SMALL GRAMMAR POINTS


A. Use of need
1. Difference between Need and Want:
- Want can be used to indicate the desire for something.
- Need means that the thing desired is very important or required.

Example 1: - I want to take a vacation. We need money for a vacation.

 Note: Need and want can have the same meaning when used by a person in a position
of authority.
Example 2: I need (want) you to get into groups of three to discuss the assignment.

2. Need as a noun
(to) Need = be in need of

Example 3: I need a job = I’m in need of a job

Example 4: People have many objective needs such as food, water, shelter and even air.

3. Need has an adjective form: Needy

Example 5: There are many needy people living on the streets.

4. Passive voice of Need

Example 6: I need to clean the floor => The floor needs to be cleaned /The floor needs cleaning

5. Need as an auxiliary verb


Need not = Needn’t = don’t/doesn’t need to = don’t have to

Example 7: You've got plenty of time. You needn't hurry.

Example 8: We needn't hurry = we don't need to hurry = we don’t have to hurry

B. Use of Pretty
1. Pretty is often used to mean that something is nice to look at.
