Reflection

After
reviewing
the
recording
there
were
several
things
I
noticed
that
I
did
well,
and
First, something I do really well is breaking down sections of the music and
having students clap or sing so that they can hear the notes before they play it. I
think whenever I hear a wrong note or accidental I do a good job of stopping and
addressing it so students don’t continue to play in the wrong key signature. Lastly,
whenever I give feedback, I make sure it is concise. This is a strength of mine
because the students are able to play more the less I talk.
There were several things I noticed throughout the video that I can continue
to work on. First off, I can work on giving better transitions. When I go through the
warm up I can use a scale or rhythm exercise to transition into the section of music
that I want to work on. In addition, I noticed a lot when I was giving feedback that I
was looking down at the score, which made it harder to hear me. I think when I am
giving feedback to students I need to do a better job of making eye contact so I can
make sure they can hear what I am saying. Something else I’ve noticed is that I can
give more feedback in the warm up because a lot of the tuning and articulation that
happens in the warm up can translate into the music we are working on. I’ve noticed
when I am conducting that I don’t cue a lot and students sometimes get confused
about when to come in, so I believe I can give more assistance. Lastly, I think I can
work more on tuning in the warm up. If we spend more time working on listening
around the ensemble and tuning to each other, it will be easier to address it in the
music.
