An Invocation of the Black Bride – Kali Kallah

In Hebrew, as in Sanskrit, “kali” means “black,” and Kali Kallah (“Black Bride”) is a name given to
Lilith or Lilatu – the dark aspect of Sophia or Shekinah. According to the oral tradition of Sophian
Gnosticism, Eve and Lilith are joined in the Anointed Bride (Kallah Messiah), St. Mary Magdalene,
she representing an avatar of the Goddess, Sophia – including both the dark and bright aspects of
Sophia (Sophia Nigrans and Sophia Stellarum).

In our lineage of Gnosticism we feel it is necessary to embrace and experience both the bright and
dark aspects of Sophia to realize the fullness of her Divine Gnosis – thus, diverse methods of
prayer, meditation and sacred ritual invoking various aspects of Sophia appear in our oral tradition.

With the onset of evening, I found myself enrapt with presence of Kali Kallah, so I thought perhaps
I’d share a traditional Sophian practice of invoking her, written in the form of an inspiration that
arose in the power of the moment.

On the new moon, standing in the wilderness of the desert, under the starry night sky, I light the
fire and let it grow, in the womb of silence, waiting.

Then, when it is time, and the fire blazes, I pour forth the libations and make offerings, calling
upon you, Kali Kallah – Lilith!

I take up your chant and gazing, I behold you, dancing in the flames of fire; Nubian Woman…

Allah Lala Lalil Lola Lalu Lilatu

Leaping and laughing, screeching and howling, speaking a tongue such as neither man nor angel
understands – speak the Living Logos, giving birth, and I will listen and bear witness: seeking to
know nothing, seeking to understand nothing; seeking to be nobody, but what I am in You.

I dance with you and die in you, and I am reborn as myself; no longer an appearance of mortal
name and form, but rising up like smoke – I am Pure Spirit.

O Mistress of the Dark Night, O Mystical Death, let me enter your embrace and know you most
intimately; set my spirit free in You – Cessation.

You are Primordial Emptiness, which is the Divine Fullness, as in the beginning, so in the end; I
abide in the perfection of silence, but now awake as I am – Gnostic Being. Amen.

I shall honor Sophia Nigrans all the days of my life, an in her I shall know Sophia Stellarum – my
beloved Sophia of Radiant Darkness, who is White Brilliance!

same one may envision oneself in the desert, building the fire, abiding, making offerings, and
invoking Lilith with the chant.

**There are many different reasons why Sophian practitioners might invoke Lilith: to remove
hindrances or obstructions, to seek healing of deep wounds, to bring a new flow of creative
inspiration, to invoke change or transformation, to overcome fears and insecurities, to integrate
our shades and shadows, to experience self-transcendence, to gain insight into hidden things;
these are some of the reasons a practitioner might invoke her.

Invoking darkness with a finite mind

by Elishevah1970 Posted: Sun Jun 04, 2006 10:01 am

Greetings Tua Malachi,

I am brand new to both Gnosticism and to this forum so please bear with me. It is my estimation
that a finite mind should NOT go seeking out the dark aspect of ANY Celestial being. Especially the
vunerable, finite mind of humankind. Who ate of the Tree of Life before they were prepared fully
for it. They have just enough gnosis and intelligence to get themselves into a dire predicament and
not enough gnosis or intelligence to get themselves out of it. Thus making their Soul's progression
vunerable through shattering through Divine dark forces.

Why seek out the wrathful or destructive element of any Benevolent force, let alone one who is
somewhat neutral or neutral-evil in my estimation (as it stands now).

Shalom, Elishevah,
And welcome to the forum. I understand your discomfort with the premise of this practice, but I
can also tell you that every spiritual tradition with the exception of mainstream Christianity has
similar practices that use "wrathful" or dark aspects of the divine or of enlightened mind as
meditative tools. This is especially common practice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

I can also tell you from my own experience that I done some work with this practice (with a little
encouragement from Tau Malachi) and have found it extraordinarily healing. You could think of it
in terms similar to the Jungian idea of reintegrating the shadow elements of the personality.

Having said that, it is also true that these practices are not for everyone and that each individual,
ideally with the counsel of his or her teacher, should choose practices that seem appropriate for
his or her needs at any given time. Certainly if the practice makes you uncomfortable, pass it by.
There are many other meditations that are offered in the Sophian tradition that will connect you
with the Divine in the persons of Christ and of Sophia.

Blessings,
Tamara

Invoking dark aspects of Divine Beings

by Elishevah1970 Posted: Mon Jun 05, 2006 5:25 am

Greetings Tamara,
I appreciate your gentle reminder and keen perception. Invoking the darker aspects is really NOT
for the novice. Having said that, saying so in a disclaimer may only incur the curiousity of a novice.
There is nothing as delicious as the forbidden fruit, especially when we are discussing this in
relation to the young in mind and in heart.

Ah, this is a most beautiful and intoxicating practice! In me it invokes great love and intimacy with
the Divine Mother! Perhaps it is that one of the many great gifts of Lilatu is that of fearlessness.
When fear is swept away love and joy are free to rush into the the practitioner on more levels than
my finite mind can even recognize or name at this time. Our Mother tells me, "Do not trust
appearances. Trust Me!" Amen, hallelu-yah!
May all beings be blest in the Fullness of Light!

Greetings Mary!

Yes... it is a beautiful practice. I've experienced Lilit during times where my life experiences tend
toward fear. She comes to show me that there is no need for fear, but trust.

I am reminded of the fact that Lilit's name in hebrew is Lamed Yod Lamed Yod Tav.

The letters literally mean "That which pushes you toward God" in a double portion and ends in
"unification". She is a force of movement for us toward our ultimate unity.

Shalom, +Yonah
