CALL FOR PAPERS

Rethinking Theatre, Dramatics and Sustainable Studies (RTDS 2019)

Organizer: Amity School of Languages, Amity University Rajasthan, Jaipur

3-4 October 2019

“The stage is a magic circle where only the most real things happen, a neutral territory outside the
jurisdiction of Fate where stars may be crossed with impunity. A truer and more real place does not exist
in all the universe.”
― P.S. Baber, Cassie Draws the Universe

In modern day parlance, we often use the terms Drama, Play and Theatre interchangeably without
adhering to their characteristics they manifest in different domains. All these are aesthetic art forms but
their representations and productions make them different from each other. In Drama, Actors take on
different roles and act out on author’s voice (mostly) and its ‘written’ in either prose or poetry. Theatre on
the other hand, refers to ‘action on stage’ in the form of mime, dance, and opera. The origin of dramatic
performance in Indian subcontinent can be traced back to as early as 200 BCE. Kālidāsa in the 4th-5th
century was arguably one of ancient India's greatest Sanskrit dramatists. Throughout history, drama has
performed and represented political, religious, national, ethnic, class-related, gendered, and individual
concepts of identity across cultures. Reference can be made of ancient Greek theatre, Shakespeare and
Elizabethan theatre by Corneille, Racine, Molière, the Italian commedia dell'arte and its transformations
into eighteenth-century drama, the German Enlightenment - Lessing, Schiller, Goethe, and Lenz, French
and English romanticism by Kleist, Byron, Shelley, Hugo, de Vigny, Musset, at the turn of the century -
Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, Stanislavski and in the twentieth century - Craig, Meyerhold, Artaud,
O'Neill, Pirandello, Brecht, Beckett, M¿¿ller and others.

The initial motives to use dramatics were didactic, that is, to give deep understanding about the
truth of the religion to its believer that finally evolved to the regular drama forms which are known till
today. Despite frequent shifts in the field of Drama, the significance of ‘Stage’ did not diminish. Without
stage, the performance of the plays written by eminent playwrights like William Shakespeare would be a
distant dream. Writing for the stage demands an understanding of two fundamentals: the essence of drama
and the nature of theatre.

This RTDC2019 conference is intended to be an exchange of knowledge, research innovations,

and practical methods, examining the future applications and implications of performance work. As we all
know that drama can support language learning at the university level and can also support learners in
acquiring professional competences. So the conference also intends to explore forms of drama in language
teaching, its benefits making learning holistic and memorable, improving learners’ social and personal
competences. So the two-day long conference will have significant keynote addresses, paper
presentations, Round table discussions as well as theatre workshops and presentation of skits.
