My Philosophy
What makes the perfect teacher? Is the perfect teacher open-minded, patient, care-free,
communicative, outgoing, and holds high expectations? I think that the perfect teacher is the
combination of all of the listed characteristics. A teacher is someone who listens to each student.
A teacher is someone who can direct and teach a student right from wrong. A teacher listens to
each student and their ideas. A teacher is strong-willed, but understands when things go wrong.
Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. When adults would ask me why I
wanted to be a teacher, I always told them it was because I wanted to see the lightbulb go off
when the students finally got the idea. Back then, I didn’t really understand what that exactly
meant. I have dove deeper into the understanding of “the lightbulb”. The lightbulb that I came to
understand is the moment that each student starts to understand a concept. The reason I chose
teaching is because I know that not every child learns the same, but they will eventually grasp
the concept.
In high school, I was the President of a club called Best Buddies. Best Buddies was a
club where general education students were paired up with special education students to go out
into the community and have fun. For instance, the administration of the group made it possible
to have parties every other week. Every student felt so important at each party. We would have
buddies of the week so students were encouraged to do things with their partners.
When I moved here, there was a great opportunity that arose in the West Ada School
District. I became a substitute in the school district at the age of nineteen. When I turned twenty,
I got a job as a Paraprofessional working with special education students. This has really opened
my eyes in realizing that not every child learns the same way. I have learned not only from my
perspective in school, but also working with students who have disabilities. Each and every day,
My Philosophy 3
I walk into work with a bright smile on my face. I know that each child learns differently from
their peers and that is okay. This is a very important philosophy that I am going to carry on in my
classroom. I also want to be open and welcoming as a teacher. I cannot wait to carry on this
My philosophy is not just words, they have a very strong meaning behind why I want to
become a teacher. When I become a teacher the philosophy, I will take most into consideration is
not only that every child learns differently, but also that each child will have a safe, welcoming
place where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. I want to create a
space where children can feel open to sharing new ideas and expressing their own thoughts. I
want my students to know that they are all unique; they can embrace who they are and share their
In my classroom, I will strive to make every individual feel important. I want my students
to believe in themselves and know that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. I want
my students to understand that no question they have is a stupid question. I want them to feel
safe enough to where they can talk about what they believe. I want my students to feel
understood. I want them to know they can talk to me about anything; homework, tests, personal
As a teacher, I want my students to use cooperative learning so they can learn how to
work together. This helps other students get to see points of views that others may not have
looked closely into. This will help students better understand how to communicate with others.
Will my teaching philosophy ever change? Of course it will. A teaching philosophy can
and will always change throughout a teaching career. I will get new ideas from each student I
have and even teachers that work beside me each day. I know that my teaching philosophy will
always evolve and I cannot wait to see what more I get to add to my teaching path. I will grow
and learn new ideas throughout my life that will open my eyes to so much more in the teaching
