1Akkalkot: A township in Maharashtra, was a small kingdom before the independence of India. Shree
Swami Samarth, presided over here after travelling all over India, which is how He got his name as Shree
Akkalkot Swami. His holy scripture Guruleelamrut, by Shree Vamanbuva Vamorikar, in chapter 20,
describes the meaning of Akkalkot. “Akkal” has multiple meanings mind, intellect, wisdom, thought,
memory, desire. “kot” means fort, fencing/barricade of a place or land with small or large entrances to get
in, to protect the people inside. In here “Akkalkot” means the fortress of mind, intellect, wisdom, thought,
memory, desire and “Akkalkot Swami” is the God, Master of this fortress

1. Nurturing the Oblivious

Shree Swami Samarth continually showers his blessings upon those that seek his
benevolence. What follows is a story of an elderly gentleman, who never in his
70-years of life remembers of any association with Shree Akkalkot Swami but
when he realized what Swami did for him, he was left with pure gratitude for
Him.

The story narration unfolds the fact that sometimes a common thread that binds
people together causes the Divine Power to take all connected under His care.

“When I was around 70, suddenly one day Shree Akkalkot Swami came in my
dreams. I saw that Swami was glowing with a kind of ethereal light and I sensed
that he was brimming with divinity. Seeing so much brightness, I spontaneously
woke up and realized that this was just a dream. After this incident, knowing
that the idol in the dream was of Shree Akkalkot Swami, I found Swami’s sacred
biography and read it. Until then I did not know anything about Shree Akkalkot
Swami beyond some photos and pictures that I had seen.

A few years later, I started feeling the negative effects of my heart disease. To
take care of my health, I moved to Pune and stayed with my son. Here in Pune, I
was introduced to a professor at the university. A few days after this brief
introduction, the professor came to meet me and asked whether I was suffering
from any heart disease. I was stunned because I hadn’t mentioned this to him at
any time and there was no link between me and this professor that would have
caused him to know that I had heart disease (you don’t just publish your medical
history anywhere, of course). After responding affirmatively to his question, the
professor further asked whether I was a devotee of Shree Akkalkot Swami. I
promptly replied, saying that I didn’t think I was his devotee. Surprised, the
professor asked me a third question (which startled me); he asked if I was sure
there was no connection between Swami and me. He said that he was confused
as to why Swami so much concerned about me. I had no idea why this was the

10
||Shree Swami Samarth||

case and was confused as well. I didn’t know what to say. The professor said, “I
have a message for you from Swami. Even though I have only just been
introduced to you, Swami has asked me to convey this message to you. Swami
says that you have to read the Lalita Stotra3 as a remedy for your heart disease”.
He further said, “I am only a messenger, and we don’t know each other much.
And of course, I did not have a clue about your heart disease”. After this
interaction, I started looking around for Lalita Stotra in the market and could
not find it anywhere, not even a single copy. One fine day, a family friend got the
book and gave it to me. With the book in my hand, I started reading it. From that
day, onwards, my heart disease started to reduce considerably.

The book helped me a lot, but what was still unanswered was the connection
between me and Swami. The answer to this revealed itself in an unexpected way.
I was at a family friend’s house where I met a spiritual guru. The guru asked the
same question that the professor had asked me earlier, “What is the connection
between you and Shree Akkalkot Swami?” I told him about the dream I had and
about the professor. The spiritual guru further asked me, “Do you have any
spiritual items given to your family by a guru?” I started recollecting, and
remembered that there were a few items. I replied, “My grandfather had got a
Gurucharitra 4 book, religious slippers and a coconut. 30-40 years later, the
coconut broke; the slippers were misplaced when I moved, though the holy book,
Gurucharitra is still with me”. The spiritual guru said, “Yes, there is one
connection. The guru who gave you these items to your grandfather was a
student of Shree Akkalkot Swami. From that time, onwards, Swami was
watching you. But that is not the only connection, there must be another. Is
there anyone else you met?” I started recollecting old memories, and
remembered one more instance, “My grandfather had once introduced me to

3 Lalita Stotra: It is a divine text in praise of Goddess Lalita, a form of Goddess Durga, the Goddess of
Shakti (power)
4 Gurucharitra: A holy scripture on the life of the primordial guru Shree Dattatreya. A 52-chapter

scripture with a given method of reading and following a holy life during its recitation. It is said to uplift
spiritually those who recite and grant their wishes in tough times

11
||Shree Swami Samarth||

another guru, Dev Mamledar5. He had come in my dreams some time ago as
well.” The spiritual guru, immediately said, “That’s the one; Dev Mamledar is
also a disciple of Swami. How can you deny the fact that you have no connection
to Swami?” From there, I thanked the guru and returned home. On my way,
back, I started thinking that unknowingly and merely by a short introduction
and some connection, Shree Akkalkot Swami had been showering His blessings
on to me. For the last 70 years of my life, He had been guiding me, removing all
obstacles in my life and I didn’t even know about it. This could have only been
possible because of the blessings of Shree Akkalkot Swami!”

2. Mere visit showers unlimited blessings

In a small town in Gujarat, India, arrived a new principal of a high school, Mr.
Ravishankar Joshi. Mr. Joshi had the pleasure of meeting judge, Ishwarlal
Ghelabhai Mehta, who practiced law in that town and was an ardent devotee of
Shree Swami Samarth. One day, the Principal had a chance to visit the Judge’s
house. There he saw the idol of Shree Swami Samarth. Mr. Joshi placed a small
donation at the feet of the idol. What he felt was Shree Swami Samarth smiling
at him. Little did he know, what was in store for him?

After a few years passed, the principal left that town and came to Mumbai. He
stayed there for a month and then returned to Botad, Gujarat.

One day, Mr. Joshi started getting severe pain in his stomach. There were no
signs or symptoms before the onset of the pain. It just happened. In a short span
of time, his condition worsened and he developed a high fever. He tried to walk
but collapsed immediately. This severe stomach pain scared his wife and she
called the doctor. The doctor arrived and found Mr. Joshi having a fever of 108

degrees Fahrenheit. The physician mentioned that the situation was worsening
and that he wasn’t sure if the patient could survive the night. This further
worried his wife.

Mr. Joshi lying on the bed felt like his life was coming to an end. Maybe this is
how it was meant to end. Not sure what was going on, he stayed there, lying on
the bed, but he could not sleep and stayed awake. Around midnight, he started
smelling the fragrance of flowers and felt like the entire surroundings in his
room had changed. He felt someone slowly opening his mind; the feeling was
slow, like the blooming of a flower bud. He then saw Shree Swami Samarth
himself and heard him say, “I have come because of Ishwarlal Ghelabhai Mehta!
Now I shall come on June 8th at 8am” and in a flash, He disappeared.

The next day everyone was surprised as to how Mr. Joshi survived the night.
When the doctor visited, to everyone’s delight, he said, “Crisis has gone”. The
Principal did not mention to anyone about his meeting with Shree Swami
Samarth the previous night.

Mr. Joshi was eagerly waiting for June 8th. On that date, at 8am, he felt the
same changes in his surroundings and the fragrance of fresh flowers around him
making him realize that Shree Swami Samarth was there in the room. Shree
Swami Samarth spoke about a lot of philosophical concepts and began imparting
immense knowledge. Mr. Joshi tried to capture as much as he could be
struggling to cope up with the speed with which Shree Swami Samarth was
talking. Due to his poor health, Mr. Joshi was not able to focus for too long and
hence drank some juice to quench his thirst. This distraction was enough and
Shree Swami Samarth disappeared. It could also have been a reason for Shree
Swami Samarth to complete his discourse and leave; we will never know.

This story demonstrates the unlimited showers of blessings by none other than
Shree Swami Samarth and his willingness to help those in needs!

3. Spiritual touch invigorates married life

Change is a constant in peoples’ lives. It touches lives and transforms individuals

completely. Change in a person’s life comes in the form of circumstances,
incidents or interactions with other individuals.

The story that follows describes how circumstances and spiritual interaction
completely transformed a woman’s life.

There was a young lady who was married to a very famous person in India who
was a widower. He wasn’t interested in remarriage but because family pressures,
he agreed to marry her. Things were fine at the beginning but few years into
marriage, they realized the relationship was not working. His inclination was
more towards spirituality but his wife was aloof. This led to dissatisfaction in the
lady and she started to lose interest in life. Then one day when she felt she
couldn`t take it anymore, she decided to commit suicide.

The next morning, she left the house and walked towards the sea shore. On her
way, she noticed a temple. She decided to visit the temple and get the strength to
finally end her life.

She entered the temple, but there was no one inside. This temple was not of
Shree Ram, Shree Krishna or any other Goddess, but it was of Shree Akkalkot
Swami Samarth. Inside the temple while taking darshan6, she heard someone
say “Ashtavakragita7” a couple of times. She looked around, and could not see
anyone. After taking the darshan, she stepped out of the temple and was about to

6 Darshan: Seeing a deity, God, or Saint. A simple glimpse, glance is said to have serene effects or transformations
within the individual’s body or mind
7 Ashtavakragita: Asta means eight, and vakra means bends or cuts. The story relates to Shree Swami Samarth

cutting the 4 lumps of plague, making it eight, hence the term used by Shankar Maharaj. Astavakragita is a divine
scripture that is a dialogue on nature of soul, reality and bondage. For more info:

continue towards the sea shore, but she suddenly met an individual, who was a
good friend of her husband. He asked what she was doing and obviously, she
couldn’t say that she was on her way to commit suicide. To dodge the question,
she responded that she was just wandering around and was about to return
home. The individual offered to walk her home. With a heavy heart, she retraced
her steps towards her husband`s house. Her husband was worriedly pacing the
house as he didn`t know where she was. On seeing her, he was glad and said that
Shankar Maharaj had come, and that they should go out to take His darshan.
Though not interested, she obliged to accompany her husband as she was guilt
ridden with the fact that she left home this morning without informing him.

On meeting Shankar Maharaj, He looked at the lady and just by looking at her;
the lady felt a surge of spirituality in herself. She felt the same way someone like
Mirabai 8 or Janabai 9 would feel because of the endowment of spiritual power.
Thereafter, with this spiritual encounter, the lives of this couple changed
completely. They found new happiness in their lives and felt a constant spiritual
inspiration. The couple left Mumbai and came back to their original house,
which later become the center of a happy married life.

Such is a power of the Sadguru10, who is always working for the well-being of his
devotees and their spiritual enlightenment. It turned this couple away from
destroying their marriage and led them towards a very happy and satisfied
married life.

Mirabai: Woman poet and saint, ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. She has a number or poems in praise Lord

4. Livelihood Obtained!
An astrologer by profession, Narmadanand earned little that it was hard to make
ends meet. He lived in the big city, Mumbai where the cost of living was higher
than average. He was renting a small apartment there.

Every night he would sense some negative energy in the house. When he slept,
he would feel as if someone was sitting on his chest and trying to strangle him.
This would lead him to wake up sweating profusely. He didn’t know what it was
and didn’t know how to explain it in words.

Narmadanand had a regular visitor who wished to know his future based on
astrological principles and sought Narmadanand’ s predictions. One day,
Narmadanand told the visitor his future and in return for his prediction asked
for money. The visitor replied that there was another astrologer who told him
the exact same thing with no monetary gains attached. Narmadanand got
curious and decided to meet this astrologer who was working for free.

The visitor told him to visit the Shree Swami Samarth temple in Dadar. This was
the first time Narmadanand came to know about the Shree Swami Samarth
Math 11. Visiting for the very first time, Narmadanand felt the spiritual energy of
the temple. He felt a connection to Shree Swami Samarth and was attracted by
the spirituality of the Math. He closed his eyes and was lost in prayer. After that
he became a regular visitor at Swami’s temple and started reciting Swami’s
name.

As Narmadanand’ s financial situation was not too good and the astrological
services was not paying well enough, he decided to apply for an administration
staff position at a government institute. The requirements for applying for the

11Math: In simple terms, it is a temple. In spiritual terms, as shared by Shree Anna Limaye in his book Sadguruchi
Charanseva (meaning, serving at the feet of Sadguru), Math is a place where devotees come together for spiritual
upliftment. Here the devotees experience Sadguru’ s blissfulness, spirit and love. Here all the devotees are
together to experience the power of Sadguru and immerse themselves in His illumination

16
||Shree Swami Samarth||

job were that applicants required minimum 50% in grade 10. Narmadanand only
had a 35%. Despite that, he applied for the job and got a call for the interview.

The interview went well till the time when they asked him his score in grade 10.
Narmadanand, openly bluffed and said, “75%!” The interviewer was glad and
asked for the certificates. That’s when Narmadanand realized that he was about
to get exposed. Even though he had the file with all his certificates,
Narmadanand made an excuse of not having the certificates and said he would
go home and return with them. Narmadanand left the office and came home
thinking about what he could do. He really needed the job to overcome his
financial difficulties. He prayed to Shree Swami Samarth for help and somehow,
he thought he heard someone say that he should just go back and present the file
with certificates to the interviewer. With this inspiration, he went back and
showed the list of certificates. The interviewer flipped rapidly through the file
and said that it was all good. A few days later to his surprise, Narmadanand got
the job offer. He was extremely happy and thanked Shree Swami Samarth for
saving him and for having faith in him. Narmadanand became a staunch devotee
of Shree Swami Samantha and a few years later met his guru Shree
Rangaavadhut Maharaj 12 and narrated all that had happened, to which his guru
replied, “Shree Swami Samarth is MahaSamarth13!”

5. Transformation under the shelter of Shree Swami

Samarth

Per Indian scriptures, there exists a stone called the Philosopher’s Stone. It is
said to have special property which is that when it is touched to piece of iron, the
iron gets converted to gold. Some scriptures say that the Sadguru is like this

12 Shree Rangaavadhut Maharaj: Saint from Baroda and disciple of Shree Vasudevanand Saraswati (Tembe Swami)
under the lineage of Shree Guru Dattatreya
13 MahaSamarth: Shree Akkalkot Swami is also known as Shree Swami Samarth. One who can do anything. Maha

means someone who is above the word that follows. So MahaSamarth means above can do anything.

17
||Shree Swami Samarth||

stone, which can turn any human being into “gold,” a knowledgeable,
enlightened person. Some even say that this falls short of giving a true
representation of the Sadguru. A Sadguru is someone who will transform an
ordinary human being to himself; someone of intellectual and spiritual prowess
and the ability to grant powers and divinity to others. i.e. arising a human soul
from where it originally was to where the soul of the Sadguru is.

Below there is an excerpt from Swami Mahatmya by ardent devotee of Shree

Swami Samarth to better illustrate the meaning of the Sadguru.

Shree Anand Bharati Maharaj was a mere fisherman before being enlightened to
a heightened spiritual state. During his life as a fisherman, he used to sail into
the sea and fish regularly. Beside fishing to earn a living, he was a faithful
devotee of Shree Swami Samarth. Once while on the sea, there was a huge storm
and his ship got caught in the bad weather; the storm was so severe that
escaping from it was almost impossible. Remembering Shree Swami Samarth, he
called for help and said to Him that if he was to survive this storm, he would
spend all his life at the service of Shree Swami Samarth. Now in Akkalkot, Swami
was sitting with some devotees when suddenly, Shree Swami Samarth raised his
hands as if he was catching something. The devotees sitting around saw water
dripping down Swami’s hands, which they assumed to be tirth14. The devotees
took some and drank it and to their surprise, the water was salty and the
devotees could not understand why. A few days later, the fisherman came to
Akkalkot to serve Shree Swami Samarth, wherein the whole picture was clear.
When Swami suddenly lifted his hands as to grasp something, he was holding
Shree Anand Bharati Maharaj’s boat; he was essentially existing in two places at
the same time. The fisherman then served Shree Swami Samarth and became a
spiritual leader to be known as Shree Anand Bharati Maharaj. Shree Anand

Bharati Maharaj, later had disciples who wrote Guruleelamrut15, as narrated by

none other than the faithful fisherman, who transformed under Swami Samarth.

The above excerpt demonstrates the power of the Sadguru; someone who will
always shower his blessings and love to those who seek it.

6. Jailer becomes Devotee

A jail warden in India was responsible for several prisoners inhabiting the jail
(prison). Every morning, he would escort the prisoners to the courtyard and
from there they were sent to different areas around the prison do work and
return to their cell in the evening. In the evening, the warden would do a
headcount of all the prisoners to ensure that no one had escaped.

One day, while doing the headcount, the warden found that one of the prisoners
was missing. This incident saddened him as he had dedicated his whole life
managing the prison and its inmates. He was close to his retirement but such an
incident had never occurred until now. He was dejected for this incident would
be a black mark on his spotless reputation as a warden. He prayed to Shree
Swami Samarth for help and said that if he came out of this predicament, he
would serve Shree Swami Samarth for the rest of his life.

The prisoner, who had managed to escape was running away from the jail at a
high speed so that he could cover as much ground as possible. However, he soon
noticed a slight problem: when the prisoner tried to run in one direction, he saw
a sanyasi standing in front of him. Immediately, the prisoner retraced his steps
and started to run in the other direction. The sanyasi again appeared out of
nowhere and stood right in front of the prisoner, thus preventing him from

continuing that path. The prisoner retraced his steps and changed directions.
The sanyasi would appear again. This continued for the entire night and by
morning the prisoner was very tired. Meanwhile a search party sent out by the
warden found the tired prisoner and brought him back to the jail. The warden
was overjoyed. After hearing the whole story, he realized that Shree Swami
Samarth had helped him and hence he immediately resigned from his duty and
left for Akkalkot, as per his vow to Shree Swami Samarth.

At Akkalkot, he fell at the feet of Shree Swami Samarth who gave his leather
padukas to the warden. The warden returned home with the padukas. His wife
was appalled at the sight of a Hindu saint padukas as they were Muslim. So, she
immediately packed up her things and left with their son as she did not want to
live a place of where the padukas of a Hindu saint were revered.

The warden was not concerned about his family as he spent all his time
worshiping the padukas. He gave the dirt underneath the padukas as prasad16;
the dirt cured diseases, gave people jobs and money, and allowed people to have
a prosperous marriage. The faithful people who visited the former warden
started frequenting his home more often and he became known as an avaliya17.
Through his bhakti for Shree Swami Samarth, the warden prospered and became
well-known. Seeing her husband’s prosperity, his wife came back along with
their son to live together as a family.

7. Atheist turns pious, culmination into Spiritual Guru

Shree Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar spent his childhood days in Surat, a city in
the state of Gujarat. At the age of six, he heard the story of an old woman who
had been to Akkalkot and returned to Surat

After hearing the experience, Shree Balkrishna started to chant the name of
Shree Swami Samarth with great devotion. Every morning, he would climb to
the rooftop and sit down and begin chanting Swami Samarth’s name until the
heat of the sun was too much to bear.

When he entered youthhood, he came to Mumbai to further his education. In

Mumbai, he was influenced by western literature and atheist ideas, which turned
him into an atheist. The person he was staying with became worried that the
atheist ideas would pollute his mind. So, he requested his neighbor to help him
resolve this dilemma with Shree Balkrishna.

His neighbor was none other than the revered Taat Maharaj, who himself was a
disciple of Shree Swami Samarth. Shree Taat Maharai became furious upon
hearing about the boy and said, “I don’t even want to see his face. Ask him,
doesn’t he remember the hours that he spent reciting Shree Swami Samarth’s
name in the hot sun?” Taat Maharaj further said to the neighbor, “Even though
he has forgotten his recitation of Shree Swami Samarth’s name, his destiny has
been decided for him and his name has already been carved as someone to be
one of Swami Samarth’s key disciples.”

The guardian of young Balkrishna conveyed Taat Maharaj’s words to him. After
hearing this, Balkrishna was surprised because he didn’t understand how Taat
Maharaj knew about something (his recitation of Swami Samarth’s name) which
he did in secrecy. Balkrishna repented the deeds that he did as a youth and wrote
a letter to Taat Maharaj and requested him to be his Sadguru.

Taat Maharaj had a daily routine to visit the temple of Goddess Bhuleshwari in
Mumbai, which was close to his residence. One day, knowing the daily routine,

21
||Shree Swami Samarth||

young Balkrishna walked behind Taat Maharaj to this temple. At the temple,
Balkrishna came face to face to with Taat Maharaj, who looked very angry.
Balkrishna then turned towards the goddess and even felt that the serene idol
had turned extremely ferocious! Petrified, Balkrishna immediately prostrated at
Taat Maharaj feet for forgiveness. This action resulted in a calming effect and
Taat Maharaj wasn’t mad any more, rather he was radiating love and he asked
Balkrishna to look at the Goddess. As he turned his head to look upon Her
divinity, Balkrishna realized that the Goddess was calm and serene and she was
showering Balkrishna with her blessings. Shocked by the change, Balkrishna fell
at the feet of Taat Maharaj again. Thereafter, Taat Maharaj took Balkrishna, who
became a devotee of Shree Swami Samarth, under his wing.

Shree Balkrishna returned to Surat and continued his devotion towards Shree
Swami Samarth. He spent his entire time continuously immersed in devotional
chanting, performing Puja and being in a meditative state. This eventually
resulted in a financial crisis for Balkrishna, and he was not able to perform
proper puja towards Shree Swami Samarth.

Following the principles of a married person, he did not ask for help from
anyone, not even his disciples. There were times, when he had to go without food
at a stretch for 3 days due to lack of money. Financial inadequacies resulted in
failure to perform puja regularly of Shree Swami Samarth leading to
disappointment. One day as Balkrishna walked dejectedly, he heard a tall person
with long arms calling out to him. The tall person said, “Balkrishna, don’t be
sad” and handed a rupee coin. He said that this coin would take care of all his
financial woes and allow him to perform puja towards Shree Swami Samarth.
Surprisingly, from that day onwards Balkrishna found that there was always
sufficient money to perform a daily puja for Swami Samarth! Shree Balkrishna
was overjoyed and continued his spiritual journey on the path of devotion to
Shree Swami Samarth.

Any spiritual journey has three main obstacles: wine, wealth, and women. Wine
wasn’t an issue for him because he never got into drinking. With regards to

22
||Shree Swami Samarth||

women, his wife was the only woman that he had had any relationship with and
after their first child he completely detached himself from that relationship. This
left only one hurdle to cross, wealth.

As he spent all his time in devotion to Swami Samarth he did not amass a great
deal of wealth but he still couldn’t connect with Shree Swami Samarth
completely. He realized it was money that was still causing a hurdle in his path.
He started to ponder about the cause and wondered if his wife had any wealth
tucked away for safe keeping. Upon further investigation, he found out that his
wife had indeed saved some money and jewelry in case of an emergency. One
day, he devised a plan. He sent his wife and her brother for a short errand. As he
wanted them to do it right away, his wife left the house in a hurry leaving the
safe deposit box keys behind.

Balkrishna Maharaj immediately opened the safe deposit box and put all the
money and jewelry in a bag and ran towards the Tapi river where he threw the
bag into the water. In despair, he said to himself, “If I cannot get the darshan of
Shree Swami Samarth, then am I even worth anything?” And in that fury, he
flung himself into the river. Surprising part was that he did not have the slightest
worry even though he did not know how to swim. He drifted with the flow of the
river far away from Surat, when suddenly; his Sadguru Shree Taat Maharaj
appeared in physical form and pulled him out of the river. He helped Shree
Balkrishna to calm down and told him that he was appointed as one of the great
disciples of Shree Swami Samarth. Taat Maharaj said, “Shree Swami Samarth,
physically, will give you darshan when you request and he will also happily
accept puja from you!”

Back in Surat, when Kamala Mata, Balakrishna Maharaj’s wife returned home
she found the house was empty and the safety deposit box was open and empty.
She searched the house but there was no sign of her husband either! Terrified,
she frantically started searching for Balkrishna everywhere and finally came to
Mumbai with her brother to look for her husband. She was worried that she
wouldn’t be able find her husband in the big city and Kamala Mata decided to go

23
||Shree Swami Samarth||

on a fast. For 5 days, she prayed to Shree Swami Samarth without having a
single drop of water. On the fifth day, a tall person with long arms and a beard
came to her and handed her a small box of padukas and told her not to worry.
The individual assured her that her husband would return soon. 3 days later,
Balkrishna Maharaj returned to Mumbai!

8. Result in six months

||Have faith in Shree Swami Samarth and you will triumph in your work||

The following is an incident as narrated by Mr. G. V. Joglekar:

Narration starts from Mumbai, circa 1982; where I earned my livelihood through
a small shop. Taatyasaheb, a renowned high court judge used to frequent my
shop and I would have interesting conversations with him.

One day while we were having a conversation, Mr. Daaji Bhaatavedekar arrived.
Daaji was a well-known theatre actor who played leading roles in many Marathi
plays. Daaji and Taatyasaheb started having a discussion on the community hall
which they had acquired recently. The intent of the hall was to be a place for
social gatherings, cultural activities and community building events. It was to be
a place where like-minded people could gather and work towards the well-being
of their community. The intentions were good but the hall came with a hefty
price. During their conversation, Daaji brought up the issue of the hefty
mortgage to be repaid for the community hall. The team wanted to relieve
themselves from this burden as soon as possible. Taatyasaheb listened intently
and then requested me to pray to Shree Swami Samarth.

Daaji and I went to the Shree Swami Samarth Math in Kandevaadi, Mumbai. At
the Math, we prayed for relief from this financial burden. After this serene visit
to the Math, we decided to buy a photo frame of Shree Swami Samarth and

24
||Shree Swami Samarth||

instate it at the community hall for His blessings. We performed a small puja
with flowers at the community hall and inaugurated the picture of Shree Swami
Samarth. As the picture was being instated, someone from the crowd
commented sarcastically, “What’s the use of having Swami’s photo?” Without a
second thought or hesitation, I replied immediately, “Shree Swami Samarth will
give you results in six months.” My spontaneous and confident reply left no
room for further arguments.

A few months passed and Daaji got the chance to meet the Chief Minister of
Maharashtra, Abdul Rahaman Antulay. He invited the Chief Minister to visit the
hall and requested him for a grant. When the Chief Minister arrived, he
witnessed a famous play being enacted at the community hall. The play and the
overall ambience of the hall impressed the Minister so much that he declared a
donation of rupees 500,000 to the hall and immediately issued the check! This
event took place about six months from the inauguration of the photo frame and
thus the community hall was relieved from its mortgage, just like I knew it
would.

9. Dealing with Challenging Situation

We all face challenging situations in life. Often, these challenges come without
any forewarning. As these situations arise, sometimes they subside on their own
and other times they require considerable effort to overcome. We as individuals
face these situations, but are oblivious as to why they arise and how they
subside. Is there a way to predict when and how these challenges will manifest?
What should one do in such situations? How can we overcome these challenging
situations? All these questions are quite important and but the answers elude us.
So, in such situations all we need is to be alert and have staunch faith in our
Sadguru; for he will help and guide us through our life’s challenges.

25
||Shree Swami Samarth||

This is a story of a family that lived in Uganda, in the city of Kilambe. The
husband worked as a surveyor in copper mines in the city. Life was as usual with
work and family. One day, he suddenly developed a high fever which rose to 103
– 104-degree Fahrenheit. He was immediately admitted into the hospital at the
copper mines. The doctor checked him and gave him few injections to bring is
fever down. The medication reduced the temperature of his body quite quickly
and he felt better. Everyone was glad, but their happiness didn’t last long. He
started getting boils all over his body including his nose, face, mouth and even
both his eyes. The doctor’s medicine had reduced his overall body temperature
but the heat within his body manifested itself physically; which led to the boils
all over his body.

Due to this chronic condition, he got a big boil over his right eye making it
impossible for him. Since he was a surveyor, his right eye was of prime
importance for him since it’s used while surveying. This resulted in him being
unfit to do his job and he was relieved from service. This came as a shock to him
and he could not do anything about it. Now; he was here; partially blind and
with no source of income.

His wife was a devotee of Shree Swami Samarth and firmly believed that Shree
Swami Samarth would cure her husband’s eye. He visited numerous doctors in
Uganda, Kenya and South Africa, but all the doctors said that there was no hope
for the eye to return to normalcy. Only one doctor gave them a ray of hope
saying, “if the eye was to be cured, it would cure naturally and neither medicine
nor surgery would help.”

The individual was disheartened but continued his effort to find a solution. One
day accompanied by his friend he embarked on a journey to visit another doctor
in Kampala which was roughly 500 kilometers away. His friend was driving and
he was lying on the back seat as he could not see with one eye for a long time.
That day Mother Nature was in full fury as it was raining heavily and pitch dark
such that it became difficult to drive. The only thing the driver could see was the

26
||Shree Swami Samarth||

lights of other vehicles on the road. Suddenly, their car had a head-on collision
with another car. The impact was so huge that the car was totally smashed.

Emergency services came on scene and both individuals were pulled out of the
car and immediately taken to the hospital. The driver had multiple fractures but
the individual had just cut his lip. When his wife came to know of the accident,
she was shocked, but had faith in Shree Swami Samarth. She came to the
hospital to be with her husband. At the hospital, the doctor came to examine and
found the individual with a patch on his right eye. The individual narrated the
background for the patch. So, the doctor decided to do an in-depth checkup of
the eye the next morning.

The very next morning, the doctor came and removed the cap on the eye to
examine it. What the doctor noticed was; there was no boil and the eye was
normal! The individual could not believe this. He slowly opened his right eye and
could see everything.

Everyone was extremely glad and stunned as his eye was back to normal without
any medication or any medical assistance whatsoever. The individual’s faith in
Shree Swami Samarth strengthened. The friend who was driving with him to
Kampala also recovered completely from the fractures.

The incident above brings home the thought that life challenges us in many
ways. It is how perseverance and unwavering faith in the Sadguru helps us
overcome these challenges and strengthens our belief in the blessings and care of
Shree Swami Samarth.

10. Saved from critical situation

The following story was narrated by an ardent devotee of Shree Swami Samarth:

In 1945, we wanted to start a small furniture manufacturing business. We

started our business during the “Festival of Lights – Diwali” by seeking the

27
||Shree Swami Samarth||

blessings of Shree Swami Samarth. Over the next three years, we consistently
received orders from the Arsenal factory in Pune and our business progressed
steadily. Due to our brand equity that had built up over the years, the manager of
the Arsenal factory in Pune recommended us to the Director General of Supplies
and Disposals in Delhi. We completed the required formalities, paperwork,
including obtaining a solvency certificate of Rupees 500,000 from the bank.
Thanks to the bank manager; our company was eventually registered as a
supplier with the central government of India, a big achievement for us indeed.

We started receiving orders for supplying packing cases to the ammunition

factory. Due to the order size and delivery timing, we brokered a deal with
another manufacturer in Mumbai to supply these packing cases. He would
manufacture the cases and deliver them and we charged him a small commission
of one rupee per case. This style of doing business was proving to be profitable
for us and we continued to make large profits.

One day we got a huge order of supplying 80,000 cases! On one hand, we were
glad to receive the order, but on the other we were questioning ourselves on how
we would deliver this. We approached the other manufacturer only to find that
his firm had closed and filed for bankruptcy; this shocked all of us! We tried
working with other manufacturers, but no one was ready to provide us with
goods at the same cost that was required by the central government. Eventually,
we caught hold of one manufacturer who was ready. He delivered the first order,
but half of the cases got rejected; now, this became my source of worry. Our
delivery was getting delayed and half of the packing cases in the first shipment
were rejected. To top it all, we received a letter that we all hoped we would never
receive: the letter from the Director General; which stated that our contract
would be cancelled and that damages would be recovered from the bank who
had issued the solvency certificate for our business.

We were perplexed and could not think of a solution to this immense dilemma.
We replied asking them to wait before cancelling the order and requested the
Director General time so that we could meet him in person. In such a critical

28
||Shree Swami Samarth||

situation, we remembered Shree Swami Samarth. For three continuous days in

front of his picture; without any food and water; I read his holy book, the
Guruleelamrut. On the fourth day, Shree Balakrishna Maharaj Suratkar came
into my dream and said, “Don’t worry; I have requested Swami to help you. Go
to Mumbai and convey the true story to the Director General.”

We reached Mumbai to meet the Director General. We were called immediately

inside his office, even though there were 8-9 suppliers in the queue waiting to
meet him. In his office, we saluted him and started recalling the story as it
happened. We requested that the order shouldn’t be cancelled and that the
central government shouldn’t receive money from the bank for damages. By the
time, we were done with our story, our eyes were noticeably watered. We paused,
there was silence in the room; those few seconds felt like hours to us. We were
completely unsure in what way this whole scenario would unfold. We didn’t
know what God willed for us.

I slowly got my attention to the room and looked at the Director General. I could
see his lips move but none of the words that he was saying was making sense. I
gathered myself and then realized what he was saying. He said, “I will not cancel
your order and I won’t recover the charges from the bank. I will issue the notice
right now and you can take it with you.” This was a boon for us, a true blessing.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I continued to listen to what the Director General
had to say, “Last night a tall sanyasi with long arms came into my dream. He
asked me to help you and in return I will get a promotion within a year. I can
clearly remember the graceful person in the dream. I feel like obeying the words
of this great person which would only mean that I have done my duty.”

11. Surviving Cancer for 12 years

A devotee of Shree Swami Samarth from Pune came to Tata Memorial Hospital,
Mumbai with his mother. She had been diagnosed with cancer and they were
there for a checkup. The doctor conducted the routine procedure and informed
the man that his mother was anemic. There wasn’t much blood in her body, so

29
||Shree Swami Samarth||

they couldn’t take the risk of operating on her. And since she had the dreaded
disease for a while now, the doctor informed the devotee that his mother chances
of survival are low; could be few months or weeks! This news shattered the man
completely. He had lost his father at a young age and he didn’t want to lose his
mother.

In this upset emotional state, he and his mom visited Shree Swami Samarth’s
Math in Dadar, Mumbai. There he was told to pray to the guru, Shree Balkrishna
Maharaj Suratkar, from the lineage of Shree Swami Samarth. The man felt a bit
relieved after hearing this at the Math, and returned to Pune with his mother. At
their residence in Pune, he prayed every night to Shree Balakrishna Maharaj.
One night, he heard Shree Balakrishna Maharaj advising him politely, “Don’t
worry. I have requested Shree Swami Samarth to help you. Read the holy book
Shree Guruleelamrut 51 times and your mother will live for 12 more years, but
ensure that she takes the medications that the doctor has prescribed.”

From then on, the individual, while managing his job, would read the Shree
Guruleelamrut every day. He managed to read the 55-chapter holy book four
times in a year. His mother continued to live month by month and year by year.
By the end of 12th year, he had read it 51 times in total. To everyone’s surprise
his mother lived for those 12 years even though she was diagnosed with slim
chances of survival; few months or few weeks.

12. Narrow escape

Shree Baba Maharaj Sahastrabuddhe is from the lineage of Shree Swami
Samarth. The following is a story of one of his disciples.

This individual had a family in Mumbai and was living happily with his wife and
daughter. One day, the daughter was walking with her friend near Dadar, a
suburb in Mumbai. An unknown man befriended them and talked to both girls

30
||Shree Swami Samarth||

as if he knew them. After a short while he kidnapped them and took them to
Chowpatty18, a seashore near Dadar.

At home, the individual became anxious, as his daughter had not returned home.
He prayed to Shree Swami Samarth and started looking for her. In his search, he
reached Chowpatty and found his daughter and her friend walking unknowingly.
Pleased to see his daughter, the person thanked Shree Swami Samarth and
returned home happily.

A couple months later, when he and his family went to Pune to meet Shree Baba
Maharaj, Shree Baba asked him, “What calamity came, that one day I had to go
to Chowpatty?” The person narrated the whole story to him. Shree Baba Maharaj
silently listened and then replied, “Swami takes care of everyone!”

13. Lost and found

Shree Anna Limaye19 is a revered saint who lived in Dombivli, Mumbai,
Maharashtra. He built a big Math for Swami devotees, where every year a
festival (Utsav) for Shree Swami Samarth takes place which spans a period of
two days. The festival marks the celebration of the birth anniversary of Shree
Swami Samarth.

In 1987, a couple of families living in Baroda decided to visit the Shree Swami
Samarth festival in Dombivli, Maharashtra.

They came together as a group from Baroda to take part in the festivities.
Everyone had a great time at the festival and the two days just flew. It was time
to leave for Baroda and hence they went to bid goodbye to Shree Anna Limaye.

Shree Limaye seemed quite disturbed and he asked them to be careful as he was
sensing something. The group left for the train station. At Dadar station they had
to cross the bridge to get to the platform. On the platform when they all gathered

together; they found one of the children missing. They looked in all directions
but couldn’t find the child. As they were losing hope, they saw the child finding
his way back to the group. They were overjoyed.

In this stressful situation, they did not realize the train was coming onto the
platform. They frantically grabbed their belongings and took the children and
boarded the train.

The train chugged its way to the Mumbai Central Station where the group got off
the train. This was from where they would take the train to Baroda. As they were
waiting; they realized that another child of theirs was left behind at Dadar
station. At this point the group was devastated and didn’t know what to do. The
group turned to Shree Swami Samarth for help. They started praying for the safe
return of the child.

Suddenly, a stranger came over with the child looking for his parents. The group
was shocked as well as pleased beyond compare. They thanked the stranger. But
they all knew that Shree Swami Samarth had heard their prayers and helped
them. They were all thankful and grateful to Shree Swami Samarth!

14. Broken motorbike starts without repair

Every year an Utsav is held as a celebration of the birth anniversary of Shree
Swami Samarth in Dandia Bazaar, Baroda. This is held as per the Marathi
Calendar on Vasant Panchami, the 5th Day of Maagh20, which comes around the
end of January and early February. Mr. Pawar, a local resident had been
attending this festival along with his family regularly. The following is a
narration of his experience during the festival in 1992.

The two-day festival of Shree Swami Samarth ends with taking the padukas back
in a procession to the Math. Usually by the time the whole festival is over, it is
close to midnight. After that all the devotees leave for their home. Mr. Pawar,

20

his wife and his daughter also went to the place where they had parked their
motorcycle so that they could go home.

Mr. Pawar tried to kick start the motorbike but for some reason the motorbike
did not start. So, the three of them decided to walk the motorbike for a bit and
then attempt to restart it. Mr. Pawar walked the bike for a small distance, and
then tried restarting it a couple times, but it would not do so. It seemed like
something was wrong with the bike and so they started looking for alternatives.
Being around midnight it was not safe to leave the bike on the road and go home.
Moreover, at this late hour, the roads were deserted and there was no help in
sight. Without a clue on how to get out of this situation, the three stood
apprehensively.

After waiting on the side of the road for a while they saw another motor bike
coming their way. They were not sure if this would turn to be good or bad. The
motorbike stopped and a tall person with a long overcoat stepped off to inquire
what had happened. Mr. Pawar explained that their bike was not starting. The
stranger the requested if he could take a look. As this may be the only chance,
Mr. Pawar obliged. The stranger got on the bike and gave it a hard kick and to
everyone’s surprise; the motor started humming and the bike was roaring to go.
The stranger rode the bike a bit and then came back to Mr. Pawar and said,
“There is nothing wrong with your bike, you can reach home easily.” Mr. Pawar
was relieved. The trio then hopped on the bike and started for home. As he
pulled the bike a little further down the road, Mr. Pawar turned back to get
another glimpse of the stranger, only to realize that he was looking at a deserted
road. The stranger had disappeared in the darkness. Mr. Pawar asked his wife,
whose festival we attended today, his wife replied, “Shree Swami Samarth!”

15. Transformation of thief’s heart, adopted as a son

Dombivli started as a small town, near Mumbai. Over the years, people started
making it their home as it was close to the city and had a country side feel to it.

33
||Shree Swami Samarth||

Slowly the population of this town sky rocketed turning it into a concrete jungle
with buildings sprawled across its skyline.

One fine morning, when the sun hadn’t risen yet and the air was slightly chilly; a
middle-aged woman was taking a walk to escape from the concrete jungle and
take a breath of fresh air; something that had become so rare. In a saree, with
the edge wrapped around her head as a scarf, she walked with the name of Shree
Swami Samarth in her mind.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a tall dark stranger with a sharp knife in his hand
jumped in front of her and asked her sternly, “Hey woman, hand over your gold
bangles and necklace immediately!” Upon seeing the knife wielding, arrogant
stranger; the mother of two was shocked. A shiver ran down her spine. After a
few moments, she took a grip of herself and thought rationally. She replied, “I
can hand over the gold to you, but on one condition.” The thief pointed the sharp
knife towards her and replied in an egotistical fashion, “I am not here to listen to
conditions; hand over the gold, otherwise… Do you see this knife, I will not
hesitate to use this and slit you right through!” The woman was firm and said,
“You listen to my condition and I will hand over everything to you.” The thief
was losing patience and in the interest of time, asked, “What is your condition?”

The woman replied, “I have received these gold bangles and this necklace by the
blessings of Shree Swami Samarth. I will remove the gold that I am wearing,
keep them at His feet and then hand them over to you. As I have received all of
this by His grace, I need to ask him before I can give it to you.

If you agree to my condition, I will not even ask for your name. I assure you that
I will neither shout nor tell anyone. If you find at any time, I am going against
my word, feel free to use your knife and kill me immediately. I live at 10 minutes
from here, so we will take the auto rickshaw to get there quickly. I will have the
rickshaw wait at my doorstep, so that once you get the gold, you can leave
quickly. Please adhere to my condition; you are like a son to me. I am a mother
to a son and now I have you as well. Let’s leave, my house is nearby. Now when I

34

think of it, I feel it’s good that all of this is happening. What is the use of clinging
onto material possessions such as gold at this age?” The woman continued with
motherly love, “My dear son, when I leave this earth, please come to my funeral,
as my god child. Come let’s hurry now!”

After hearing all of this, the thief was filled with remorse. He could not move. As
his grip on the knife loosened, he fell at the woman’s feet and wept, “Mother I
am sorry, you have transformed me completely. I feel my inner being instilled
with new values.” With tears in her eyes; she held her god child and helped him
to stand up. The mother within her blessed the stranger and said, “Go on your
path of righteousness. When I meet you next time, I will check to see whether
the new values continue to be a part of you.” The stranger nodded and escaped
in the darkness.

This whole episode happened in a span of five minutes. The woman in this story
is none other than me. In those five minutes, where did I get this strength to act
firmly? Did I get it from within me? Hell no! There is only one power that can
take me through these calamities, Shree Swami Samarth!

16. Plate full of blessings

Shree Khanvelkar is a well-known name in the world of children’s literature. He
is a well-read author and has a strong research background in literature. He
spent a lot of time reading and analyzing books written on Shree Swami
Samarth. After his research and analysis, he wrote a biographical novel on Shree
Akkalkot Swami. The following is an excerpt from the preface of his book
detailing what inspired him to do so.

Shree Akkalkot Swami went into Mahasamadhi21 on 30th April 1878 at 5:30pm.
(As per Shree Anna Limaye the time was 4pm). Several years have passed since

then, but people continue to experience his physical manifestation time and
again. Swami continues to guide his disciples and their disciples as they embark
on their spiritual journey. He is the beacon that guides yogis as well as common
people.

As promised, he manifested in physical form near a village close to Akkalkot just

five days after his mahasamadhi. He had made a commitment to the
Jahargirdar22of the village that he would visit him and hence went to the
Jahargirdar’s residence. Likewise, Shree Swami Samarth manifested himself in
physical form in front of Shree Balappa, one of his staunch devotees. Shree
Balappa was extremely heartbroken after Swami’s mahasamadhi. He sat in front
of the Samadhi for three days without any food or water. After three days, Shree
Swami Samarth manifested in physical form and showed Shree Balappa the true
nature of his eternal existence.

Another example: On Swami’s instructions, Beedkar Maharaj embarked on the

journey of Narmada pradaskhina23. During the journey, he read the news at
Maheshwar. On reading he felt like his whole body and mind had sunk into a
blackhole. Beedkar Maharaj was extremely sad and shattered after hearing about
Swami’s mahasamadhi. That same night, Shree Swami Samarth manifested
himself and said, “I have not gone, I am Eternal!” Similarly, many individuals,

23Pradaskhina: A pilgrimage undertaken by walking on foot, sometimes wearing a footwear or sometimes without.
Shree Beedkar Maharaj for example had undertaken the Narmada Pradaskina bare footed. The Shree Swami
Samarth Trust of Dombivli, has been undertaking Padyatra for several years and these have been with footwear.
The Warkari sect in Maharashtra undertake a padayatra each year that starts from where they live and culminates
in Pandharpur, the sacred place of Vitthal, said to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
Abbreviated translation from Chaitanyachaa Naathpanthi, a book written on Shree Anna Limaye, saint from
Dombivli: Padyatra is an expedition that is not just a test of one’s physical strength, but also an interaction with the
nature. Spirituality is not just in reading and writing of books. It is also in nature and padyatra gives an opportunity
to experience and absorb this spiritual strength in one’s self. The spiritual energy will give an inner light that can
last upto 6-8 months after the padyatra. Padyatra is a combination of extensive physical excursion, reciting Swami
name, reciting a guru mantra (if given), meditating, pranayama, remembering and cherishing the memories of
Sadguru, spiritual discussion, working constraints of food on the body and achieving a balance of all this that
results in sweet experience and spiritual upliftment.

even today, experience Shree Swami Samarth. The sub-editor of a famous

newspapers in Pune, Maharashtra, used to converse with Shree Swami Samarth.

Before writing this book, I was fortunate enough to experience Shree Swami
Samarth in my dream.

There was a massive decorative tent setup at some auspicious event. This setup
was being used for serving lunch to over 1000 devotees. Rows of plates were laid
out for people to sit and have their lunch. Several volunteers were running
around serving food to the crowd. I was being asked many times to have my
lunch but every time I refused citing that I want to have lunch with Swami
Samarth.

While I was waiting, I saw Swami Samarth standing with a silver plate full of
sweetmeats. I was overwhelmed and did not know what to say. Swami Samarth
called me and said, “You were looking for me? Here, take this sweet as Prasad.” I
consumed the Prasad with joy and woke up suddenly, realizing that it was four in
the morning!

A fortnight later, a publisher asked me if I could write a biography on Shree

Swami Samarth. I nodded and with Swami Samarth’s blessings completed the
biography.

17. Swami takes the patient to clinic

One day I met Dr. Prabhu, a physician by profession. We had an interesting
discussion about spirituality and miracles. I said to him, “I don’t believe in
miracles.” To this Dr. Prabhu promptly replied, “Even I did not, until I had that
one special patient who changed it all. After the patient was completely cured, he
said something and that made me ponder deeper about life.” I was curious to
know what the patient said and anxiously questioned Dr. Prabhu, “What did he
say?” Dr. Prabhu calmly replied, “The patient said that he was thankful to Shree
Swami Samarth who got him to the clinic. For eight days, he was in agonizing

37

pain and there was no hope of any cure. At that time of despair, he turned to
Shree Swami Samarth and prayed for help. That is when Shree Swami Samarth
brought him to my clinic. Swami Samarth did not know who I was, what my
name is or any other identification. To add to it my clinic does not even have any
signboards outside.”

18. Blessed in Physical form

One day of my life which I can never forget is 30th November 1997. It was a
golden day in my life. That night, at the dawn of 1st December, I had the
privilege of experiencing Shree Akkalkot Swami who manifested in a physical
form!

Lying on the bed with my eyes closed, trying to sleep, I could smell the fragrance
of fresh flowers. Suddenly, the rooms seemed to be filled with this beautiful
fragrance. Not knowing what was happening, I opened my eyes. What do I see is
beyond astonishment; Parabrahman24 was standing in front me!

What were my thoughts, my feelings at that time, I can’t explain.! He had tall
long hands, big eyes, and a Rudrashkha25 garland around his neck. To
experience Swami Samarth in his physical form; was; as if all my receivable
goodwill of a million births came together for such an astronomical event. Seeing
His blissful, majestic, omnipresent form, I was head over heels in joy. I
exclaimed, “Swami, you are at my house” and immediately bowed at His feet to
take blessings. But soon, the blissful expression, turned into a piercing glare. He
said, “Why are you sleeping, wake up! Start working!” I was confused, so I asked,
“What work?” He replied, “Write a series of biographies of saints from India.”

24 Parabrahman: As per Wikipedia, it is the highest brahman, beyond all descriptions and conceptualizations.

Rudrashkha: A small fruit found only in North India on a rare tree, known to assist in spirituality

38

His left hand was on His waist and His right index finger was pointed at me,
guiding me. I gladly said, “As you wish.” I bowed to take his blessings and the
flowers in His hands fell on me. I got up to look at Him but He had disappeared.
I cried out loud, “Swami, Swami!” and woke up. There was no one there and the
clock was ticking four am.

19. Swami’s poem of one thousand appellations

Penning poetry has been my hobby for a very long time now. In 1971, I wrote an
anonymous poem on an adveeteeya26 person; someone who is unique,
matchless, and unrivalled.

All this while, I hadn’t heard of Akkalkot Swami or even seen his picture. I had
no idea that such a magnanimous saint existed in the Guru Dattatreya27 family.
In hindsight, even though I didn’t know Him, I think that he must have been
watching me.

In 1960, I was staying in Kirloskar Wadi, a small township about 20 kilometers

south of Pune. One of my colleagues, a Swami devotee, stayed there. He had a
photo of Swami at his house. Usually when someone looks at a picture, they are
always curious about its nature and ask questions. But in this case, I never asked
whose photo it was and my colleague never talked about it either. After about 5-6
years, I moved near Pune and later after 5 years, subsequently moved to
Dombivli.

Here; I found Swami Samarth somewhat unexpectedly. One fine day in 1983, the
revered saint Shree Anna Limaye of Dombivli from the lineage of Shree Swami
Samarth asked me, “Can you express Swami’s one thousand names in poetic
form?” I agreed immediately and started working on this project.

26 Adveeteeya: Non-dualness
27
Dattatreya: The primordial guru. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dattatreya

39
||Shree Swami Samarth||

To understand more about Swami Samarth, I read whatever I could lay my

hands on: biographies, stories, holy books. I started realizing about Shree Swami
Samarth and slowly began to weave words into a final piece. The end product
was a forty-two-stanza poem describing the one thousand appellations of Swami.
I had written an anonymous poem in 1971 and Swami’s poem was completed in
1983, exactly 12 years later. I shared my poem with people around to receive
feedback and it was good.

5 years later, I was invited to Badlapur, near Dombivli to visit an idol that was
being unveiled. Due to work related reasons I was unable to make it. Another
opportunity came my way to visit the same place in Badlapur and I could not go.

They say the third time is a charm. I finally got the opportunity to go and I did
not miss it. Same day, the individual who invited me to Badlapur had a vision
that a thousand leaves were coming to his house. That evening, I went with my
wife to see the idol. People were singing hymns in His praise accompanied by the
host on the tabla28. On glancing at the idol, I felt that Swami was angrily looking
at me. Not knowing what it was, I heard familiar words and realized that people
were reciting my poem! After the singing was done, I introduced myself to the
host and then glanced at the idol. This time the angry looking idol was seemed
pleased and had a serene look.

20. Know the unknown through His Grace

Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak was a well-known social reformer and
independence activist of India. He was spearheading the fight for India’s

28

40
||Shree Swami Samarth||

independence in the early 1900’s. Due to his dissent of the British Raj, the
British Empire imprisoned him in Mandalay.

During his time in prison, Tilak wrote a book in Marathi on the Bhagvad Gita
called “Gita Rahasya”, which means, ‘The Secrets of the Gita’. The book is Tilak’s
analysis of the Bhagvad Gita, where he wrote that actions are more important
than knowledge. He very aptly described the intricacies within The Bhagvad Gita
and the understanding that he gained from reading the divine text.

Tilak finished writing the book while in jail and published it after he was
released. Once the book was published, numerous pundits called for a boycott of
the book as they opined that the book was against sanyasi principles. Assemblies
and demonstrations were conducted against the book. Tilak was not sure as to
why people were against his book but he knew in his heart that what he had
written in the book was right.

To seek some guidance, Tilak sought to meet Sadguru Balkrishna Maharaj

Suratkar, a disciple of Taat Maharaj under the lineage of Shree Swami Samarth.
Sadguru Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar is a Sadguru, to many, and has initiated
several individuals to follow the path of Shree Swami Samarth. Through a friend,
Tilak went to meet Sadguru Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar. The friend bowed at
the feet of Sadguru Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar Maharaj and introduced Tilak.
Tilak as per custom, said “Namaste” and stood there waiting to hear the Sadguru
speak. The friend told Suratkar Maharaj about the book and the resistance Tilak
had been getting from different pundits. Sadguru Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar,
listened intently and then for a moment he was still. Thereafter addressing Tilak,
he said, “We will keep this book in our sacred place. While you were writing
about this book in Mandalay jail, Shree AdyaSankararcharya, himself had come
to your dreams and showered his blessings on you. This book is immortal. Why
are you getting worried about such petty resistance from the pundits? Tilak was
amazed. He replied that he knew about the dream, but as he was not a firm
believer of dreams he had not revealed it to anyone. He asked Sadguru
Balkrishna Maharaj Suratkar Maharaj, “How do you know about the dream?”

41
||Shree Swami Samarth||

Shree Suratkar Maharaj pointed to the photo of Shree Swami Samarth and
replied, “Balwantrao, this is all due to His blessings!”

21. Swami communicates

Girnar mountains are well known in the state of Gujarat as the padukas of Shree
Dattatreya are located there. Every year, a great number of devotees visit this
holy place with a hope to catch a glimpse of the divine padukas. Mr. Hari
Namdev Dahaatonde has visited this place 20 times and written a book about
the padukas. He also penned a book about Akkalkot, the abode of Shree Swami
Samarth. In the latter, the author shared an incident in the foreword on his
meeting with Mr. S. Khanvelkar. Neither of them knew each other, but Mr.
Khanvelkar told Mr. Hari about his visits to Girnar, without even visiting the
Girnar or reading Mr. Hari’s book. This came as a shock to Mr. Hari and he
asked Mr. Khanvelkar, “How is it possible that you know everything without ever
being there?” Mr. Khanvelkar replied, “Shree Swami Samarth has narrated it to
me!”

Brief background on Shree Swami Samarth of Akkalkot

The earliest historical record of Shree Swami Samarth dates to when he was 8 years
old in Northern India near Hastinapur. This record reveals the fact that he was born
around 418 AD. Thereafter there aren't many records of his childhood, though one
can imagine the spiritual progress he must have made as he grew.

Sadgurunchi CharanaSeva a book written by spiritual guru, Shree Limaye, from

Swami’s lineage, states that Swami Samarth could have been in a meditative state
for over 700-800 years. It is said that Swami was in the samadhi state for a long
time and then eventually regained his physical form and became a beacon of
guiding light in our lives. During his samadhi state, an ant hill formed around Swami
Samarth. A mere wood cutter thought it was a big tree and hit it with his axe. To his
surprise, the wood cutter saw a gush of blood spurting out of the tree. Extremely
scared, the wood cutter did not know what to do. The ant hill had broken and out
came Swami Samarth in his physical form. The frightened wood cutter fell at Shree
Swami Samarth’s feet and pleaded forgiveness. Swami Samarth forgave him and
thanked him for helping him to exit the Samadhi. This event occurred in 1149 AD.

After returning to His physical form, Swami Samarth travelled all around India. He
started his journey from Kolkata, travelled through Bengal and visited the Kali
temple. From there he visited Haridwar, travelled further north to Kedareshwar
and then came down south to the Godavari river in Central India via the Narmada
river. After spending some time along the banks of river Godavari, He travelled to
Hyderabad, then to Begumpur and westward to Pandharpur. From Pandharpur he
came to Mohol and then to Solapur, finally settling in Akkalkot. In Northern India,
he was known as Chancalbharati and after settling in Akkalkot, he came to be
known as Akkalkot Swami.

Am sure all of you are thinking, why would Swami Samarth decide to settle in
Akkalkot? As is given in his biography by Bhrahmanistha Shree Vaamorikar,
Akkalkot means the mind, the brain, which is the source of all thoughts, thinking
and bad habits. One who can control his mind, can control the senses and the body.

43
||Shree Swami Samarth||

Shree Swami Samarth lived in Akkalkot for the rest of his physical existence until
1878. His last discourse to all his disciple’s and bhakts was to have faith in Him,
follow his principles and continue to perform selfless service. When he was about
to leave His physical form, there was a huge gathering in Akkalkot. Even a doctor
was on standby for emergencies. At one moment his pulse stopped, the doctor
checked and said, “All is over”. After a few minutes to everyone’s surprise Swami
woke up and said the following shlok and made everyone recite it 25 times.

अनन्याभिन्तयन्तो मां ये जना: पयुथ पासते ।

ते षां भनत्याभभयु क्तानां योगक्षे म वहाम्यहम्॥
ananyāścintayantō māṁ yē janā: paryupāsatē|
tēṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yōgakṣēma vahāmyaham||

Those who take refuge in me, think of none but me, always unite in me; To them I
take the responsibility of granting everything needed and preserving everything
granted

After leaving His physical form, He communicated to his disciple Shree Beedkar
Maharaj that He will live on forever. Ever since, His bhakts have felt His presence
and have been benefiting by his guidance.

In late 1990’s, late Paramhansa Shree Anna Limaye from Dombivli met Shree
Swami Samarth. A staunch devotee of Shree Swami Samarth, Anna Limaye visited
Omkareshwar in the year 2000. Anna Limaye took a trip to the same place where
Beedkar Maharaj during his Narmada pradakshina is known to have met Shree
Swami Samarth. Here Anna Limaye could feel the presence of Shree Swami
Samarth in the form of a wave running down his body.

Different people have experienced Swami Samarth in different ways. Their

experiences have been complied into the book Swami Mahatyma. The same book is
now available for you to read and experience the greatness of Swami Samarth.

One candle will dispel darkness and light hundreds and thousands of lamps.
Similarly, Shree Swami Samarth’s guiding light has lit the lamps of self-realization in
the hearts of millions of devotees creating disciples who continue to follow the
righteous path of Shree Swami Samarth. Shree Swami Samarth continues to shelter
those who tread this path to attain salvation.
