MIMO Transmission Modes
Transmission Modes: Downlink Release 9
Networks compliant with 3GPP specs on LTE Release 8 and 9 support eight different modes of MIMO Downlink
transmissions. Only in LTE Release 10 the uplink direction receives the MIMO technology on its transmissions.
Each transmission mode has its own application, presenting “pros” and “cons” which need to be understood to
identify when they should be applied.
5
Transmission Modes: Spatial Multiplexing
LTE LTE
User throughput Cell capacity
Transmission Modes 3 and 4 both apply MIMO with Spatial Multiplexing, which means, parallel (up to 4 in LTE Rel. 9) data
pipes carrying different information from the eNodeB to the UE.
These modes also apply Single User MIMO, which means, all the pipes are delivered to a single user. The end result of
Single User MIMO with Spatial Multiplexing is: throughput increase.
The difference between the TM3 and TM4 will be presented next.
6
Transmission Modes: TM3 and TM4
LTE
7
Transmission Modes: TM3 and TM4
Transmission Mode 3 Disadvantages: the eNodeB may not select the most
adequate Precoding Matrix which can reduce the UE decoding
capabilities, impacting the Downlink throughput.

LTE568 DL adaptive closed loop MIMO (4x2)
The LTE568 DL adaptive closed loop MIMO (4x2) introduces significant changes in the Downlink MIMO
switching algorithm.
Official documents says the Fast TM Switching can only be used with MIMO 4x2, but, RANPAR states
differently, being possible to apply it to MIMO 2x2 as well.
Once LTE568 is activated the ThU/ThD parameters from Dynamic Switching are not considered anymore
leading the eNodeB to no longer override the UE feedback information (PMI/RI) and stopping the RI
averaging/filtering procedures.

Fast Closed Loop to be deployed network-wide where CL is active
Combining the results from Step 3 deployment it is possible to conclude:
Higher • The Dynamic Switching algorithm (Step 2) does not correctly switch
Throughput between Transmission Diversity (TM2) and Closed Loop (TM4), impacting
the Downlink performance.
• With Step 3 the CL utilization was reduced and still a higher throughput was

Conclusion and Recommendation
CONCLUSIONS
• The eNodeB Dynamic Switching (Step1/2) scheduler algorithm imposes suboptimal performance to
Downlink MIMO operation.
• The Step 2 with the optimized thresholds failed to improve the Downlink performance with Dynamic
Switching.
• The eNodeB Fast Switching (Step3) scheduler algorithm showed better performance than Dynamic
Switching.
• The Fast Switching perform the scheduling truly based on the UE feedback
• The Step 3 showed better Downlink performance even with reduced Two Codewords utilization.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Deploy MIMO Closed MIMO (TM4) with Fast Switching (actFastMimoSwitch=1) as baseline
• Fallback to TM3 here degradation is seen after TM4 deployment
• Parameters displayed in the next slide
