PLASTICINE ILLUSTRATION

LESSON #3 - 45 minutes

GRADE 7 ART
Becca Klein - March 7, 2019

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

In this lesson students will learn how to use plasticine to create images on a 2D surface that create a 3D
illusion when photographed. We will go over a side show that shows students step by step instructions to
create their own plasticine image. Students will take the image they chose from children’s books during
the intro class and recreate it using plasticine. They will use colours based off of experimentation with
complimentary colours rather than using the original colours from the illustration.

PROGRAM OF STUDIES CONNECTIONS

1. Composition

Components
Students will develop competence with the
components of image: media, techniques and
design elements.
– experiment with colour effects on
compositions.
– experiment with techniques and media within
complete compositions of two and three
dimensions.

OBJECTIVES

Students will...

1. Understand that 3D materials can be used to create 2D images through creating their own
plasticine image.

1
2. Create an image using plasticine based off an illustration they chose.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Children's Books- Barbara Reid for examples

2. Plasticine
3. Photo copies of illustrations.
4. Cardstock to place plasticine images on.

ASSESSMENT

Steps to check for student understanding

1. Questioning- what colours can you use together? Complimentary? What layer do you start with?
What is the layer directly following that?
2. Assessment on slides presentation.

- Checklist-

Image Contains-

Colour experimentation in your compositions.

Multiple colours that compliment each other.
Evidence of detail through creating texture.
No paper showing through your image.
There are multiple layers in your image.

INTRO

Introduce the flow of the lesson.

ACTIVITY

Slideshow to outline lesson and steps of creating plasticine illustrations with an assessment slide
to leave up during the activity.

2
● I will demonstrate how to warm up the plasticine and how to mold it.

● I will encourage creative problem solving throughout.

● Students can use pencils, toothpicks and other materials as shaping tools as long as they will not
be damaged or are disposable. They must be responsible.
● I will be explicit about cleanliness throughout, their work space should not be a mess.
● Plasticine is a new material and they should not be discouraged by the image not being perfect!
Part of this process is simplifying our illustrations because we are using plasticine.

Students will be asked to come up to get their base layer or sky colour, they should only have one colour
of plasticine at a time.

They need to raise their hand to get each layer checked to make sure they are on the right track because
the formative activity showed that many students just stick images together rather than layering.

When they come to get their next colour after their work has been checked, they need to put away their
leftover plasticine from the last layer.

The plasticine will be sorted by colour in tupperware and controlled by me or another adult.

MODIFICATIONS

I will modify the lesson for logan, he will have plasticine and be asked to create a person, animal or
character. Lucas and Pablo will be asked to use pencil crayons to colour and shade their illustrations.
They will be asked to use complementary colours. I will ask them to draw out their illustrations on a
separate piece of paper or write a funny or ironic caption under their image or title it.

CLEAN-UP

Plasticine Clean - up

- Start cleaning up 10 minutes before the end of class and/or when instructed.
- Put all Plasticine in the appropriate bin. Sorted by colour.
- Put artwork away. (on side ledge)
- Wipe off your hands and work space with a dry cloth or paper towel first
- If there is still plasticine on your hands or work space, use a damp, soapy cloth
- Once you are done cleaning up help out your classmates clean and then sit down, chat quietly,
wait for closure.

3
CONCLUSION

Clean-up and we will discuss and wrap-up

Conclude with any questions students have and any breakthrough moments they had during the activity.
