Army National Guard Spec. JOSEPH A. PAGE has

graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning,
Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received
training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading,
tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first
aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional
training included development of basic combat skills and
battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of
various weapons and weapons defenses available to the
infantry crewman.
He is the son of Sherry Page of Third Street, Roulette, Pa.
Page graduated in 1999 from Port Allegany Junior-Senior
High School, Pa., and received a master’s degree in 2005 from
State University of New York, Geneseo. f

Arnold Palmer, Golf Champion and Prostate Cancer Survivor,
Joins the Effort
(NAPSA)—Cancer of the prostate is the second leading cause of
cancer deaths in men in the United States, and every year, approximately
8,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage.
Prostate cancer is considered to be advanced once it has spread beyond
the prostate region. This year, roughly 32,000 men are projected to die
from the disease in the United States, enough men to fill approximately
p 400 metropolitan buses, including standing passengers.
Men who are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and those
who love them may not be sure where to turn for information to help
them cope with advanced disease. This uncertainty can add to their
emotional burden and cause confusion.

Education & Support Network, has introduced a new, educational
program called My Prostate Cancer Roadmap.
My Prostate Cancer Roadmap

PA CleanWays of McKean County is planning an electronic
recycling event on November 6th, from 10AM to 2PM at the Bradford

the freon.
All other electronics would be accepted free of charge. These items
include computers, printers, scanners, fax machines, radio and telephone
equipment, laptops, laptop batteries, power supplies (UPS) and UPS
batteries, hard drives, computer boards, networking equipment, disk
drives, wire, other misc. electronic equipment.
In order to determine truck space needed, the group is asking
businesses to pre-register at the Penn State Extension Office with a
rough estimate of material. Individual residents would not need to pre-
register. If there are questions about the event you can contact Extension
Educator, Jim Clark, at the Penn State Extension Office or Heather
McKean at the McKean County Conservation District, both offices are

You use calls for
ducks, geese and turkeys,
but as for deer, that’s just
not something you do.
You’d rather track a deer
than try to call it to you.
There are some hunters,
though, who swear by
deer calling and are adept
at it, especially when it
comes to deer rattling.
Deer rattling is exactly
what it sounds like, the
rattle of deer antlers. It is
based on the idea that
bucks that hear rattling will
assume that a fight is
taking place over a doe
and approach. Rattling
works best during the peak
of the rut on grounds with
a high buck-to-doe ratio or
a large number of
dominant bucks.
Before a hunter uses
the rattling technique, they
need to scout for the areas
bucks use regularly. These
are sites where bucks eat,
spar and sleep and where
does eat as well. The
hunter should set up in an
area where they can spot
the deer before it spots
them. Bucks tend to
approach rattling from
downwind, so the hunter
should look for an area
where bucks are less likely
to circle their position.
They may even want to
enlist the help of another
hunter. One hunter can
stand ready downwind
while the other sits in a
tree stand under dense
cover and rattles.
The hunter should
choose a time to start the
rattle early in the morning
when bucks are out and
about and prepare the
area well. Deer in general
feel safer during low light
conditions when fewer
hunters are around. The
hunter should disguise all
unfamiliar scents and set
up some decoys to keep
bucks coming. They may
use authentic racks or
synthetic ones in a neutral
shade that will limit
visibility. Generally, the
larger the rack, the louder
it will be. Designed
specifically for rattling,
many of the synthetic ones
will be easier on the hands
and reduce the risk of
injuries.
The hunter should try
to make their rattling as
realistic as possible. They
should crash and grind the
racks together to simulate
a fight among bucks, make
some aggressive grunts,
sniffs and wheezes, rustle
the leaves and pound the
ground with a stick. After a
few minutes, they should
stop and listen for a buck
to approach. It may take a
while for a buck to appear,
so the hunter should
resume the rattle every 10
to 15 minutes, using short,
loud sequences, until they
see a buck. As the buck
comes closer, the hunter
should rattle more softly or
use a grunt call to coax it
into range and keep it
there.
If there is no response,
the hunter should wait half
an hour and try again, only
this time a quarter to half a
mile farther away. Hunters

"Animal House" Trumps the Oscars
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Nothing wrong with NASCAR can't be
fixed by a race at Martinsville Speedway.
Some people are going to disagree. They're the ones who think every
race should be in some place like Las Vegas. They're the ones who
believed Gillian Zucker, president of Auto Club Speedway, when she
claimed that she couldn't draw a crowd in February because of -- get
this! -- the Academy Awards.
As if there were fans saying, "I'd love to see that race, but I just can't
leave without knowing if 'Hurt Locker' won the Oscar."
Who can give it up for Jimmie Johnson when Dame Judi Dench is on the
tube?
Some of those fans watched the Tums Fast Relief 500 on television --
and probably had a jolly good time making stupid jokes about its title --
and the wonders of Martinsville probably seemed elusive.
Something about television makes race cars look slower. Martinsville
can look like a Homecoming Parade in fast-forward. Specifically, it can
look like the Homecoming Parade in "Animal House," complete with
calls for "ramming speed" and an abundance of profanity among the
participants.
Do not judge Martinsville if you've never been there.
On TV, it also looks a great deal like bumper cars at the county fair.
Up close -- and by that, I mean, in the lower rows of the grandstands,
squinting at cars flashing by and trying to keep dust, grime and oil out of
the eyes -- it looks as if all the cars were constructed by NASA, not
organizations with names like Furniture Row Racing.
It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
At the end, unflappable guys like Jeff Burton are ... flappable. Being
a race driver, Burton sometimes seems embarrassed by the perception
that he has good sense. Maniacs are more the norm in the circus to
which he ran away many years ago. After Burton's teammate, Kevin
Harvick, got mad at him, Burton's first reaction was to defend himself
("There is nothing I did that I regret, and there is nothing I won't do next
week.") and his second was to take mild offense that he acted like
everyone else.
"I drive like that every week," he snapped. "I have this reputation of
being a passive driver, and I drive hard every week. I drove hard this
week, but I didn't drive any harder than I normally do."
Martinsville would be a lot better place to have every race than Vegas,
solely on the basis of the post-race quotes.

Fleas Aren't Always Obvious By Samantha Weaver

scratches and bites at his fur a lot. This started a couple of weeks ago, and your life, but probably not with hail like this: The heaviest recorded
he scratches most of the day. Does he have fleas? I can't see any. - hailstone in the world fell in Bangladesh in 1986; it weighed a

fleas and increase the number of times per week you vacuum (and be sure
to change the vacuum bag frequently too).
If you can't find fleas or their evidence, or he keeps scratching after
treatment, take Charlie to the veterinarian to look for other problems like
allergies, skin disease or a hidden illness.

exposure. Shinseki stepped right up and described his decision-making
process to add the disease, even though the research evidence was
limited/suggestive for exposure -- meaning that it’s not 100 percent
conclusive.

OLEAN GENERAL HOSPITAL BREAKS GROUND
FOR NEW AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER
OLEAN, NY - Olean General Hospital marked the start of an
important new project for the advancement of surgical services in the
community on October 27, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the
hospital'`s ambulatory surgery center located across from the hospital at
500 Main Street.
In June, Olean General Hospital announced plans to build a free-
standing outpatient ambulatory surgery center to enhance patient service
for surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay.
"Because free-standing ambulatory surgery centers have become the
standard of care for outpatient surgery, we want area patients to have
access to this type of surgical facility," said Timothy J. Finan, president
and CEO of Olean General Hospital and Upper Allegheny Health
System, the parent company of Olean General and Bradford Regional
Medical Center.
Olean General Hospital's new 22,000-square-foot ambulatory
surgical structure is expected to open in early 2012 and will include four
operating suites and three endoscopic suites plus, pre-operative and post-
operative recovery areas, waiting rooms, consultation areas, and support
space. The hospital currently performs over 6,000 ambulatory surgical
procedures each year.
"This new ambulatory surgery center will allow patients to walk in,
receive their outpatient surgical procedure, and return home the same
day. The Center will significantly increase efficiency and patient
comfort," Mr. Finan said. "Additionally, and most importantly, we
believe this project will be very helpful in terms of our ability to recruit
new surgeons to the Olean area. During our conversations with potential
surgical recruits there are always inquiries about the availability of an
ambulatory surgical center at the hospital."
The estimated $10.3 million construction project will take
approximately one year to complete and is being funded through a
combination of hospital financing, existing capital and the philanthropic
support of the community. The 2010 OGH Annual Campaign will be
dedicated to supporting this important project.
"Despite turbulent times in the economy, I feel confident that our
2010 annual campaign will be successful because our donors have
always stretched to support their community hospital," said Karen Fohl,
president of the Olean General Hospital Foundation and vice president
of Institutional Advancement. "A gift is an investment in the future of

OLEAN, NY-- Each year, the Healthcare Association of New
York State (HANYS) recognizes auxiliaries that demonstrate a
commitment to participating in advocacy activities on behalf of
their hospitals, their communities, and the state’s health care
system. HANYS recently announced that Olean General
Hospital’s (OGH) Auxiliary is being commended for their
advocacy activities during 2009.
“Olean General Hospital’s Auxilians deserve to be honored
for their many contributions and hours of service at the
Hospital,” said Suzanne Gaughn, manager of Volunteer Services
at OGH.
Over 97 Auxilians, support the OGH Auxiliary led by Raye
Green, president of the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has been an
Ambassador of Goodwill to patients and visitors at OGH since
1957.
Last year, the Auxiliary supported the Hospital’s mission
and goals by conducting the following events and services: The
