Medicare Reflection

As we age, the likelihood of developing a variety of consequential health conditions increases.

Health conditions that result in a physical or mental disability can lead to participation restrictions in the
home, work or school environment, and in community life. Being unable to participate in the enjoyable
and desirable aspects of life can lead to depression, anger, and sadness that not only affects the
individual, but also close friends and family.

Medicare is a federally funded program that provides health insurance for the elderly
population as well as those with certain disabilities. Having access to Medicare can be beneficial in many
ways. Medicare provides financial assistance to those who meet the requirements and are in need of
services to improve quality of life. Most people over the age of 65 have entered retirement years and
are receiving a decreased income. This lower income can have a negative impact on an individual’s life
when one encounters a physical or mental disability that requires medical care. It is vital that those in
need of care receive the necessary services to allow them to continue to be self-sufficient and
participate in activities of daily living. With the help of Medicare, the elderly population can have the
ability to pay for necessary prescription medications, assistive devices, glasses, hearing aids, physical
therapy appointments, and so much more.

Those who encounter financial problems often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety;
especially those who also encounter a debilitating health condition. It is unfortunate to witness an
individual suffer from a disease, illness, or condition that could easily be managed if they had the funds
to do so. When one becomes unable to take part in activities that are considered important, it may
result in drastic effects to the rest of that individual’s life. These changes can alter someone’s outlook on
life entirely and change the way they perceive themselves, and the world around them. For example,
when someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he or she may feel uncomfortable going out to
eat with friends and family because they have trouble keeping food on the utensils or because they
move much slower than others. This may lead to unnecessary isolation because of possible
embarrassment or depression. However, Medicare part B covers DME which includes weighted utensils
to assist in eating and a walker to assist in ambulation. Having access to this type of equipment allows
people with disabilities to continue to participate in desired activities for as long as possible.

As mentioned before, having a physical or mental disability such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, a

spinal cord injury, or even declining eye sight can have a profound impact on one’s quality of life.
Receiving financial aid to manage a health condition, can provide just enough assistance to prevent
individuals from experiencing any unnecessary participation restrictions. Although there can be many
challenges when faced with a physical or mental condition, Medicare attempts to decrease the financial
burden many encounter with any form of disability.
