Ramzy Baroud: Can Christchurch heal our collective wounds?

I
visited the city of
Christchurch on May
23, 2018, as part of a
larger speaking tour in
New Zealand that also took
me to Auckland, Wellington,
Hamilton and Dunedin.
New Zealand is an
exceptional country,
different from other
countries that are often
lumped under the
generalised designation
of the “Western world”.
Almost immediately after
my arrival in Auckland, New
Zealand’s largest and most
populous city, I was struck
by the overt friendliness,
hospitality and diversity.
This is not to downgrade
the ongoing struggles in the
country, lead among them
being the campaign for
land rights as championed
by the Māori people, the
original inhabitants of New
Zealand; but, indeed, there
was something refreshingly
beautiful, about Christchurch.”

Just the fact that the
Māori language, “Te Reo”,
is one of the three official
languages in the country,
the others being English and
Sign Language, immediately
sets New Zealand apart
from other colonised spaces,
where indigenous peoples,
cultures, languages and
rights are, to various extents,
inconsequential.
It is due to the
empowered position of the
indigenous Māori culture,
that New Zealand is,
compared to other countries,
more inclusive and more
accepting of refugees and
immigrants. And that is
likely why New Zealand
– and Christchurch, in
particular – was chosen as a
target for the terrorist attacks
carried out by an Australian
national on March 15.
The Australian terrorist
– whose name will not be
mentioned here in honour of
a call made by New Zealand
Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern, as not to celebrate
the infamy of the senseless
murderer – wanted to send
a message that immigrants,
particularly Muslims, are
not safe, not even in New
Zealand.
But his attempt
backfired. Not only will
he live “the rest of his life
in isolation in prison”, as
promised by New Zealand’s
Foreign Minister, Winston
Peters, who was speaking
at the Organisation for
Islamic Cooperation (OIC)
emergency conference in
Turkey on March 22, but the
horrific crime has brought
New Zealanders even closer
together.
Sorrowful, yet beautiful
There is something
sorrowful, yet beautiful,
about Christchurch. This
small, welcoming city,
located on the east coast of
New Zealand’s South Island,
was devastated on February
22, 2011, by a massive
earthquake that killed 185
people and destroyed much
of the town.
Last May, I spoke at
Christchurch’s Cardboard
Cathedral, an innovative
structure that was built as
a temporary replacement
to the Anglican Cathedral
that was destroyed in the
earthquake.
In my talk, I commended
the people for their beautiful
church, and for their own
resilience in the face of
hardship. The diversity,
openness and solidarity of
the audience reflected the
larger reality throughout the
city, in fact, throughout the
country.
For me, Christchurch
was not a place of tragedy,
but a source of hope.
My audience, which
also included members of
the Muslim community,
some coming from Al Noor
Mosque – the main target of
the recent attack – listened
and engaged me as I argued
that the genuine authentic
voices of ordinary people
should be placed at the core
of our understanding of the
past, and our hope for a
better future.
While the focus of
Local News
my talk was the history
of the Palestinian people,
the message exceeded the
struggle for freedom in
Palestine into the struggle
and rights of all indigenous
groups, guided by such
uplifting experiences as that
of the Māori people of New
Zealand itself.
Unconditional solidarity
I also had the chance
to meet with Marama
Davidson, co-leader of the
Green Party, among other
MPs. It was strange to be in
a position where solidarity
from politicians came across
as genuine as that of the
unconditional solidarity
of ordinary activists –
once again, highlighting
the uniqueness of New
Zealand’s progressive
politics and leadership.
Experiencing that
myself, it was no surprise
to see the outpouring of
genuine love and support
by Prime Minister Ardern
and many members of her
cabinet and parliament
following the mosque attack.
The fact that she, along
with numerous women
throughout the country,
wore symbolic head-
scarves in order to send a
message to Muslims that
they are not alone, while
countless thousands of New
Zealanders mourned the
victims who perished in Al
Noor and Linwood mosques,
was unprecedented in the
recent history of Western-
Muslim relationship.
In fact, on Friday,
March 22, when all of New
Zealand’s TV and radio
stations transmitted the call
for Muslim prayer, and as
Muslims and non-Muslims
rallied together in a massive
display of human solidarity
while mourning their dead,
for a moment, all Muslims
became New Zealanders and
all New Zealanders became
Muslims.
At the end of my talk, a
group of Muslims from the
mosque approached me with
a gift, a box of dates to break
my fast, as it was the month
of Ramadan, the holy month
of fasting and repentance for
Muslims worldwide. With
much gratitude, I took the
box of dates and promised to
visit Al Noor when I return
to the country in the future.
A few months later, as I
watched the horrific images
on television of the terrorist
attack that struck this
peaceful city, I immediately
thought of the Cardboard
Cathedral, of the beautiful
solidarity of the Māori, of
the numerous embraces of so
many New Zealanders, and,
of the kindly Muslims and
the box of dates.

Peaceful co-existence
I also understood why
the undeserving-to-be
named terrorist chose to
strike Christchurch, and
the underlying message
he wanted to send to
Muslims, immigrants, New
Zealanders and all of those
who champion peaceful
co-existence and tolerance
worldwide.
But he failed. In fact, all
other foot soldiers of racism
and hate will continue to fail
because tragedy often unites
us. Collective pain helps
us see each other as human
beings first, where our
differences, however great,
can never be enough to
justify or even explain why

had to die, along with 49
other, beautiful and innocent
people.
However, one can be
comforted by the Māori
saying, “Ka mate te kāinga
tahi, ka ora te kāinga rua”
– “when one house dies,
the second lives”. It means
that good things can always
emerge from misfortune.
It will take much time
for Christchurch, and the
whole of New Zealand,
to heal from this terrible
misfortune. But the
strength, will and courage
of so many communities
should be enough to turn
a horrific terrorist act into
an opportunity to heal our
collective wounds, not just
in New Zealand, but the
world over.

Gun law changes: Thousands
of submissions received

ut there are concerns
about the pace of
change, with just one
day set aside for oral
submissions from the public, and
fears the implications have not had
enough time to be thought through.

for Federated Farmers. He is one
of a few dozen people to be invited
to present to MPs tomorrow on the
new gun ban and buy-back.
He said he has had one day’s
notice because of the compressed
timeline.
“Well it’s not ideal, the
timeframe makes it harder to put
forward a well considered and
worked on submission.”
Usually people apply to
address MPs in person. This time,
a select group of about 25 people
are to present - they’ll each get ten
to fifteen minutes.
Labour MP and committee
chair Michael Wood said the
submitters were chosen to
represent a cross-section of views.
“This is a shorter timeframe
than usual, but we are dealing with
a situation in which 50 people were
murdered by one of these weapons.
“And the New Zealand public
expect us to move with some
reasonable speed on this issue,
while making sure there is some
oversight of the legislation.”
ACT’s David Seymour has
been the sole voice of opposition
during the gun debate - chiefly
upset about the pace of change.
He said MPs were showing total
contempt for the law-making
process.
“I don’t think people are
taking seriously enough the
desecration of democracy by
taking out the whole part where
we actually listen to the public and
consult before we make a law that
affects them.”
But National Party leader
Simon Bridges is comfortable with
the timeline.
“There’s a sense of urgency
and unity now, the government is
seizing upon that, I get that and
we’re up for that.”

straightforward and had near
unanimous support in Parliament.
“If everyone’s in agreement then
understandably there’s good to
move quickly.”
People are also welcome to

done so since Tuesday.
The deadline for written
submissions closes at 6pm
Thursday, after which MPs will
take stock and consider if any
changes need to be made.
Gun owners being ‘completely
ignored’
Gun traders and competition
shooters are urging the government
to put the brakes on the fast-track
changes, warning the implications
have not been weighed up.
Jim Yates is the chief
executive of Guns NZ, which runs
a retail store in Rotorua and an
online shop.
He started the company six
years ago to bring in high quality
rifles, pistols and accessories for
the competitive shooters.
They typically hold
e-endorsments on their gun
licenses, which are part of the
proposed ban.
He said lawmakers should
not ignore them.
“Every little community in
New Zealand has a rifle club, a
pistol club, a skeet club and this
is where everybody gets together
with their friends and enjoys their
sport.
“People with [firearms]
licences in this country and their
families represent probably 10-
15 percent of the New Zealand
population, but we’re just being
completely ignored,” he said.
Deerstalkers Association
spokesperson Bill O’Leary said
quite a few of its members were
competition shooters and the
proposed ban would spell the end
of those events.
He said competitors had a
lot to lose.
“The investment in not only
the cost of the firearm that they’ve
been using ... but there’s also the
fact that people have put time and
effort and ... made a significant
commitment to honing their skills
in a significant competition,” Mr
O’Leary said.
Mr Yates said the
implications of a ban had not been
thought through.
“The amount of money that
New Zealand will lose in tourist
revenue from the competition
shooting is in the tens of millions
of dollars, because this country
hosts numerous international
events all over the country at
various venues, that now are
illegal,” Mr Yates said.
He said he believed the $100 to
$200 million estimate for the
cost of the buy back was way too
low, estimating it could cost the
government up to $1.5 billion.
Gun dealers excluded will be hit

The government has also
said it had no plans to reimburse
dealers like Mr Yates, and he said
that was unfair.
“Dealers ... were granted
permission by the police to run a
business and to import firearms
for their customers and for them to
now say, that these people have no
rights but all their customers have
rights for reimbursement, isn’t
right in a democratic society,” he
said.
And he said Mr Nash’s
suggestion that dealers could
return their stock to suppliers was
laughable.
“As far as (Stuart) Nash is
concerned, ‘well dealers can just
send it back overseas’ well you
can’t do that, it’s impractical.
“Stuff has been on the
shelves for two or three years. Old
models, old products, whose going
to pay for that? Most of the stuff
has end use agreements for New
Zealand, it can’t be sent out of
New Zealand,” he said.
Mr Nash said at this stage
dealers were not part of the
buy-back scheme, but they were
welcome to make a submission.

go ahead on Anzac Day, as

Better cardiorespiratory fitness leads to longer life

in mortality risk when
compared to lower
performers
Cleveland Clinic researchers
have found that better
cardiorespiratory fitness leads to
longer life, with no limit to the
benefit of aerobic fitness.
Researchers retrospectively
studied 122,007 patients who
underwent exercise treadmill
testing at Cleveland Clinic between
Jan. 1, 1991, and Dec. 31, 2014,
to measure all-cause mortality
relating to the benefits of exercise
and fitness. The paper was
published today in the Journal of
the American Medical Association
Network Open.
The study found that increased
cardiorespiratory fitness was
directly associated with reduced
long-term mortality, with no limit
on the positive effects of aerobic
fitness. Extreme aerobic fitness was
associated with the greatest benefit,
particularly in older patients
(70 and older) and in those with
hypertension.
“Aerobic fitness is something
that most patients can control. And
we found in our study there is no
limit to how much exercise is too
much,” said Wael Jaber, M.D.,
Cleveland Clinic cardiologist
and senior author of the study.
“Everyone should be encouraged
to achieve and maintain high
fitness levels.”
The risk associated with poor
cardiorespiratory fitness was
comparable to or even exceeded
that of traditional clinical risk
factors, such as cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and smoking.
The study’s findings emphasize
the long-term benefits of exercise
and fitness, even to extreme levels,
regardless of age or coexistent
cardiovascular disease.

Several recent studies have
suggested associations between
extreme exercise and certain
adverse cardiovascular findings,
such as atrial fibrillation and
coronary artery disease. However,
the newly published study from
Cleveland Clinic found that
extreme fitness provided additional
survival benefit over more modest
levels of fitness, and that extremely
fit patients lived the longest.
“We were particularly
interested in the relationship
between extremely high fitness and
mortality” said Kyle Mandsager,
M.D., an electrophysiology
fellow at Cleveland Clinic and
the lead author of the study. “This
relationship has never been looked
at using objectively measured
fitness, and on such a large scale.”
All patients had previously
undergone stress tests at Cleveland
Clinic, and were broken up into
five performance groups -- elite,
high, above average, below
average and low. Elite performers
were defined as having aerobic
fitness in the top two and half
percent by age and gender, and
demonstrated fitness levels
comparable to endurance athletes.
Long-term survival was adjusted
for a patient’s age, sex, height,
weight, BMI, medications and
comorbidities.
When the subgroups were
analyzed by age, the survival
benefit of elite versus high
performance was most notable in
older patients. In those over the
age of 70, elite performers had
a nearly 30 percent reduced risk
of mortality compared to high
performers. In younger age groups
there was no statistical difference
in outcomes between elite and high
performers.
When the subgroups were
analyzed by comorbidities, all-
cause mortality inversely related to
cardiorespiratory fitness and was
lowest in the elite performers. For
those patients with hypertension,
the elite performers again showed
a nearly 30 percent reduction in
all-cause mortality compared to
high performers. For all other
comorbidity subgroups there was
no statistical difference in survival
rates between the elite and high
performers.
It is important to note that the
study analyzed findings over a
large population, and individual
patients should always check with
their healthcare provider before
starting an exercise program.

Anti-Pollution Skin Care Is The Latest Beauty Trend
You Should Know About
Dermatologists recommend adding antioxidants into your skin care routine to fight the
S
kin care routines can be
tailored to address pretty
much any issue, be it acne,
dry skin, clogged pores or
even the effects of air pollution.
That last one might seem a
little odd or gimmicky, but as it
happens, anti-pollution skin care
has become a growing trend in
the beauty industry. Brands like
Kiehl’s and Drunk Elephant have
released products that claim to
protect skin against pollutants in
the air.
Air pollution’s effects on our
health have been studied for a
long time. In terms of skin care,
there is research that suggests
pollution can lead to things like
inflammation and premature aging,
so the increasing popularity of
anti-pollution beauty and skin care
products isn’t a coincidence.
“Our skin impacts what we
are [absorbing] into our body. We
have to protect ourselves from the
outer world,” Natalya Rachkova,
an aesthetician and the co-founder
of The Better Skin Co., told
HuffPost. We already know what
we’re supposed to eat and that we
should exercise and drink water,
she said, “but we also have to
protect ourselves from our outer
environment.”
We spoke to dermatologists to
find out more about anti-pollution
skin care, including what it really
is and how it works to protect us.
Before we dive into what anti-
pollution skin care is, it’s important
to look at how pollution actually
affects the skin.
According to Dr. Anne Chapas,
a dermatologist at Union Square
Laser Dermatology in New
York, air pollution contains a
combination of tiny particles called
particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide
and chemicals like polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons.
“The exact mechanism of how
they cause skin aging is not clear,
but it could include causing more
oxidative damage, increasing
skin inflammation, changing
the skin microflora or activation
of acyl hydrocarbon receptor
pathways,” she said. “Whatever
the mechanism, the result seems
to be increased wrinkles and
effects of air pollution
pigmentation.”
All those tiny particles can
also penetrate and clog our pores,
Dr. Devika Icecreamwala, a
dermatologist based in Berkeley,
California, told HuffPost. As
a result, “We’re noticing how
pollution [is] causing the skin to
look really dull, uneven and even
discolored,” she said.
Icecreamwala also said that
prolonged exposure to pollutants
in the air can contribute to a
breakdown of collagen.
That’s where “anti-pollution
skin care” comes in.
Anti-pollution skin care,
then, is meant to “counteract the
particulates in the air that lead to
damaged skin,” Chapas said.
As Icecreamwala put it, the
point of using anti-pollution skin
care products is to “remove those
tiny micro-particles from the
pores so it’s not really clogging
them anymore and also protect
the skin from the pollution that
can penetrate the deeper layers,
because that pollution can actually
break down collagen.”
The goal is to make a sort of
barrier between your skin and
pollutants in the air, she said.
How can we actually fight
pollution with skin care products?
According to both
Icecreamwala and Chapas,
antioxidants, particularly vitamin
C, play a big part in protecting
our skin from the effects of
pollution in the air. They both
suggested incorporating a vitamin
C serum into your daily skin care
routine and recommended the
same product: Skinceuticals C E
Ferulic. (It’s pricey at $180, but
even our own editor swears by it.
If you’re looking for some other
recommendations, we’ve got
plenty.)
Chapas said that vitamin C and
other antioxidants help block the
formation of free radicals (unstable
atoms that can damage cells and
potentially lead to premature
aging) and “pigment pathways.”
“Melanin blockers, such as
niacinamide, are also helpful,”
she said, adding, “It’s important
to have an intact skin barrier by
using moisturizers with ceramides

and not over-treating the skin with
retinol or acids.”
Along with topical products,
Icecreamwala said that it’s
important to include vitamin
C and other antioxidants into
our diets, as they’re “going to
protect our skin and bodies from Venetian, Roller, Verticals, Wooden Blind Cleaning
inflammation.” She also said she’s
a fan of exfoliating agents, like Onsite at your place
salicylic and lactic acid, for taking
off “the grime from the skin and
[unclogging] the pores.”
Are certain people more prone
to the effects of pollution on skin?

Can we reverse any of the
effects caused by pollution?
Prevention is really the first
step to combating the effects
of pollution, but Icecreamwala
noted that using antioxidants,
for example, can encourage the
regeneration of collagen once it’s
broken down. It should be noted
that no product or ingredient is
magic, however.
In Chapas’ opinion, laser
treatments ”offer a faster and
more effective way to combat
skin pigmentation and damage,
[and] give the skin a healthier and
younger appearance.”
And, of course, you should
always be wearing sunscreen,
which helps prevent additional
damage caused by the sun’s UVA
and UVB rays. According to
Icecreamwala, protecting your
skin with sunscreen ― she prefers
mineral sunscreens ― helps keep
collagen from degrading as well.

Political mileage
BJP leaders, cabinet ministers
and hundreds of thousands of
Modi's online supporters soon
followed and added the 'chowkidar'
prefix to their names. The hashtag
used by the Indian prime minister,
who has a nearly 47 million
followers on Twitter, trended for
several days.
For months, Gandhi has
relentlessly taunted Modi with
his 'Chowkidar chor hai' slogan,
accusing the government of
corruption and granting favours to
corporations that are close to the
prime minister. Modi and his BJP
party have denied the corruption
claims.
This is not the first time
that Modi and his party have
successfully turned opposition
criticism into political campaigns.

are not being talked about," Ankit

But BJP's national spokesman

campaign was adopted as a result
of the negative campaign by the
opposition.

described the marketing of Modi
as "unprecedented". "From the
government money, for example,
in the Beti bachao beti padhao
campaign, half of the funds were
spent on advertisements," Karat
said.
In December last year, the
government told parliament that
it had spent over Rs 5,200 crore
($7.5bn) in advertisements through
electronic, print and other media
since 2014.
Media reports have estimated
that the election campaign for
the BJP-led-National Democratic
Alliance (NDA), will cost around
₹2,500 crore ($3.6bn) with 20-25
creative agencies deployed to
manage its traditional and social
media strategies.
The chairman of the Perfect
Relations public relations firm,
Dilip Cherian, told Al Jazeera that
"such media campaigning has
worked for Modi in the past and he
thinks that it might work for him
again".
Cherian said that "Modi's
approach is brave" as he takes
the opposition head on with his
"offensive strategy".
"Modi's new campaign 'Main
bhi chowkidar' also allows him
to go into the area of defence and
national security which is an area
of comfort for him," Cherian said.

Captains ready for HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Qualifier events in Hong Kong

total of 28 captains
gathered in front of
Hong Kong’s iconic
harbour skyscrapers
ahead of the Cathay Pacific/
HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series
and World Rugby Sevens Series
Qualifier events, which kick off on
Friday 5 April.
Hong Kong is the seventh
round of 2019 series and the
captains representing the 16 teams
competing in the series event can
look forward to performing in front
of another sell-out crowd filling the
Hong Kong Stadium throughout
three days of thrilling rugby sevens
action.
Fiji in an interesting group at Hong Kong 7s
A
fter seven years, the Fiji
Airways Fijian 7s side
will face Australia in a
pool game at the Hong
Kong tournament. Although the
two sides have met a number of
times across the 2019 World Rugby
Sevens Series, Fiji last played the
Aussies in Happy Valley in 2012.
The Fijian 7s were victorious on
that occasion beating Australia
22-5 and later went on to win the
Hong Kong 7s title defeating New
Zealand 35-26.
The 2019 series has seen a
seesawing arm wrestle between
Australia and Fiji with the boys
in White securing victories in
Hamilton and Sydney with the
boys in Gold taking a 26-15
victory in Las Vegas. With both
teams pitted in pool C in Hong
Kong this weekend, there is sure
to be a great battle between the
pacific brothers. Fiji faces Australia
in game 2 at 5.13pm on Saturday.

side will first face Kenya on Friday
at 11.37pm FJT. And fans can
expect the usual physical encounter
between the two sides. Kenya last
played Fiji in Hong Kong in 2014

last year: “I think last year we
overestimated ourselves and so
this year we are fully focused
on the task and are not going to
underestimate anyone. Last year
was tough but we’ve learnt from
that and hopefully we can take
that experience forward into this
weekend.”

World Cup bound Jimmy Neesham was talked out of retirement
N
ew Zealand allrounder
Jimmy Neesham came
to the brink of retiring
18 months ago amid
a battle with form and injury that
had seen him fall out of love with
cricket.
Neesham spoke about his
challenging time as he soaked
up the "surreal" experience of
securing a spot in the 15-man
World Cup squad as his career
came full circle in a four-year
period. He narrowly missed the
cut for the home World Cup in
2015, an experience he described
as "gut-wrenching", when Grant
Elliott was preferred at the last
minute. Neesham found himself in
the stands at Eden Park as Elliott
struck that iconic six against South
Africa to secure a spot in the final.
Neesham was part of the
one-day side over the next two
seasons but was dropped after
the 2017 Champions Trophy. He
was determined to get his place
back but it became overwhelming,
and coupled with injury his form
faded, so he called Heath Mills, the
CEO of the New Zealand Players
Association, to tell him he wanted
to quit having reached the point
where he would open his curtains
and hope it was raining.
"It came as close as it could
get," Neesham said. "I actually
called Heath Mills and told him I
was going to retire so I owe a lot
to him to convince me to take a
