MDT Meeting Reflection

Like other MDT meetings which I have been to, there was a prepared list of student

names and information about each one that was available to each member of the team. The

meeting was held in the school library which felt rather welcoming in such a large space. It was

a small group and probably about half the size of previous teams I have been a part of. The

principle, a district administrator, two special education teachers, and a speech/language

pathologist were in attendance.

The team went through their list of students and discussed why they were on there.

Often each student was tied directly to members of the team. The reasons for being on the list

were referral, annual review, three year evaluation, initial and any other special cases. They

discussed meeting dates and scheduled them for many of the students. Action items were also

addressed and assigned to a team member. Many to me seemed to fall on the principle.

I feel like they put a lot of consideration into each student and what their needs were.

Their principle is fairly new so he was asking for a lot of advice from the special education

teachers. He made the point of saying that throwing every child into special education is not

the answer. I appreciate this and his understanding of it. I agree with him. For many of the

students discussed, they were in need of more information before making a decision like that.

The principle tried to explain things to me throughout the meeting as well. I appreciate

his concern but it almost seemed I knew more about many of the topics he touched on. I wish

he understood what level I was at and I could demonstrate my competency more.
