The Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference is the international meeting point for all those involved in offshore support.
The 2011 conference, the 5th annual event, attracted over 320 senior industry executives including 60 shipowner and 35
shipyard representatives.
'The Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference is for me a fixed event in our annual planning calendar'

Uniquely the conference brings together all stakeholders – oil majors, shipowners, shipbuilders, financiers,
designers, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, OEMs, Class and industry associations – in order to gather intelligence,
network with other industry leaders, and get practical answers to the key issues impacting the industry today.
To support the development of its events, Riviera engages industry expert panels which act as a sounding board for ideas.
Working closely with the industry in this way has been a key source of the event’s continued growth and success. For details
on the advisory panel click here.
The two day Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference features a mix of commercial and operational sessions
concentrating on the sectors present and the future priorities and unites all of the key industry stakeholders, from all over the
world. Following a successful introduction in 2011, day one will feature “parallel streams” with sessions covering the latest
technologies and innovations in the field and financial and commercial topics.
This year's Annual Offshore Support Journal Awards will be expanded to incorporate two new awards which will recognise achievements
reflecting key OSV industry drivers - the Environmental Award and the Offshore Renewables Award.

14.20 Operational and logistical challenges faced by the OSV market: a shipowner’s perspective
15.20 Q&A
From a focus on the market drivers impacting day rates to the growth of cabotage regimes, this session will provide a vital
insight into the OSV market and where it is going in the next two to three years.
Debate continues on how to finance OSV projects but more prominent in 2012 is not only how to secure capital but how to
control costs and consolidate. This session will look at this renewed business focus and discuss how it is affecting the
market.
This session will look at emerging markets and new regional developments and how as a market we can avoid fragmentation
and ensure regional alignment for optimal OSV operations.
Session three: stream C – exploring the legal, contractual and regulatory landscape for the OSV market
It is clear that there needs to be a renewed focus and understanding surrounding contracts in order to offset risk and liability
throughout OSV projects. This session will establish how as an industry we can achieve this.
Session three: stream D – technical and operational developments in the OSV market
Continual developments to OSVs make for an exciting marketplace. During this session you will gain an insight into some of
the latest developments occurring in the industry today.
Establishing operations in Brazil is not the only challenge; once established, companies need to be able to operate effectively.
This session will provide an ‘eyes-wide open’ critique on establishing operations and effectively maintaining them in this
region.
Have we entered a phase of innovation for innovation’s sake? This session will address controversial issues and debate the
reality of new designs and technology. What is the truth behind it and how is it affecting the financial stability of the
industry?
t is critical that we safeguard our industry from the impact of growing costs whilst maintaining fit-for-purpose vessels. This
session will look at the growing divide between man and machine and consider whether increasingly complex ships are
hindering not only our commercial viability but our safety and security as well.
Increasing costs and complexity have resulted in the OSV market facing more and more operational challenges. This session
will look at what these growing challenges are, how they affect those working within the industry and ultimately how they
affect the ability of the industry as a whole.
Speakers
The sessions are chaired by respected industry figures, selected for their subject specific knowledge and recognised industry
standing. Presentations are generally kept to 20 minutes and the timetable provides for questions and answers to flow

Advisory panel
The Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference advisory panel, chaired by Riviera Maritime Media's Events Director Mike
Porter, has been assembled to develop the 2012 conference to meet the specific needs of the market. The expert panel
comprises leaders across the Offshore industry:
John Shock, Offshore Marine Segment Manager, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems
John Shock is the Offshore Marine Segment Manager for Caterpillar Marine Power Systems, based
in New Orleans. In this role he is responsible for product and marketing strategies for Caterpillar’s
high speed and medium speed engines for the offshore support vessel industry worldwide. He has
more than 30 years’ experience in the diesel engine and marine propulsion industry, and 20 of
those years have been dedicated to the marine business.
Ian Perrott began his career as a boarding clerk and then joined the Royal Navy as a seaman
officer and trained at BRNC Dartmouth before serving on a survey vessel, frigate and assault
carrier. In 1982 he left the Royal Navy and joined Stewart Offshore Services in Greenwich as an
offshore shipbroker. His role than became more focused on OSV charters in the North Sea. He
joined the Maersk Co Ltd in Aberdeen as the Assistant Chartering Manager for their offshore fleet,
before joining Sealion Shipping Ltd as their Chartering Manager. He remained with Sealion until
2009, holding the position of Commercial Director from 2004. He was then invited to join ER
Offshore GmbH in Hamburg as their Managing Director, and he is now based in Hamburg.
Rasmus Stute heads the Offshore Service Vessels department at Germanischer Lloyd’s head office
in Hamburg. In this position he looks after all offshore supply ships, offshore working vessels as
well as wind turbine installation ships and offshore windfarm service vessels. He is involved in the
business development of this segment and supports the regional plan approval centres with
comprehensive technical know-how and broad expertise. In his previous positions he had
assignments in Korea and China and supported local designers and shipyards in design and class
matters. Furthermore, during his nine career at GL he has also been involved in rule development
for various ship types.
After spending 14 years at sea as a deck officer on a variety of vessel types and eventually gaining
his Master Mariner’s certificate, Ian Giddings came ashore to work as a lecturer in marine
operations at Aberdeen College. Here he was involved in both traditional maritime and marine
offshore courses including dynamic positioning. He then moved onto the Nautical Institute as
Education and Training Manager before moving to the International Marine Contractors Association
as a Technical Adviser in 2006. During his career he has also served brief periods as a navigator on
board sail training vessels, as a DPO and as a marine consultant.
Tom Kuhnle, Senior Vice President, Offshore and Oil Services Group, Nordea Bank's Shipping
Tom Kuhnle is senior vice president within the Offshore and Oil Services group of Nordea Bank's
Shipping, and has served in this position since 2004. He has worked with Chistiania Bank/Nordea
Bank for more than 22 years and has held various positions within the shipping and offshore
industries including management positions at Nordea Bank New York and Gothenburg. Prior to this
he worked for Manufacturers Hanover Trust and within the Bergen Bank group. In his current
position Mr Kuhnle works on business development with companies operating OSV and subsea
construction fleets while also being responsible for Nordea Bank's international oil service clients.
David Foxwell has spent 20 years writing about the marine, offshore and shipping industry since
graduating from the University of Southampton with a BA Honours degree in environmental science
and philosophy. During his eight years as editor of Offshore Support Journal, the magazine has
progressed from being published quarterly to bimonthly, grown substantially in size and in range of
coverage, and established itself as the leading magazine serving the OSV market. He has also
played a leading role in instigating the highly successful Annual OSJ Conference and related events
such as the OSJ Conference at Nor-Shipping and the forthcoming European DP Conference.
Mike Porter has probably developed and managed more events than anybody else in the marine
and offshore industries. Previously he spent nine years with Informa PLC, where he was managing
director of Lloyd’s List Events and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. His first job was with Lloyd’s Salvage
Association over 30 years ago, and since then he has worked as a ship designer, surveyor, design
engineer and naval architect. He spent five years with The Royal Institution of Naval Architects as
technical director, where, in 1993, he first became involved in conferences.
Peter Somner is the Technip Diving Manager and was formerly the Asset Technical Manager. He is
also Chairman of the IMCA Marine Committee and has held this role for the past five years. Prior to
this he was Vice Chairman. Mr Somner has held numerous roles within the industry which have
seen exposure to most of the different elements of the business from offshore to project
management. He is now responsible for delivery of the group’s DSVs to projects and continues to
be actively involved in the business of IMCA. This also involved for many years reviewing the
annual DP incidents in the industry.
