Big Idea Statement

The students will be able to identify the main topic and what the text is mostly about. The
students will also be able to identify how supporting details relate back to the main topic.

Essential Question Statement

What is a main idea?

What are supporting details?
How do supporting details help readers understand the main idea of the text?

Modeling the Concept

Write or state the following words on the board: apples, grapes, orange, banana, strawberries.
Ask the students what these items have in common.
Repeat with : football, soccer, baseball, hockey, tennis.
Repeat with: green, yellow, blue, brown, black.

Discuss how each of the items on the list are specific details with one thing in common: the topic
or main idea.

If readers are able to identify the items in these lists, then they are able to identify the main idea
in a text.
Guiding the Practice

Today, you are going to work with your intervention partner to determine the topic, or main
idea of several “brown bags” around the room as well as the supporting details. Here if what you
need to do. Each group will be provided with a packet to record your findings. Once you get to
your bag, you will pull out the items in the bag and record them on your list. After recording
your items on the list, you will work with your partner to determine the main idea of your bag.
Finally, you will let me know how you know this by recording it on the line.

Providing Independent Practice

Pair students in intervention groups.

Each group will start at a different bag.
Each group will rotate to each bag around the room recording the main idea and supporting
details.

Closure/Summary/Review of Learning

The past two days we have learned about the main idea and supporting details. What is the
main idea? What are supporting details? Why is it important to know about this? How is this
information helpful to us as readers and writers?
