Application of Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA)

A dynamic vibration absorber is a tuned spring-mass system which reduces or eliminates the
vibration of a harmonically excited system by shifting the motion or vibration. It is widely
used in real life to control the structural vibration and noise radiation owing to their
simplicity, effectiveness, and inherent stability characteristics. The examples of application of
DVA in real life included:

For the absorption of the pipeline vibrations at the often existing neighbouring resonant
frequencies on rotation-symmetric cross-sections, DVA has a significant results on pipeline
vibrations.

Figure shows the tuned vibration absorber mounted on the critical section of the pipeline. The absorber was
designed so that vibrations in both horizontal planes are absorbed.

Besides, DVA is often affixed to the rotating machine such as motors and pumps which often vibrate
vigorously due to the rotating unbalances to tune the oscillation by counteracting the force from the rotating
unbalance.

DVA is also used to reduce the vibration of bridges platform that are excited by the flow of traffic or
earthquakes that may sometimes show large transversal vibrations of the roadway which can result in bridge
collapsing.

Figure shows tuned mass dampers beneath the bridge platform.

DVA is used in transmission lines, cables, power lines, transmission lines and lampposts to
protect slender structures from wind-induced vibrations. The “Stockbridge” type vibration
damper is commonly used to control vibration of overhead conductors and OPGW. The
vibration damper has a length of steel messenger cable. Two metallic weights are attached to
the ends of the messenger cable.

DVA is used in PCB as well. Vibration occurs during the functioning of the component and
the device might undergo some short-lived physical duress in the field, like being dropped.
Therefore, PCB is equipped with DVA in the device to be resilient enough to be able to
endure these situations.

DVA reduces the vibration of the piecewise linear beam system. It’s called Piecewise linear
because its stiffness is different for positive and negative deflection, which results in two
linear regimes.

The concept of DVA is used in satellite as well. Solar arrays are attached to the satellite in
folded position and suffer from intensive vibration and to prevent the panel ends striking each
other.
