growing
and raising their own food? The idea of sustenance allows one to explore their relationship with “food
and drink” by bringing awareness to how food and drink” is produced and distributed.

Topics to consider:

Reflect on and investigate:

• What foods and drinks you consume? How your selection of food and drinks provide
strength and nourishment for you?
• Do you know where your food comes from? Have researched the food industry?
• Think about the ways you acquire and prepare food. Where do you get your food?
• Think about how you or your family uses food for sustenance
• Think about your preferences when acquiring and eating food
▪ Do you prefer organic food? What type of diet do you follow?
▪ Have you heard of GMO’s? Seed patents?
▪ How does the government shutdown affect food in the U.S?
▪ What are your thoughts about agriculture and farming?
▪ How do you feel about the meat industry?
▪ What are your thoughts about growing your own food?
