SUPERLATIVE
ADJECTIVES
Use
There
are
times
that
we
want
to
highlight
a
quality
in
an
object,
a
person
or
a
city
within
a
group,
that
is,
we
want
to
compare
them
to
the
highest
degree,
and
this
is
what
we
are
going
to
deal
with
in
this
section:
the
superlative
adjectives.
Formation
We
have
two
options:
1. Adding
the
suffix
–est
to
the
adjective:
short
–
the
shortest.
2. Using
the
most
before
the
adjective:
outgoing
–
the
most
outgoing
The
choice
depends
on
the
number
of
syllables
of
the
adjective.
Suffix
–est
We
use
the
suffix
with:
1. one-‐syllable
adjectives*:cold
–
the
coldest;
fine
–
the
finest;
cheap
–
the
cheapest.
2. two-‐syllable
adjectives
ending
in
–y.
Note
that
the
–y
is
changed
into
an
-‐i:
happy
–
the
happiest;
pretty
–
the
prettiest;
shiny
–
the
shiniest.
*Spelling
changes:
There
are
some
one-‐syllable
adjectives
that
suffer
a
spelling
change
when
we
add
the
suffix:
a.
If
the
adjective
ends
in
consonant
–
vowel
–
consonant
(CVC),
the
last
consonant
is
doubled:
hot
–
the
hottest;
thin
–
the
thinnest
b.
If
the
adjective
ends
in
–e,
we
remove
it
(e):
nice
–
the
nicest.
c.
If
the
adjective
ends
in
consonant
–
y,
we
change
it
into
an
–i:
dry
–
the
driest.
The
most
We
use
the
most
with
the
rest
of
the
adjectives
with
two
syllables
and
with
those
who
have
three
or
more:
Intelligent
–
the
most
intelligent;
expensive
–
the
most
expensive;
modest
–
the
most
modest
Irregular
adjectives
There
are
three
adjectives
that
do
not
follow
the
previous
rules,
they
are
good,
bad
and
far:
good
–
the
best
bad
–
the
worst
far
–
the
furthest
/
the
farthest
In
The
superlative
adjective
is
usually
followed
by
in
when
we
specify
the
group:
Susie
is
the
tallest
person
in
the
class.
My
mother
is
the
most
modest
person
in
my
family.
Mount
Everest
is
the
highest
mountain
in
the
world.
