DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIT 7.1.1 INTRODUCTION The drying process consists of the removal of moisture from a substance, involving heat transfer and mass transfer phenomena at the same time. Mass transfer occurs when the solid losses moisture and heat transfer occurs when the air transfers heat to the solid, which is used to evaporate the water added to the air as the drying process takes place. The unit developed by EDIBON uses one of the most usual drying methods, It lies in making an air current circulate towards the material to be dried. 7.1.2, DESCRIPTION The “SBAN” bans dryer has been designed for studying fluid mechanisms, surfaces chemistry, solids structures, and substances and energy balance, related to the drying process. Its size is especially appropriate for laboratories, The unit basically includes: © Afan © A pressure sensor Thermal resistance Acontrol system * Bans for the drying process | di bf PRACTICE MANUAL © | Unit Ref.: SE Ref.; SBANC Date: January 2010 | Py: 3/73 The axial-flow fan is located at the entrance of the drying tunnel. It introduces the previously humidified air in the tunnel. The speed of the air can be measured with the pressure sensor. The air is heated and the electrical resistance, which are placed next to the fan, adjust the temperature. There are humidity and temperature probes at both ends of the heating / drying tunnel, Either an hygrometer or a psychometric diagram shall be used in order to measure the humidity. Both probes and hygrometer will only be supplied when the required. The solids which will be submitted to the drying process must be placed on the bans. 7.1.3 AVAILABLE PRACTICES Practice 1: determination of the efficiency of the warm-up resistance practice 2: effect of the warm-up in an installation practice 3: obtaining of drying curved | practice 4: influence on the size of the particle Practice 5: influences on the speed of the air | Practice 6: influences on the temperature of the air Practice 7: application of the psychometric in the drying
