Leadership Goals

Effective patient care requires nurses to step up to take on roles of leadership. I recognize

that this can be a daunting task for new graduate nurses, especially when many of my patients

and coworkers will be older than I am. However, I hope to explore with different styles of

leadership to find the one that best suits my personality and what is going to be the most

effective and well received by my coworkers and patients. I hope to take initiative on the floor by

spotting potential issues and working to correct them promptly. I believe that in order to be a

good leader, one must be able to work effectively in a team setting. This requires the ability to

listen and respect opinions, openly communicate, and be willing to collaborate on ideas. I hope

that over time, I am able to work on being more assertive and direct with my coworkers to

portray confidence in my leadership abilities. I want to be able to directly voice concerns along

the chain of command. I also hope to work on my public speaking skills to be able to present

ideas or research to large groups of people. Within the first few months, I hope to join Unit

Council to gain more opportunities to advance these leadership skills.

As a long term goal, I hope to then hold a leadership position in Unit Council to hold

responsibility for various aspects of the unit. After gaining more experience, I would like to be

able to serve as a relieve charge nurse when necessary to effectively manage the unit. This would

include me being able to manage patient assignments, assisting with patients and nurses when

needed, and reviewing safety and quality issues throughout the day. Over time, I hope that my

dedication to the betterment of the unit gains the respect of my coworkers and that my leadership

efforts will be accepted and encouraged.
