Driving questions:

What are the strategies and principles you can use to structure students’ activities so that
students are using appropriate behaviour with technology?

How can you set up your classroom structure for using technology with students? Think of
specific ideas.

Consider:
 Designing engagement
 Being prepared
 Avoiding distractions
 Monitoring
 Plan for tech failure

Important issues to consider when setting classroom for technology use:

-distributing and gathering technology
-monitoring usage
-interacting
-techniques for directing focus
-power issues
-login issues
-storage management

I feel that the most important part of technology integration in the classroom is in lesson
planning. During lesson planning, I will plan for both success and failure in integrating the
tablets into the classroom. Since there is a classroom set of tablets, before using them, I will
test the tablets out myself, possibly asking for help from other colleagues, or ask a group of
students to help me test the tablets before introducing them into the classroom. In addressing
login issues, this will be done beforehand, and if the login issues persist during classroom
instruction, I will ask students to pair up or team up and complete the assignment as a group.
Should technical problems arise, we may result to doing the proposed activity without the
devices. If the problem is only apparent in one device, I will let students know to inform me on
the issue, and I will solve the issue on my own or seek help from the IT department of the
school. Students will be assigned a number to their devices, and will be responsible for
distributing and putting away their own devices, as well as charging them. I will call them up by
groups of numbers to gather and put away their devices. As for monitoring usage, I will set up
an application on the teacher desktop to monitor their usage while in class and outside of class.

It is important to note that I plan to set clear and concise classroom expectations and
consequences with my students before using the technology in the classroom. It is crucial that
students play a role in establishing classroom rules and expectations.
Teaching Strategies:

 have very clear classroom expectations and clear consequences

 students are assigned numbers for the technological devices
 if technology is having problems, let teacher know right away
 using distance as a helper
 a place for storage
 teacherview, classroom view can allow teachers to keep track of students
o both sides are held accountable
 explicit parts of lesson plan to use technology
 asking students to charge their own technology
 keeping students on task, and focused
 instructional time is used with max efficiency
 assigning students to be ‘lab managers’ to supervise and help their peers
 assigning students to help charge the laptops at the end of the day
 convenient and secure place to store and charge devices
o easy to access and to put away
o assigning numbers
 systems for when to use and put away devices
 setting expectations early on, with the students
 establishing digital workflow – using a platform to communicate with your students and
parents/guardians
 empower students to decide on their own tech use
 digital learning should be meaningful
 lessons with and without technology
