The Second Biggest Country in Australia

The biggest country on the continent of Australia is, of course, Australia (population 20,5 million). According
to Leonard Casely, Hutt River Province (population 60), is the second biggest. Casely, an Australian farmer, decided to
start his own ‘country’ after the disagreement with the Australian government in 1970. Hutt River Province (HRP) is
595 miles north of Perth in Australia. It is ruled by ‘prince’ Leonard and his wife ‘Princess’ Shirley.
HRP has a small church, and art gallery, a post office, a motel, a shopping centre and a campsite. It also has its
own coins, notes and postage stamps, all of which have pictures of Prince Leonard on them. The province gets most of
its money from selling sheep, wool and wild flowers. It also receives money from tourism. About 30,000 people visit
HRP every year, mostly to buy stamps and to have their picture taken with Prince Leonard and Princess Shirley or
other members of the HRP royal family.
Despite the fact that HRP is not officially recognized as a country, it has ambassadors in France, Norway,
Estonia, Madagascar, the Vatican, New Caledonia, Singapore, Spain, Russia, Scotland, Jersey and, of course,
Australia. If you want to become a citizen of HRP, just apply to Prince Leonard. You won’t be alone: over 13,000
people, living all over the world, have HRP passports!
