1. General
This user manual describes details of testing GE Multilin 489 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.
A CMC test set with six current outputs is required to use the full functionality of this PTT.
3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a GE Multilin 489 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. These connections are the default settings in the
Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
Distance (ANSI 21)
Volt per hertz (ANSI 24)
Undervoltage (ANSI 27)
Inadvertent generator energization (ANSI 50/27)
Reverse power/low forward power (ANSI 32)
Loss of excitation (impedance) (ANSI 40)
Loss of field (reactive power) (ANSI 40Q)
Negative sequence overcurrent (ANSI 46)
Voltage phase reversal (ANSI 47)
Stator thermal (thermal model) (ANSI 49)
High set phase overcurrent (ANSI 50)
Offline overcurrent (ANSI 50)
Ground overcurrent (ANSI 50/51GN)
Voltage restrained phase overcurrent (ANSI 51V)
Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.
Note: The trip contact and/or alarm contact must be assigned to test the protection functions. If the
protection function is enabled as latched the alarm/trip signal must be reset before every fault simulation.
5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the GE Multilin 489 XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the GE
EnerVista 489 Setup software.
The Filter for GE Enervista.csv Settings can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.
Device Definition block of the Relay Parameter Section has to be filled in manually.
General information about the converter structure can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual. In this
chapter the specifics of the Test Information and Relay Information block in the Additional Information
section of the converter are described.
The Relay Information block contains Phase CT Secondary parameter, which has to be entered manually
depend on the ordering.
The Test Tolerance block contains an additional test tolerance to calculate the start and end value for trip
and pickup tests using the Ramping or Pulse Ramping test module. The Thermal Overload block
contains parameter for setting the test voltage for voltage dependent overload curve. The Voltage
Protection block contains parameters for setting the test voltage of the fault state in undervoltage,
overvoltage and neutral overvoltage trip time tests. If e.g. an inverse time curve is selected for these
elements, the test voltages can be de-/increased and thus the trip and test time.
In this chapter the specific protection tests, which are not covered by the OMICRON PTT user manual,
are described.
Example:
Fault type
o A-B-C for phase elements
o A-N for ground elements
o I2 for negative sequence elements
Test inverse time elements with 3 test points on the inverse curve
Test definite time/instantaneous elements with 2 test points at 0.9 and 1.1 x pickup
