CHAPTER 1

1. INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to

create profiles, upload photos and video, send message and keep in touch with friends, family and

colleagues (Rouse, 2014). As netizens, we usually use Facebook for some personal reasons but

sometimes they didn't notice that they tend to use it most of the time. According to statistics, the

minimum average time in using Facebook is 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Spending too much time on “social media” sites like Facebook is making people more than

just miserable. It may also be making them depressed. (Brett Arends)

In this research, I will investigate on what are the deeper effects of Facebook on selected

Grade 12 Senior High School Students of Maputi Senior High School "As human beings, we

evolved to care about our reputation. In today's world, one way we are able to manage our

reputation is by using social media websites like Facebook." (Whiteman, 2013)

B. Statement of the problem

This study is centered on the identification of the common effects of Facebook. This

problem is linked to the following sub problems:

1. What is Facebook?

3. When can we say that the person is an active Facebook user?

4. What are the purposes of Facebook?

5. How does Facebook affect the students?

6. What are the positive effects of Facebook?

7. What are the negative effects of Facebook?

8. What Laws are implemented regarding Facebook?

C. Objectives of the study

1.3.1 General objectives

The main objective of the study is to identify the effects of Facebook on the selected

Grade 12 students of Maputi Senior High School.

1.3.2. Specific objectives

1. To know what are purposes of Facebook.

2. To know what are negative effects of Facebook.
3. To know how Facebook affect the students in MSHS.

1.4. Significance of the study

It seems it could be a big lost without Facebook especially to the millennial. And I want

to know more about the effects of Facebook in Senior High School Learners and on how they

consider Facebook this time and how Facebook give the challenges in their life now. This study

aims to answer if Facebook can damage a student’s future.

1.5. Scope and limitations of the study

This study tend to know the effects of Facebook in the academic performances of the

students. This is limited only for the Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS),

Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), Technical Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) of

Maputi Senior High School. On this research paper, the respondent are required to answer how

they are connected to Facebook and how Facebook affect their social lives.
CHAPTER 11

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review studies that related to the study about the
effects offacebook. This research focused to analyzing the effect of facebook on
students performance.According to comprehensive literature review by Ellison (2007), the role
offacebook in higher education is attributed to the creation of virtual classes. The review
hasanalysed massive research database around the world to make this review comprehensive inits
coverage for almost all aspects of an endeavor to give an explanation for the diverse roles of
facebook in higher education classes.

Facebook being social networking sites provides an online platform on which students
create profiles, promote and share information and contents and have interactions with
contacts both known and unknown (Kirkpatrick, 2010). Facebook have expanded recently,
whichhave led to its use by people of all generations extentsively. Several types of
researchexamine this online platform attraction and its persuasive character and the reason that
cause people of every kind and different ages to this communicate. Other studies show that
facebook extention presence can have effects that are harmful to academic performance. Ifstudents
spend most of their for time on facebook, their academic performance will reduceand thus their
grades (Kirkpatrick, 2010). A day sudents should spend at least 30-35 minutessurfing facebook.
They actually surf for only three to four minutes on each visit to beupdated, but they severally visit
facebook a day. Others spend eight on the website. Although students consider facebook is
distracting and consuming a lot of time, they note that they can’t stop visiting the website because
they prefer it and use it to contact family members and friends, whether or not encounter them
each day, Tess (2013) argues that there is a variety of correlations that exists in the literature. Other
studies though find a significant negative correlation between a student’s performance and use of
facebook while others fine no correlations or weak correlations. Only a few studies come up with
positive correlationsthough not with high-level significance. Interestingly, the negative
correlations for thefacebook usage and poor academic performance have been associated with
personality traits.

The advancement in technology and communication leads to a considerable improvement

in social networking such as Facebook and MySpace, used to keep in touch or share information
with other individuals. By giving people the control over whole site, we're making the world more
transparent (Zuckerberg, 2007). Making the world get connected is the ultimate goal behind
Facebook. Facebook is an online directory that connects people through social networks in
universities (Zuckerberg, 2005). Facebook was launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin
Moskovitz and Chris Hughes to help university students in purpose of identifying students who
are residing in other residences. One month later, it was expanded by Mark and friends to any
Harvard university students. Later, Facebook extended to all high schools local area networks, and
then eventually expanded to internet users all around the world. In 2008 Facebook reached 100
million active users, half of them are spending more than 20 minutes in Facebook site per day
(Facebook, 2008). Figure 2 shows the rapid As like most of other social networking sites, Facebook
is a single-page application(SPA) offers a well-organized web page where users’ can store their
personal info and make connections with same type of users. The disclosure of friends, not only
each user view other’s personal profile but also their whole networks. This functionality allows
users’ to traverse from friends profile to anywhere, so that individual’s social network grows
rapidly across the world (Walther et al., 2008).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method to be used, the setting of the study, the respondents of the
study, the research intrument, and data gathering procedure to be used for the research.

Research Method Used

This study employs the “Descriptive Survey Research Design” in gathering the data and
information. Using survey questionnaires to selected individuals and method of comparison and
contrast to sort out, assess and site out relevant information needed for this research.

Setting of the Study

The Senior High School students of Maputi Senior High School is the setting of the study.
It has two year levels and three strands (Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Technological-
Vocational Livelihood(TVL), and Accountancy and Business Management (ABM)).

Respondents of the Study

This research utilizes the twenty (20) students of Senior High School of Maputi. There
were ten (10) survey questionnaires that were handed to the two gender types, the male and the
female. Ten (10) male respondents and ten (10) female respondents answered the survey
questionnaires.

All the detailed data and information from the survey questionnaires were collectively
gathered from the student respondents.
Research Instrument

The instruments used in the study are researcher-made questionnares. The questionnaires
will be designed in a way, that it shall meet the main objective of the study which is the effects of
Facebook in Maputi Senior High School of the selected students to be tallied and assessed
accordingly.

Data Gathering Procedure

In this quantitative & qualitative study, the data were gathere descriptively
based on the observation, interview and survey. The data were further gather from tabulations of
the frequency and percentage distribution of respondents’ responses per statement from the survey
questionnaire.

Based on the results in my research that I conducted in MSHS, it is more likely that many

girls are being affected in their lifestyle because of Facebook, 156 respondents prefer to interact

with people on social networking sites rather than meeting them in personal, they often ignored

their responsibility as a student because of Facebook and they spend more time on social

networking sites. They use of these sites is most likely getting in the way of their real life and they

may even be using them as a substitute for getting out and making friends, or nurturing the

friendships that you already have. Some respondents says sometimes (79), rarely (31), and never

(34). While the boys mostly says never, a total of 98 respondents and the total of other choices are

likely the same. Often had a total of 92, sometimes (80) and rarely (78). They probably use social

networking sites to extend their relationships with family and friends but recognize that keeping

up with these sites are less important than strengthening the relationships that exist outside of the

Internet. They’re likely very choosy about who you are friends with on social networking sites and

realize the dangers of allowing strangers to view your personal information.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

Therefore I conclude that Social Media has disadvantage and advantage to us as a student

such as it helps student to have access to basic information as quick as possible. By the use of Social

Media we can communicate with other people and use it to gain more information through it if we

don’t abuse on using social media or use it in a positive it can help us student and youth just like us

to get more knowledge that we can use to improve our academic in school but then too much is not

good, there are also many disadvantages of social media as a student such as not listening in class

because their busy on chatting and reading stories online. They are wasting their time on chatting

with friends even if it’s not important instead of reading their books and practicing of what they

have learn in school. It also causes distraction to many students stick to their gadgets without

concentrating on their study. Students must not be carried away by the social media because it will

affect their academic performance in school that may result in fail grades or low grades .When the

use of social media is being rapidly rising there is no surprise that social media have affected the

way people live and socialize with other people instead on talking verbally in person they are using

social media through chat online.

Social media has created many social problems in the society in these modern days, many

students prefer to communicate online rather than having real time conversation, and this leads to

students becoming introvert. It also affect health problems of young individual such as the Bad

Posture, Eye Strain, Physical and Mental Stress. Too much use of Social media technology tools by

the students can harm us and must be a limit of using social media.
Social media also affect the lifestyle, behavior, academic performance and grades of the

students. But it depends in you on how you are going to control yourself in using social media

networking sites such as Facebook, Youtube, Wattpad, Twitter and etc. that may lead to affect you.

Students pursue on excellent academic performance and adequate Knowledge that will help them in

the future.
