As statistics, analysis and comments presented along this report attempt to show,
the Textile and Clothes Productive Chain is represented by a varied set of productive
links and market niches, dedicated to supply the products and services that are 11

essential to the different economic sectors and layers of our society, transcending
the restrict specter which is usually reserved to it by its most known activity: the
production of Fashion Apparel.
Yes, it is impossible not to notice the ever-present textile articles on the everyday
lives of companies and people. The textile product is not present only on the
clothes that dress the desires and the glamour of consumers of all ages, beliefs
and dreams, but also in the manufacturing of shoes which make them beautiful
and protect them; on purses, suitcases and bags which carry their most private
belongings; on toys that amuse them; on the floor on which they step; on the
towels that dry them; on the sheets that cover them; on the windows that control
the incidence of sunlight; on the sun-blinds that shelter them from the rain; on the
vehicles that transport them; on the drainage of the streets they drive by; on the
protection covers of the buildings under renovation; on the billboards and signs
that tell them which way to go and inform the latest novelties; on the packages
which hold food; on the canvasses that guarantee safe transportation; on the
equipment which save lives in hospitals, in factories and in the fight against fires.
The array of utilizations and applications of incomparable importance to the good
quality of life and the contemporary society is endless.

As estatísticas

Textile Manufacturers Federation) e a OMC - Organização Mundial do Comércio.

US$ 433 milhões em 1999 e US$ 384 milhões em 2000.

In its 6th issue, the "Brasil Têxtil" report aims mainly at communicating broad and detailed
statistical information about the evolution of the textile and made up articles sectors
(spinning, weaving, knitting, finishing, garments, socks and accessories, home products
and technical textile goods), by analyzing their productive structures, economic importance,
global market positioning, etc, thus allowing its readers to examine the transformations
occurred within the 1990-2005 time period in their main productive links.
Over the last 21 years, IEMI has developed exclusive researches with the country's
main textile and made up articles producers on a regular basis. The results are shown in
We would like to inform regular readers of this report that some of the information
shown in previous issues has been changed due to revision of concepts and projections
over the period in question.
At the end of this work, the chapter named "Large Companies of the Segment" lists about
200 of the most important companies in this industry in Brazil where major economic
aspects, main executives, full addresses, main products manufactured and raw materials
used are examined, all of which are grouped according to their main line of business.
IEMI is available for any questions about the statistical data and analyses of the results
as well as for analyzing possible in-depth information shown here.
In the illustration shown below, the structure of the textile productive chain is traditionally
presented and it is possible to see the interaction among supplier segments (equipment,
chemical products, fibers and filaments) and manufacturing producers (yarns, fabrics
and knits) and finished goods (made up textile garments):

The story of the Brazilian textile industry shows that, until the 1980's, there were perio-
ds of growth punctuated by periods of stability or even recession.
From the 1990's on, as the local market was opened to international competition, the
sector had to endeavor to modernize in order to gain competitiveness and thus able to
face competition from imported goods.
More recently, the clothing manufacturing link has been responsible for the economic
and social growth of many emerging countries and, in a very special way, has had a
similar role in Brazil.
Now modern and competitive, the textile and clothing industry in Brazil can be compa-
red to the largest and best world manufacturers. It ranks 8th in textile production and
7th in clothing production.
PROFILE AND DIMENSIONS
The Brazilian textile and clothing industry is one of the most important sectors of the
domestic economy both for job creation and production value.
In monetary figures, the Brazilian textile chain accounted for 4.1% of the Brazilian GNP
48 (totalled US$ 32.9 billion sales in 2005) and 17.2% of the GNP of the transformation
BRASIL TÊXTIL 2006
industry.
The jobs created in the textile chain totalled 1,523 thousand in 2005 or the equivalent
to 1.7% of the economically active population and 17.2% of the total amount of workers
in the transformation industry that year. These figures show that this is a very relevant
sector of the Brazilian economy with a deep social impact.
Between 1990 and 2005, the world consumption of textile fibers increased by 72% and
the international trade of textiles and clothing reached US$ 453 billion in 2005 showing
considerable growth in the period analyzed.
However, starting in the 1980's, the acceleration of the integration of the world markets
(globalization) and the softening of barriers to imports led to the migration of an impor-
tant portion of the production of textile and made up articles from developed countries
to emerging countries in Asia and, more recently, to Eastern Europe, Northern Africa
and the Caribbean.
The graphs and charts below show the evolution of these indicators according to the
information obtained from Fiber Organon, ITMF - International Textile Manufacturers
Federation and the WTO - World Trade Organization.
Brazil is the seventh largest manufacturer of apparel and the eighth largest in textile
production. These rankings place the country among the world's biggest textile markets
and, what is more important, almost the total amount produced is to supply the home
market, a fact that is made possible thanks to the large number of consumers.
As our production is turned to home consumption, one would naturally suppose that, in
terms of international trade, its participation would still be small. Brazil ranks 41st in
world exports and 43rd in world imports, being among the countries that stand out in
external textile trade.

When only the industrial stages of the textile chain (production of natural fibers not
included) is analyzed, we can see that it is divided into 3 large segments with very
distinct scale levels. These include the fiber and chemical filament producers segment,
manufacturing (yarns, woven fabrics and knits) and finished goods (clothing, home
products and other finished goods).
The data shown next indicate that the dimensions of these three segments grow as we
approach the last link of the chain, both in relation to the number of economic agents
as well as the number of jobs created and production or income obtained.
end of the chain consists of a huge number of small and mid-sized labor-intensive
companies.

Until 1988 the textile chain did not have complete statistical data that enabled
performance evaluation except for research work carried out by CEPAL in 1960.
The information available was scarce and did not evaluate the evolution of many of the
sector's segments, but this was changed later by research carried out by IEMI upon
request of the National Council of Textile Industry, later replaced by ABIT - Brazilian
Textile and Apparel Industry Association.
Then since 1990 with the opening of the Brazilian textile market to foreign suppliers,
the great challenge has been the modernization of the machinery aiming at cost reduction
and the improvement of productivity and the quality of products in order to keep the
domestic market level with foreign competitors.
In these first years of the new century, despite the current problems caused by overvalued
rate of the real against the dollar, the great challenge has been to boost exports, especially
Next, the results presented by the various segments that are part of the textile chain
(spinning, weaving, knitting, finishing and made up articles) are examined. 53
In the clothing segment, unlike the textile segment, the quantity of operating producers
has remained stable over the period and this is also true of the last decade, which
shows the near-zero barriers to the entry of new producers in this market.
In opposition to the number of businesses that has remained stable, the number of jobs
created in clothing manufacturing has had a dramatic reduction in the period as a result
of the modernization process earlier discussed.
US$ 3.0 billion were spent on spinning machinery, US$ 1.7 billion on weaving machinery,
US$ 1.7 billion on knit machinery, US$ 1.8 billion on finishing machinery, US$ 2.0
billion on clothing manufacturing machinery and US$ 0.3 billion on felt and non-fabrics
machinery.
In the chart below, we examine the annual amount of investments per segment and the
participation of imported and Brazilian machinery in the total values.

The Southeast region, for concentrating the largest number of consumers and also the
largest distribution network of textile and clothing articles, still has the largest share of the
domestic production, but it has been losing ground to other regions of the country. In
addition to the Southeast region, the North region has also lost participation in the do-
mestic production due to the reduction of the size of the jute sector. All other regions
have increased their participation over the examined period.

In the graph and chart below, data on the evolution of the population, income per
capita evolution, production volumes and consumption of textile products per capita
in Brazil are analyzed.
Textiles goods consumption per capita in 2005 was 9.4 kg/inhabitant while production
was 8.8 kg/inhabitant, which means that part of the consumption needs were supplied
by imported products.
In 2005, the production of textile articles had positive results again with a 1% growth
rate, despite the difficulties faced by most segments of the domestic economy.
In the made up articles segment, when measured in terms of quantity of articles produced,
the evolution in 2005 was also positive with a growth rate of 3.5% in home products,
1.3% in garments, 0.6% in socks and accessories and 0.1% in other manufactured
articles. The overall production of clothing articles rose by 1.1% in 2005 and totalled
10.4 billion articles. In the chapter "statistics" of this report, data about the Brazilian
production are examined in terms of volume of articles.
In the charts below, production volumes (tons), values (US$) and average prices (US$/
kg) per productive segment are shown.
Imports also increased and reached US$ 1.5 billion but the 1995 record was not broken
when foreign purchases reached US$ 2.3 billion. In 2005, imports of fibers/filaments
59
totalled US$ 515 million, textiles US$ 728 million and made up articles US$ 275 million.
In the 'Foreign Trade' item of this report under the chapter 'Statistics', full data on the
Brazilian exports and imports by product are presented in volumes (tons) and values
(US$) for the 1990-2005 period. The main importing and exporting countries,
participation of states and economic blocs in the Brazilian foreign trade of textiles,
besides imports of textile machinery per segment of the chain and Brazil's main suppliers
are also analyzed.
Even after the trade opening, between 1990 and 1994, there was a trade balance surplus
in the textile segment. This situation was reversed in 1995 when this sector had a trade
62 balance deficit of US$ 850 million, and successive deficits of US$ 1.0 billion in 1996,
US$ 531 million in 1997, US$ 810 million in 1998, US$ 433 million in 1999 and US$
BRASIL TÊXTIL 2006
384 million in 2000. Finally, from 2001 on, the trend was reversed again and there was
a trade balance surplus of US$ 73 million that year and growing surpluses in the following
years according to the chart below.
Brazilian exports of textile products are based upon products made from natural fibers,
In the chart below, the foreign trade of textile products and made up articles were
divided into two large distinct groups, products made from natural fibers and products 63
This separation allows us to see that, in the natural fibers segment, Brazil has a balance
of trade surplus in all product lines, while in the chemical fibers segment there is a
deficit in most of the links of this productive chain.
