Teaching Notes (we compiled both our teaching notes in this document):

-We’ve noticed that the students get very excited when Ms. Kate, the snack lady, comes
in and talks about different types of food and how they taste.
-Often, when they are eating food, the children will comment things like “this taste
good!” or “this is sour!”.
-In home center, the children love playing with the food and putting the food together so
that they make different types of food. For example, once I child gave me a “sandwich”
and before I could take it they brought over a toy strawberry and said, “now it’s
dessert!”.
-When the children brush their teeth a lot of them say “this toothpaste is spicy.”. I think
this is something we can talk about when we discuss different kinds of taste.
-Food seems to be something of interest to the children, so I think we can expand on
this and discuss taste and why certain foods, maybe a food they love, tastes a certain
way.
-The students ask “why?” a lot when we discuss anything, especially when Ms. Kate
comes, so I think this curiosity will play into the question, that we can answer with
experiences, “why/how we taste different flavors?”.
-Tasting things is something most children can connect with since the majority of people
in the world have this sense. This is one of the reasons I feel that these children will be
able to understand and expand on the topic of taste.
-Some of the children, specifically the ones with behavior issues, tend to only calm
down and focus when food is involved, so if we incorporate food into some of the
experiences, I think this will encourage a lot of the children to get involved.
-After doing the hook lesson, I feel that the information we were provided can be used to
create more experiences and knowledge for the children
-The main question that the children were focused on is “Why do we taste the way they
do?”, which I believe can be expanded on in so many ways, such as the brain or the
tongue/ taste buds, which will give opportunities for new and exciting experiences for
the children.
