Week 4 reflections:

2/11/19

Today, my lessons went okay for the most part. Students were still acting silly and my

co-op was out for the afternoon. It was me and the teacher assistant for the afternoon, so I think

students tried to take some liberties. My students enjoyed my morning lesson. We did a science

experiment about what sugary drinks could do to your teeth. In the afternoon, we did a letter seek

and find activity. I chose this activity because my students are struggling with letter recognition.

I think they really benefitted from this activity, but we still need to work on our letters. I am

reluctant to show it to them on the screen because they might just erase it and not make the

connection. I definitely want to do this activity again with students because they enjoyed it.

Maybe it will help them recognize more letters. I might try mixing uppercase and lowercase

when they get better.

Today, my lessons went well. My supervisor from the university came to observe an

afternoon lesson. I was worried at first because students can be rowdy and unwilling after lunch.

My students did well, however, and we had a good lesson. In the morning, we finished the

experiment and students were able to draw conclusions about the sugary drinks and their teeth.

We even tried to brush the teeth with toothpaste to simulate how it can help keep teeth clean.

Students loved the hands-on nature of the project and everyone wanted to get a turn to brush an

egg.

The afternoon lesson was a bit of a struggle today. I tried to have students do a number

game where they draw a written number and have to fill in a ten frame with that many counters. I

wrote in the numbers in order on the ten frames but I think I confused the students and they

played the game more like bingo where they drew a number and matched it with a counter. I

tried to correct it when I saw it and re-explain the rules, but it didn’t seem to click for them. The

students didn’t complain though and I think they enjoyed the activity as they did it so the overall

lesson went smoothly.

My lessons went well. For my first lesson, we were short on time because there were

group activities in the morning. I was not able to close the lesson the way I wanted. I got the

chance to make up for it in the afternoon because of the longer period allotted for lessons. We

were able to wrap up the morning lesson and continue with the theme to the afternoon lesson.

My students enjoyed the hands on nature of my afternoon lesson. It was a fun one and they

enjoyed using their fine motor skills and their imaginations. The hands on lessons have been the

most successful so far.

2/15/19

I only got to teach one lesson today because we celebrated Valentine’s Day in the

morning. The one lesson went great. We did a roll and cover game with a die in partners. I tried

to intentionally pair the partners so students could help each other with finding the numbers.

They also loved using playdough to cover the numbers in a pretend mouth. I think next time; I

want to try it with higher numbers since students need to work on number recognition past 10.
