PRESIDENT'S NOTE
“The only reason to give a speech is to change the world.”
John F Kennedy

Speeches are the most powerful way of connecting with audiences since ancient
times. We all have heard a great number of speeches that changed the course of
history.
“Quit India” by Mahatma Gandhi (1942) inspired millions of Indians to fight for

Written by TM Shilpi. President of HSR Toastmasters Club

freedom;
“I have a dream” by Martin Luther King (1963) set the foundation for racial equality;
“Apology” by Socrates (399 BC) laid the fundamentals for western philosophy;
“Friends, Romans, Countrymen” by Marc Antonio (44 BC) led to civil war and
revolutionised Roman Empire.

All these speeches were meant to change the world, but, you would ask, does this
quote by John Kennedy apply to my speeches? How can I change the world with my
speech?

The answer is simple. To deliver a speech that changes the world, you need to deliver
a speech that influences your audience. All big things start small. You do not have to
influence the entire world with your words, you have to change the minds of people
who are listening. And everything else, will happen simultaneously.

1
How do you do that? By telling the audience something that
they do not know already. By inspiring the audience to think
and act differently. We listen to a number of speeches every
week in Toastmasters meetings. The ones that stay with us
longer are the ones that told us something new, the ones that
opened our minds to new thinking, the ones that inspired us
to take a new action.

When you start writing your next toastmasters speech, ask

Written by TM Shilpi. President of HSR Toastmasters Club

yourself - What value am I creating for the audience? What
new am I bringing to the table? What change do I seek for my
audience? And then that will be a speech to change the world.

2
EDITOR'S NOTE
Will being a life long learner alone help ?

Definitely not! And that's what I experienced on my first solo

trip to Haridwar.

Few weeks back, I read an article on solo trip. The article

intrigued me. I packed my bags to left to Delhi for my first

Written by TM Narendra. VP PR of HSR Toastmasters Club

ever solo trip. When everything was going fine, a 10 minute
delay happened because of which I missed my bus at the Bus
Stand. That was the last bus and I had to catch the bus no
matter what. After hitchhiking with 5 different motor cycle
riders, I was able to catch my bus.

That's when I realised that in addition to learning it is very

important to experience new things. Travelling to new places
can expose anyone to new experiences which can transform
his/her life.

Just like travelling, being a Toastmaster is also a way to have

new experiences. Whether it is an impromptu speech or a
last-minute role or visiting other clubs, it always teaches you
something new

Toastmasters Life is a journey on it's own and I hope

everyone grabs every opportunity that gets on their way
which exposes the person to these experiences.

LEADER’S CONUNDRUM

March is the time of the year when the clubs gear up for
renewals and target achieving DCPs for the term. During one
such club visit, I received an interesting, intriguing and
infuriating question from the club’s officers: Why do we feel
overwhelmed and what should we do?

It is true that last few months of a term require a bit more

collaboration. It is also true that it is the season of contests and
each weekend contests were hosted for either Area or Division
or both. Passionate toastmasters; like always have supported
by volunteering to help. Nothing had changed there.

It is also true that the officers of this club, had put in honest TM ANIRUDH
hard work each week since last term to meet ambitions of every Area J2 Director
member. The club is doing really well. The officers were and are
great team, nothing changed there as well.

What may have changed over these months could be their

individual progress towards their goals.

Many a times, the officers in the club get busy ensuring smooth
functioning of the club, abandoning the very reason that
brought them to a toastmasters club at the first place. The
excitement to give a prepared speech, taking evaluations and
pondering over how you could have done better provides deep
emotional satisfaction.

I answered, I used to believe a leader needs to walk the path

before preaching. I realise now that it goes beyond leading by
example, it is also important for the leader to keep him/herself
motivated, to grow oneself before helping others.

ABOUT
TOASTMASTERS
INTERNATIONAL
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organisation that operates clubs
worldwide for the purpose of promoting communication and public speaking skills.

The organisation grew out of a single club, Smedley Chapter One Club, which would
become the first Toastmasters club. It was founded by Ralph C. Smedley on October 22,
1924, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, United States. It originated as a set of classes
with the aim of improving the communication skills of the young men under his charge.

Throughout its history, Toastmasters has served over four million people, and today the
organisation serves over 357,000 members in 143 countries, through its 16,600 member
clubs.

Mission:
The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive
learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop
oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and
personal growth.

Every toastmasters meeting is divided into 3 segments:

Prepared Speech Segment: The first segment will be the “Prepared Speeches” segment,
where members will come and deliver a speech that they have already prepared based
on objectives given in the speech manual.

Table Topics Segment: The second segment is called “Table Topics” where speaker is
given an topic and the speaker has to deliver a speech impromptu for 1 to 2 mins. This
section will help us improve our Impromptu speaking skills.

Evaluation Segment: The third segment will be the "Evaluations”. In this segment, the
evaluators will point out the strengths and the scope for improvement of our speakers.

INCREASE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
WITH PATHWAYS LEVEL 3
BY TM SUBHASH

Level 3 projects has special individual project in each path. A member will
specialise himself in the path when he accomplish the main projects in the path.
Facing such interesting projects in the paths is fun challenging and interesting.

The following 10 projects from the 10 paths are

(Level 3 Projects – Paths)

Negotiate the Best Outcome -  Dynamic Leadership
Reaching Consensus – Effective Coaching
Present a Proposal – Innovative Planning
Planning and Implementing – Leadership Development
Understanding Emotional Intelligence – Motivational Strategies
Understanding Conflict Resolution -  Persuasive Influence
Persuasive Speaking – Presentation mastery
Make Connections Through Networking – Strategic Relationship
Successful Collaboration – Team Collaboration
Develop a Communication Plan – Develop a communication plan

It’s important to attend these projects during the journey these projects will tell
you the purpose of the paths. These projects are the advanced projects in the
paths. Once you accomplish these projects in your paths you have come to a
level where you’re an effective communicator as you have completed the major
advanced communication projects. Following these specialized projects for all
the paths we have electives that are useful for member to increase their
knowledge.

16
The Electives of level 3 project have some common fundament projects
across all projects. Attempting all this projects you will be confident
speaker. The elective option says we can attend a minimum of 2 projects
and a maximum of all projects. When I saw the project title in the start of
this roll out I felt all the toastmasters in both the traditional the pathways
paths will be competent and confident respectfully. I’m glad to say this is
my favorite level.

Projects
- Deliver Social Speeches
- Using Presentation Software
- Connect with Storytelling
- Creating Effective Visual Aids
- Using Descriptive Language
- Connect with Your Audience
- Make Connections Through Networking
- Focus on the Positive
- Inspire Your Audience
- Prepare for an Interview
- Understanding Vocal Variety
- Effective Body Language
- Active Listening

Project suggestions level 3

There is no such feedback to this level, as there are basic communication
project needed for a person to become a confident speaker.
Toastmasters has to promote such a level before we begin the paths. A
member will be a better communicator after completing such a level in
the pathways. A member can attend such a level at an early stage the
level 2 seems to new to all toastmasters.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF
SOMEONE IS MATURE
OR NOT?
BY TM MADHU

1. Mature people don’t go to Burger King or restaurants and upload the

food that they ordered on social media.
2. Mature people think deeply before taking actions
3. Mature people avoid issues with people and they also forgive easily.
4. Mature people genuinely fall in love and not because of physical
intimacy.
5. Mature people cherish family and loved ones. They build homes and
avoid destruction.
6. Mature people are usually independent and sometimes,
interdependent.
7. Mature people know how to manage their finances and keep secrets.
8. Mature people do not live to oppress or impress because they know
this is a waste of life.
9. Mature people make wise decisions and avoid rash behaviour.
10. Mature people are generally honest people.
11. Mature people are always calm and do not complain.
12. Mature people do not bully, belittle and devalue their friends nor
abuse others.
13. Mature people know when to speak and what to say and they also
know when to keep their mouth shut.
14. Mature people stay away from negative people. They know it is a
waste of time staying around bad energy.
15. And finally, age is not a guarantee for maturity.

5 REASONS WHY
JUNGLE RESORT CAN
BE BEST CORPORATE
OUTGOING
BY TM AJITH

Would you want to switch off your work mode and recharge your
batteries?  Jungle resort can be your stress-buster. Want to know
how? Following are some of the reasons which you should
contemplate

1. Break from work life:

Continuous work pressure makes you physically and mentally tired.
As a result, you will feel like taking a break for a while. When you
explore nature you will completely forget work tension and
therefore it justifies the purpose of taking a break.

2. Getting close to nature makes the mind calm:

A study conducted by psychological experts say that continuous
exposure to greenery will instantaneously make the mind calm.
Exploring the nature and green pastures will help to cope up with
your stress levels. Once your stress levels are down, your
performance at work will increase.

3. Team Building activities:

Team building activities with fellow employees will help you to break
your ice and come out of the comfort zone. A good equation with the
fellow employees gives the sense of unity. The team spirit among
the employees will positively reflect on the work

19
4. Improves productivity at work:
When you are back from your jungle resort, you feel fresh and your
day-to-day productivity in work will improve drastically. A short
break from work will increase your productivity by three times and
hence indirectly contributing for the company.

5. Building Interpersonal skills:

Interpersonal skills are inculcating Leadership, communication and
problem-solving. Day-to-day activities at work immensely demand
all these elements. Forest trekking encourages the above elements.
This not only helps in professional life but also important in shaping
ourselves into a better human being.  The interpersonal skills which
were learnt in forest trekking can be inculcated in handling clients
and your teams working on it.

Opportunities for learning and reformation is just away from arm's

length

Are you ready to grab these and get back to work with your
recharged batteries?

EVERYTHING IS A CHOICE
If we think deeply, isn’t it that all we ever do in our life is just making a ‘choice’? What we’ll
eat today, how much we’ll sleep, where we’ll go, what we’ll think, what we’ll say, what we’ll
do….and what not. Even not making a choice is a choice we make. From the moment we
wake up to the moment we close our eye-lids, we keep making one choice after another.

If making choices is such an integral part of our life, don’t you think we should ask
ourselves, ‘how can I make right choices?‘. Let us ponder over this thought by reviewing
the examples of two ‘gentlemen’.

Some say that Duryodhana (from epic Mahabharat) and Ravana (from epic Ramayana)
were the two of the greatest fools on the planet. But why? Reason: They kept making
wrong choices again and again.

First in the line is Mr. Duryodhana. When Duryodhana was playing unfair to the
Pandavas, Lord Krishna himself came to Duryodhana as a peace-maker. Krishna gave
Duryodhana 3 choices.First, if you think Pandavas to be superior than you, then
surrender unto them. Second, if you think Pandavas to be equal to you, then make a
compromise with them. Third, if you think Pandavas to be inferior to you, then atleast
give five villages to them. Duryodhana was well aware of the prowess of Krishna and

Arjuna. Krishna even showed his ‘Virat-Swaroop’ to Duryodhana in front of whole

assembly. Even some people present in assembly tried to pour wisdom words to
Duryodhana but Duryodhana listened to none. Result: Duryodhana made the wrong
choice of going for the war against the mighty Pandavas, only to shorten his life span.

24
Next in the line is our very own, the king of Lanka, Mr. Ravana. We are well aware of the heinous act
of Ravana of kidnapping wife of none other than Lord Ram. Here, Hanuman came as a peace
messenger to Ravana to bring Ravana’s intelligence back on track. On seeing negative response from
Ravana, Hanumanji burnt the whole Lanka, just to give a sample of power of Lord Ram. Hanumanji
explained to Ravana that if an insignificant monkey like him can burn Lanka like a piece of cake, it
doesn’t require any intelligent person to understand what Lord Ram could do. Even Vibhishana tried
to bring Ravana’s lost intelligence back. But where in the world was Ravana going to listen all this.
Consequence: Ravana made the wrong choice of going against the wishes of Lord Ram and only to
bring his end nearer.

Our life is like a book where each chapter has 365 pages like the number of days in a year and
number of chapters it has, is equal to number of years we live. By now, some chapters of this book
have already being written. But some chapters are still to be written. It is a time to introspect for us
because the opportunity to write upcoming chapters in the best possible way is either ‘now here’ or
‘no-where’.  It’s upon us whether to write the forthcoming chapters in black ink incorporating foul

Written by TM Jatin (VP Education of HSR Toastmasters club!)

language or to decorate them with texts written in beautiful golden ink in the most exquisite poetic
language. The choice is ours.

Have you observed a computer chip, say pentium chip. If you just maintain this computer hardware
without any up-gradation, this will work fine for a long time. But such thing doesn’t work in real life.
Here maintenance of progress is not possible by barely maintaining it but by constant up-gradation.

Today each one of us will have a choice in front of us: whether we’ll choose doing exercise or lying
on the couch, eating healthy food or consuming junk food, reading a book or spending time
watching tv, and so on. Stakes are too high here; let’s better make the right choice.

My Toastmaster journey has been a short one till
now but it has impacted me in a big way! Not being
a person who’s comfortable sharing personal views
and experiences even with the closest of my friends
or family, Toastmasters has provided me a platform
to open up and share my stories in the form of
satire and funny scenarios. Looking forward to more
joy and laughter in my Toastmasters journey from
here onwards!
