To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing on behalf of Javier Machuca . I have had the pleasure of having

Javier in my English class for the past 3 years. He has attended Augustus Hawkins
from 08/2015 to 01/2019. Over this time, I have seen Javier excel in many areas
including leadership, academics, peer counseling and advocacy for undocumented
minors. He has maintained a positive and resilient attitude throughout his term at our
underserved urban high school. He is an exemplary student and an incredibly caring,
empathetic, and thoughtful human being.
Javier is a first generation immigrant living in South Central Los Angeles. He
was raised in El Salvador by his mothis and then made the life changing leap to start a
new life with his estranged siblings in the United States. As a teachis in a
“disadvantaged” neighborhood, I can attest to the difficulties He has had to adapt from
his home culture to the jarring realities of South Central Los Angeles. Javier however
has not wilted under the pressures of his new home. He has triumphantly overcome
economic , social, and even language barriers and performed to our highest
standards. He is the definition of resilient. A true rose thriving in the midst of
inhospitable concrete.
Javier is passionate about his education and is well respected by his peers. He
is a great asset to our school and would be a tremendous addition to any university.
Javier participates in leadership, girls’ soccer, and peer counseling. One of Javier’s
strongest assets is his writing ability. He has read and wrote essays, letters, and poems
while in class throughout this year. his work is touching, honest, and well written. He
has shown strong organizational skills both in his writing and with daily class work. He
would consistently kept all of his assignments and always knew what was going on in
class. Javier also has excellent communication skills. Javier can communicate when He
needs help but is also able to solve problems on his own. He has always been
thoughtful and insightful in class. It has been an absolute pleasure to have such an
intelligent and driven young man in my class.

Javier’s character speaks strongly about his goals in life. He is devoted to his family and
has a strong desire to better hisself and those around his. I truly believe that He will
become a great leader if He is allowed the opportunity to reside in this great country of
ours.

It is without hesitation that I recommend Ms. Javier Machuca
