EDUCATIONAL SERIES ANNOUNCED
Navigating Life Transitions
Join the Allegany County Caregiver Coalition, Allegany
County Office for the Aging, and Allegany/Western Steuben
Rural Health Network for this fall’s Caregiver Educational
Series, Wednesday Evenings beginning September 29, 2010,
from 5:30-7:30p.m., located at the Whitney Cafe, Belmont, New
York. The six-week series is free and includes dinner, guest
speakers and program materials to help family caregivers in
their role of caring for a loved-one.
“Are you providing unpaid assistance to a spouse, relative,
or friend who is ill, disabled, or needs help with basic activities
of daily living? If so, whether or not you live with the person
you are helping, you are a caregiver, and this educational
series is for you,” explains Helen Evans, Program Manager for
the Allegany/Western Steuben Rural Health Network, Inc.
“Caregivers play a vital role in our community, but often they
can feel alone, confused and frustrated. Navigating Life
Transitions is an opportunity to learn about local resources
that can help caregivers, gain support from professionals and
fellow caregivers, and a chance to relax.”
“Topics have been chosen to help caregivers understand the
full-spectrum of long-term care options; including how to keep
a loved-one at home by making specific modifications to their
homes, understanding the various levels of care such as
homecare, nursing homes, and assisted living options, and how
to financially and emotionally plan for end-of-life care and
services,” continued Kim Toot, Office for the Aging Director.
“Our intention is to help family caregivers with challenging
decisions. An informed decision helps decrease stress and
caregiver burnout.”

NEW VOLUNTEER RESPITE PROGRAM LAUNCHED
IN ALLEGANY COUNTY
Upcoming Respite Training Announced-Volunteers Needed
According to the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New
York, if you don’t know what respite is, you’re not alone. By
definition, respite is a period of rest or relief. But respite care is
disease and other dementias. It provides a break from the
typical care routine - allowing caregivers some down time while
the person with dementia continues to receive care from
qualified individuals and has the opportunity to have special
experiences. The Allegany County Caregiver Coalition,
Allegany County Office for the Aging and the Allegany/Western
Steuben Rural Health Network are teaming up with the
Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York to help bring this
much needed service to Allegany County.
Community members interested in learning more about
sharing their time with those living with Alzheimer’s disease
and other dementias are invited to attend a Free Volunteer
Respite Introductory Dinner Meeting. Date: Wed., November
17, 2010. Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m. Site: Allegany County Office for

riding in a motor vehicle operated by a junior license holder
when not accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian has
been reduced from two to one.
•Elimination of the limited use junior license and the
requirement that a junior permit be held for at least 6 months
before a junior or senior license may be issued.
•The number of supervised driving hours before scheduling
a road test has been increased from 20 to 50 hours, that
includes 15 hours of driving after sunset.

You use calls for
ducks, geese and turkeys,
but as for deer, that’s just
not something you do.
You’d rather track a deer
than try to call it to you.
There are some hunters,
though, who swear by
deer calling and are adept
at it, especially when it
comes to deer rattling.
Deer rattling is
exactly what it sounds like,
the rattle of deer antlers. It
is based on the idea that
bucks that hear rattling will
assume that a fight is
taking place over a doe
and approach. Rattling
works best during the peak
of the rut on grounds with
a high buck-to-doe ratio or
a large number of
dominant bucks.
Before a hunter uses
the rattling technique, they
need to scout for the areas
bucks use regularly. These
are sites where bucks eat,
spar and sleep and where
does eat as well. The
hunter should set up in an
area where they can spot
the deer before it spots
them. Bucks tend to
approach rattling from
downwind, so the hunter
should look for an area
where bucks are less likely
to circle their position.

enlist the help of another
hunter. One hunter can
stand ready downwind
while the other sits in a
tree stand under dense
cover and rattles.
The hunter should
choose a time to start the
rattle early in the morning
when bucks are out and
about and prepare the
area well. Deer in general
feel safer during low light
conditions when fewer
hunters are around. The
hunter should disguise all
unfamiliar scents and set
up some decoys to keep
bucks coming. They may
use authentic racks or
synthetic ones in a neutral
shade that will limit
visibility. Generally, the
larger the rack, the louder
it will be. Designed
specifically for rattling,
many of the synthetic ones
will be easier on the hands
and reduce the risk of
injuries.
The hunter should try
to make their rattling as
realistic as possible. They
should crash and grind the
racks together to simulate
a fight among bucks, make
some aggressive grunts,
sniffs and wheezes, rustle
the leaves and pound the

so the hunter should
resume the rattle every 10
to 15 minutes, using short,
loud sequences, until they
see a buck. As the buck
comes closer, the hunter
should rattle more softly or
use a grunt call to coax it
into range and keep it
there.
If there is no
response, the hunter
should wait half an hour
and try again, only this
time a quarter to half a
mile farther away. Hunters
should not try to rattle the
same site day after day.
Any bucks within the area
may sense that something
is not quite right and
refuse to come. Should the
hunter see a buck, they
will definitely want to
change sites. The chances
of rattling the same buck in
the same site day after
day are slim.
Rattling does not
always work, of course.
Bucks already with a doe
will not come running in
fear of losing that doe,
whereas bucks that are
smaller may not come
running in fear of losing
the battle to a larger buck.
It never hurts to try the
technique, though.
Hunters just might be
successful and have more
than one buck approach.

cooker and turn it on high.
Add onions, carrots,
moose roast, garlic, water
and onion soup mix. Salt
and pepper to taste. Cover
and cook for 4 hours.
Drain juice from meat into
saucepan. Add bouillon
cubes and bring to a boil.
Add cornstarch and stir
until juice turns thick and
clear. Pour juice back into
slow cooker with moose
and cook for another hour.
When moose is done, slice
into thin slices and serve
with gravy and potatoes or
rice.

2/3 c. green pepper, diced
2/3 pkg. taco seasoning
mix
1/6 c. brown sugar
1/6 c. diced green chilies,

Brown ground moose
meat in a skillet with onion
and drain. Return mixture
to skillet and add green
pepper, taco seasoning,
brown sugar, chilies,
vinegar and picante sauce.
Cover and simmer for 1
hour or until thickened.

Hospital’s (OGH) Auxiliary is being commended for their
advocacy activities during 2009.
“Olean General Hospital’s Auxilians deserve to be honored
for their many contributions and hours of service at the
Hospital,” said Suzanne Gaughn, manager of Volunteer Services
at OGH.
Over 97 Auxilians, support the OGH Auxiliary led by Raye
Green, president of the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has been an
Ambassador of Goodwill to patients and visitors at OGH since
1957.

OLEAN GENERAL HOSPITAL BREAKS GROUND
FOR NEW AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER
OLEAN, NY - Olean General Hospital marked the start of an
important new project for the advancement of surgical services in the
community on October 27, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the
hospital'`s ambulatory surgery center located across from the hospital at
500 Main Street.
In June, Olean General Hospital announced plans to build a free-
standing outpatient ambulatory surgery center to enhance patient service
for surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay.
"Because free-standing ambulatory surgery centers have become the
standard of care for outpatient surgery, we want area patients to have
access to this type of surgical facility," said Timothy J. Finan, president
and CEO of Olean General Hospital and Upper Allegheny Health
System, the parent company of Olean General and Bradford Regional
Medical Center.
Olean General Hospital's new 22,000-square-foot ambulatory
surgical structure is expected to open in early 2012 and will include four
operating suites and three endoscopic suites plus, pre-operative and post-
operative recovery areas, waiting rooms, consultation areas, and support
space. The hospital currently performs over 6,000 ambulatory surgical
procedures each year.
"This new ambulatory surgery center will allow patients to walk in,
receive their outpatient surgical procedure, and return home the same
day. The Center will significantly increase efficiency and patient
comfort," Mr. Finan said. "Additionally, and most importantly, we
believe this project will be very helpful in terms of our ability to recruit
new surgeons to the Olean area. During our conversations with potential
surgical recruits there are always inquiries about the availability of an
ambulatory surgical center at the hospital."
The estimated $10.3 million construction project will take
approximately one year to complete and is being funded through a
combination of hospital financing, existing capital and the philanthropic
support of the community. The 2010 OGH Annual Campaign will be
dedicated to supporting this important project.

2010 annual campaign will be successful because our donors have
always stretched to support their community hospital," said Karen Fohl,
president of the Olean General Hospital Foundation and vice president
of Institutional Advancement. "A gift is an investment in the future of
