Hi, James Brayne here again! This is the second week of my Australian tour and today I’m at Ayers
Rock (or Uluru as it is called by the Aborigines) near Alice Springs, right in the heart of this huge
country. 1 e It was a really long journey and it was a bit boring as there isn’t really that much to
see – just desert and a few plants here and there! I didn’t even manage to see any animals as most of
them only come out when it starts to get dark. 2 a
I’m camping here for a few days with a group of students. 3 d It’s absolutely boiling during the
daytime but freezing at night so it really is extreme. No one can actually remember the last time
there was a large amount of rainfall so you can imagine how careful everyone is with water. 4 c
Tomorrow we’re hiking round Ayers Rock. It doesn’t look that big in photos but it’s actually almost
10 kilometres! The colours are amazing: reds, oranges and purples so I’m really looking forward to
taking some good photos. 5 b Next stop Darwin.

Put the letters (a–e) into the correct place in the text.
a I think it’s too hot for them in the midday sun and there certainly isn’t any shade.
b I’ll upload them on to my blog so you can see what I mean.
c It certainly is a challenge to survive out here but Greg, our guide, is trained and even knows which insects you
can eat!
d We’ve got a fantastic guide who knows so much about the history and geography of this place.
e I took the train from Adelaide because I wanted to see as much as possible and because I wanted to get a feel
for just how big Australia is.
