COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Spanish II, students will review content from their previous year of instruction as well as continue to develop listening,
reading, speaking, and writing skills in an integrated way by performing various life functions and tasks. More complex
grammatical and syntactical structures are introduced at this level as students acquire language proficiency at a Novice-
Mid/High level (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, 1999) and should be able to assimilate additional vocabulary, steps, tasks and
concepts. While listening and speaking skills are the primary focus, students will also develop reading and writing skills through
extensive study and practice appropriate for level II language performance based objectives according to Hillsborough County
policy and Florida Standards. Writing and speaking skills will be subject to performance based testing and/or an end of course
test as well as the use of evaluation by rubric scoring. Hispanic culture is an integral aspect of the program and will be included
in each unit. The major means of communication between students and instructors will be in Spanish.

Make-Up work: It is your responsibility to request a make-up appointment as soon as you return to class if needed.
You can e-mail me while absent or come before or after school as soon you are back. Please check the absent folder
located at the T.V cart. Remember what day you were absent by date, check the folder and retrieve your
work. Make-Up quizzes, tests, PBA’s and class work will only be done by appointment. Please sign up on
the Make-Up work calendar. The calendar is located in bulletin board in front of the room. If you sign up for
a make-up/tutoring appointment, it is your responsibility to show up at the appointed time. You have 3 days to
make up quizzes, tests, and homework for each day of an excused absence as per HCPS policy.

Honor code and copping: Copying of any sort is not permitted. This includes homework, classroom
worksheets/activities, oral and written assignments. Digital aids, internet access or any other item that will assist
the students at answering questions, are not permitted during any assessment, or when the teacher deems fit.

Late work: Not accepted unless there has been a previous contact with the teacher about absence, illness, etc.
(see make-up policy for follow up). All late work will have a 10% deduction of the grade attained for each late
day.

Homework: You will be assigned homework every day in this class. It is important that you practice and reinforce
concepts that we have covered outside class. Homework and class work is checked for accuracy and completion it
is your responsibility to correct your answers when necessary. The recommended study time for this class is 10 to
20 minutes on a daily basis.

Tests and Quizzes: Tests and quizzes will be announced at the beginning of each chapter. Tests are summative
examinations and/or contain listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and cultural components. Quizzes
are usually not as extensive though they may contain several of the 4 major components previously mentioned. There will be
a comprehensive final exam at the end of each semester. The final exam in the Fall and Spring term is a required common
assessment in all Hillsborough county schools which is similar to an end of course test.

Projects: Projects will be assigned during the course of the year. They are as important as a test. They will include in most cases
research, writing, and graphic and oral presentations. Students are required to start working from the day that the project is given
in order to avoid last minute problems. Students might have some time in class to work, but it is expected that they do most of the
work outside the classroom.

PBAs (Performance Based Assessment): Performance based assessments are a major component of the class. They evaluate the
speaking and writing abilities of a student in the target language. Students will complete a minimum of four PBAs per
semester.

Notebook: Keeping an organized notebook for the class is highly recommended. Every assignment, handout, or written
document related to the class has to be in a binder. It is very important that you keep your notebook organized. It is
recommended you separate your work within four different sections: 1) Warm up activities, class notes and classwork
activities 2) Vocabulary-Quick reference sheets, study guides 3) Homework 4) Returned Work.

Participation: You will receive a participation log. It is the student responsibility to keep up with this log in a timely and
honest manner. Your participation in Spanish is extremely important and related to your success in this class. Your daily oral
participation will improve your speaking skills which in return will impact positively your overall grade and performance. I
encourage you to come to class every day and participate positively. It will make your learning process more manageable,
and you will see the results you want faster! (Log form and Participation log instructions will be given latter)

Use of the Restroom/lockers: I can’t teach you if you are not in the classroom. I need you in the classroom; permission
to go to the bathroom/locker will NOT be given. You must use it before coming to class during your six minutes’ break.
Please plan accordingly. You have 3 emergency passes to use during the semester. Please use them wisely. Students may
not leave the room 10 minutes before or after the bell rings.

Electronic Devices: The use or charging of any electronic devices such as phones, IPods, Mp3 players, tablets, IPads, etc.
is not permitted during class time. The use of electronic devices can be permitted only by the teacher ahead of its use and
only for instructional or organizational purposes.

dismisses you.

Expectations:
1. Positivity: Save the drama for the lama! – I expect you to come to class leaving all negativity behind.

so.
3. Politeness: I expect you to treat all human beings in our class with elite respect and adoration. Listen attentively and
leave all judgments outside.
4. Preparedness: I expect you to be prepared with materials, homework, dressed well, have eaten breakfast or a good
lunch, willing to give your time, effort and dedication to our class, your work, and invest in your future.
5. Speak Spanish! I expect you to speak as much Spanish as possible when asked to do so in class. Leave your
complaints behind and open your mind to a new culture, way of thinking, and way of seeing the world you live in.
Try it and see!

Final Exam

Learning a language is like building a house. You cannot afford to leave out any bricks, and you
cannot build up unless you have a strong foundation. If you fall behind in Spanish class, it will be
EXTREMELY difficult to catch up. Pay attention in class, always feel free to ask for help, review and study
every night, and you will have a great time learning Español with success!

Keep this syllabus in your Spanish binder at all times!

¡Buena Suerte!
