a. This is a tenth grade history class with 30 students in it. Two of them are second language learners, one has attention deficit disorder, and three are gifted. II. Subject/Skill: a. The War of 1812 III. Objective(s) a. After reviewing a collection of texts relating to the War of 1812 in small groups, students will be able to identify 5 key events of the war. b. After discussing their individual findings with the group, students will be able to analyze cause and effect relationships of the events leading up to and during the War of 1812. c. Students will learn to work collaboratively using the Jigsaw II method of cooperative learning. IV. Procedures a. Present brief video introducing the War of 1812 b. Review the outcome of the American Revolution and US/British relations prior to the War of 1812, reintroducing important figures and locations c. Break students up into groups and assign each student a number 1 through 5 d. Explain that each student will be given one of five sections of text to study and teach to their small group e. Allow groups to decide among themselves who gets which section of text, then have them separate to study their section for 10-15 minutes. Students will then regroup, and each student will have 5-10 minutes to present their material to their small group. Members of the group should take notes on each presentation. V. Materials a. Textbook b. Paper c. Note cards d. Pen/pencil e. Computer with which to present video VI. Grouping Structures a. The students will be divided into six groups of five within the classroom. VII. Modifications a. Handouts with the same information as the assigned text will be provided for second language learners in their native language. b. Student with ADD will be placed in a group that is seated away from distraction areas, such as hallway or pencil sharpener. c. The three gifted students will be grouped together in order to challenge each other. VIII. Assessment a. After groups have had time to listen to all five presentations from group members, students will go back to their individual seats. Students will then answer a series of short answer questions relating to the material. After turning it in, the class as a whole will discuss what they learned.
