FLY - Capstone Project

Objective
The purpose of this project is to practice the 5 pillars and improve your understanding and
proficiency in them. You will be identifying and then addressing a real
real-world
world problem that is
relevant and worthwhile to you, by working in a team.

The process is more important than the solution to the pr

problem.
oblem. Apply your learning from the
FLY program.

Please see the rubric (attached) to see a description of criteria that will define the quality of
the project you will carry out.

There are no grades!

Assignment
Identify a real-world
world problem that you hav
havee seen or know about. Make sure the issue or
problem is worthy of this Capstone project. The problem should provide an opportunity to you
to actually use and exercise as many of the 5 pillars as possible. See Project Reporting
below to determine if a problem
em is worthwhile and what to focus on when you work on it.

Form a team and together approach this problem. Work towards possible solutions for the
problem, but make sure you approach it using what you have learned in each of the pillars
(and Norm Setting)) in the FLY program. Please see the reporting you will need to do at the
end of your project to get an idea what you should focus on in your efforts.

Think of the problems you discussed in the Socratic Seminars in the Conscientiousness
session. Here are some more examples:

● The lines in the cafeteria/mess are too long during lunch time.
● There is a lot of food wastage in the cafeteria/mess.
● There is a lot of littering and dirt on campus or where I live.
● There is bullying and intimidation on campus.

Guidelines
● Work in teams of no less than 3 and no more than 5. A collaborative team effort will
provide you with the chance to practice all the pillars and will give you a real-world
experience.
● Remember to use the norms established and tools learned during each of the FLY
sessions
● Duration of Project - 8 weeks
● Each team member submits an independent project report at the end of the project.
● Write your report in a language that you are most comfortable with.

Timeline
● By the end of 2 week: You should have identified a problem, used the rubric to verify
that your problem meets the criteria above
● By the end of 4 weeks - You should have analyzed your problem, identified multiple
solutions, identified how you have used or can use some of the pillars.
● By the end of 6 weeks - You should have determined the best among your solutions
and recognized how you used the pillars in your process.
● By the end of 8 weeks - Your report should be complete.

Reporting
At the end of the project, each of you will submit a report (or present it in some other
alternative way) that will help your Facilitator understand your experiences in the project, and
perhaps make you reflect on them yourself.

Please see the Reporting format overleaf.

Capstone Project - Student Report Guidelines
❏ Please answer the following questions.
❏ Each student writes their own report - not one report per team!
❏ Originality and critical analysis in your answers will be valued.
❏ Use a separate page for each answer
❏ Combine all pages, cover sheet, etc. into one document and email it to your Lead
Facilitator.

I. Problem Statement
Describe the specific problem your team worked on. Use no more than 150 words.

Make sure you cover the following in your description of your problem:

1. Clearly and unambiguously define the problem. Define its boundaries, if

appropriate. It should be clear what is included and what is not included in your
problem.
2. Explain its importance. Why is it worthy of your attention?
3. What are the consequences of not solving the problem? And the benefits of
solving it. Be as specific as you can.
4. To the extent possible, quantify the problem (not the solution) - how much, how
long, what cost, etc.

Rate the quality of your problem for this project

❏ Check only one box in each row.
❏ You can copy/paste this table in your report document after you fill it out.

Our problem... Agree Neutral Disagree

..is relevant to us

..is non-trivial*

..has an implementable solution

..requires the use of multiple pillars

*significant, substantial

II. Describe how you addressed the problem
Please use no more than 300 words.

1. Describe in detail how you addressed the problem. Explain the process. If you reached
any kind of conclusion, please describe.
2. Describe what worked well and what didn't in working together as a team. If you used
any norms, please explain how they impacted your team (with examples).
3. Which Pillars did you personally use (to a small or large extent) in this process?

III. Exercising the Pillars

Please answer the following questions for each of the FLY Pillars that you actually used in
your project (in 100 or fewer words for each answer). If you didn’t use a pillar do not submit a
report for it.

Use a separate page for each pillar you are reporting on.

1. Name the pillar.

2. Which aspects or techniques of the Pillar did you use in your project and how (give
examples)?
3. What specific impact did they have on your project? Provide foundation for your
statements.
4. How do you think the project outcome would have changed if you had not used these
aspects or techniques as you did. Why?
5. (Optional) What new technique or approach, if any, related to this pillar did you think of
that you might use in the future?
