Importance of port of Antwerp
Antwerp plays a major role for centuries as a port in the world and will continue to do so in the coming years
Key Strengths of the port which make it important are as below
Central location
Antwerp is Europe's most central seaport. Sea-going vessels can transport goods 80 kilometers inland, into the heart of Europe
Big choice of world-wide connections
For many European companies, the Port of Antwerp is the link with other continents, and for many companies in the farthest corners of the world it is the
gateway to Europe
Excellent hinterland connections
All product types can be safely and quickly transported from or to the European hinterland
Modern port
Private companies in the port area continue to invest in the most modern storage areas and machines to load and discharge goods as quickly and
efficiently as possible
High productivity
The Port of Antwerp is renowned for its speed
Sufficient capacity
The Port of Antwerp has plenty of handling capacity.

Indian Port Considered for Learnings Implementation

Cochin Port Trust

17
LOCATION
Cochin, an all weather natural Harbour is located strategically close to the busiest
international sea routes:

(1) Gulf to Singapore and Far East (Distance from Cochin Port -11 Nautical Miles)
(2) Suez to Singapore / Far East (Distance from Cochin Port -74 Nautical Miles)
Amongst all major Indian ports, Cochin is the closest to the International East West
Shipping routes. This geo-strategic location of Cochin gives it a distinct advantage.

MODERATE CLIMATE
The Port is situated on the Willingdon Island which is an artificial Island tucked
inside the Backwaters. The backwaters offer calm and placid channels for ships
throughout the year, even during the Monsoon season.
Cochin lies beyond the cyclone zone and therefore the risk of cyclones is
negligible

CPT - Port Highlights
• The port is governed by the Cochin Port Trust (CPT), a government of India establishment. It was established in 1928
and has completed 90 years of active service.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY
• 24 Hour Pilotage
• 24 hour Cargo Operations
• Real-Time co-ordination of vessel movement through VTMS
• Single Window Transaction
• Moving towards Zero Pre-Berthing Detention Time

SERVICE QUALITY
• The operational areas of the port is certified to ISO 9001:2008 standards.
• The port maintains high security arrangements and its security profile is ISPS compliant.
• The port is maintaining a Tier I Oil spill disaster contingency plan. During the past three years, no oil spill has
occurred in and around the port

19
CPT - Port Highlights
CONNECTIVITY
Cochin port is connected to its hinterland enlarging to the state of Kerala ,South Tamilnadu and South
Karnataka by National Highways NH 47(Kanyakumari-Salem), NH49 (Cochin-Madurai) and NH17(Cochin-
Mumbai) .Indian Railway Network provides seamless connectivity to South and Central India. The National
Waterway NW3 provides connectivity to the South Kerala. The port has an international airport in its proximity.
The network of railways roads, waterways and airways has created good accessibility to the port.

Inland Container Depots (ICD) at Coimbatore and Bangalore connected by Regular Train Service

DEVELOPMENT PATH
• Cochin Port is implementing ERP for enhancing efficiency.
• The port is enhancing capacity by modernizing and enlarging the Mattancherry Wharf
• The port is upgrading its power infrastructure.
• The port is equipping its new multi-purpose berths with modern Bulk/Break Bulk handling Cranes.
• The port is developing India’s first Port Based Special Economic Zone.

20
Terminal Infrastructure
Faster Vessel turn around: The 4 Super Post Panamax
Quay cranes and 2 Mobile Harbor Cranes, both capable
of twin lifts ensure faster loading and discharge from
vessels.

Faster Truck turn around: With 15 RTGCs, 3 Reach

Stackers and automated yard management is resulting in
speedy container delivery.
Easy documentation: ICTT documentation center is has been adequately staffed to ensure faster clearance and
minimum waiting time for trucks. The documentation procedures have been simplified. An eForm13 has been
proposed, to further reduce the work and time at the documentation center.

Theft/pilferage-free operations: Round the clock inside terminal security at strategic locations ensure theft and
pilferage free operation.

State-of-the art work shop: The state-of-the art engineering work shop ensures maximum up-time of the
equipments.

21
Terminal Infrastructure
Terminal Operating System: ICTT uses an in house developed Terminal Operating System ie Zodiac which is
maintained and developed by DPW HO and is widely used in DPW terminals.
•Zodiac container management software is used for capturing real time information of containers getting
discharged, loaded, gated in, and gated out and also shifting to different locations in the yards.
•Zodiac application used for planning also optimizes productivity by managing and maintaining terminal business
transactions and data processing while accurately recording and invoicing all transactions and services.
•Zodiac application automates billings, data exchange and reporting functions while capturing a complete history
of all transactions and work.
•Dynamic reporting capabilities put key information at the terminal managers' fingertips, enabling them to track
performance, improve customer service and increase profitability.
Round the clock terminal operations: The terminal operates 24/7 x 365 days. There are no closed holidays for
the terminal.

Flexible cut off time: Export containers can be gated in 6 hours prior to berthing of the nominated vessel.
Relaxation on case-to-case is allowed on Special Service Request (SSR). This allows last minute shipments to
connect to desired vessel.

SMS tracking: Vessel details and containers can be tracked by sending SMS.

22
Innovation
• Reduction in Diesel Consumption and Carbon Emission in RTG’s
• IT equipment’s like VHF and VMT are connected to the low capacity UPS. During slack time the RTG’s are
switched off, resulting in communication breakdown with RTG’s as the batteries drain out within 10-15
minutes. To avoid this situation the operators don’t switch off the RTG; consuming more fuel and emitting
carbon.
Solution:
• 10 units of 1 KVA UPS were available with Engineering department, after installation of 2.2 KVA UPS for
Engineering equipment’s. These spare 1 KVA UPS’ were used to connect VHF and VMT separately, thereby
enhancing the backup power of both IT equipment’s.
• The project was implemented after meticulous brainstorming sessions, Pilot study using one of the RTGs and
regular discussions at various stages.
• After completion of the project, the backup time of IT equipment's were increased from 15 minutes to 45
minutes resulting in the reduction of engine running time.
• This would ultimately result in cost savings on account of less diesel consumption and also less CO2 emission.
• DP Worlds commitment towards environment and energy has been remarkable over the years; and with the
help of this project we were able to provide better work environment for all our employee’s, save energy and
protect the nearby community through the reduction of Carbon emission
