Many American artists have visited Italy and Greece for the past several years. The

influence of both Roman and Greek art on the American art industry is undeniable. In the mid of

the19th century, the number of American artists visiting the Greek region increased. During this

period, impressionism was on the rise whereby artists from all over the world started

communicating with each other leading to the exploration of new ideas (Holt, p. 21). Through the

process of sharing thoughts, the American artists were able to replicate the works of the Greeks.

Therefore, the arts found in the USA that resembles the Greek arts are as a result of influence

rather than a debt.

While looking between Greek art and Roman art, a lot of similarities develop. In fact, a

lot of people may mistake Roman art with Greek art. The similarities between the two arts

derived from the fact that the Romans copied the way of the art of the Greeks after Rome

conquered Greece during 168 BC. However, if the Romans had opted not to copy Greek art

during the era, there could be a massive difference between the two arts today. There were

significant differences that existed between the Roman art and the Greece art way long before

168 BC. For instance, the ideas that pushed for the art between the two empires were different. In

classical Rome, art focused on realism while in ancient Greece art focused on idealism (Belting,

p.25). Therefore, if the Romans did not follow the way of the art of the Greeks, their art today

would portray realistic portraits and sculptures rather than ideal physical portraits.

Gothic architecture is one of the many arts that portray a comprehensive representation of

culture during their time of occurrence. Gothic architecture represents the powers of the rulers of

that era. During the medieval period, Gothic architecture was one of the art that marked the

golden time of European religious architecture (Frankl et. Al., p.2). The architecture technology

came after the Romanesque architecture and started in France during the 12th century. It later

dispersed to the rest of Europe mainly to the South and Middle Europe.

Gothic buildings included illuminated entrances and a lot of sculpture inside them.

During the Gothic era, cathedrals played the role of art galleries (Frankl et. Al., p.6). The

carvings inside these cathedrals ranged from religious to human character portraits. Most of

Gothic buildings were constructed using limestone. However, some of the buildings were built

using sandstone, marble, stones and bricks (Frankl et. Al., p.8). One of the main features of the

Gothic architecture is the ogival arch that towered over the buildings. The design of the Gothic

buildings aimed at representing the might of God and the institution that it serves.
