SIZING OF BOREHOLE PUMP

Note: The pump must be able to deliver water to the tank at the designed pressure and flow. It should
be positioned in the plain casing above the main aquifer.

From the borehole report we note that:

Static water level , SWL=121.04m

Pumping water level, PWL=124.22m

Borehole yield QY =176.67 l/min=10.6m3/hr

Distance to tank from borehole=20m

Borehole depth=265m

Casing size=6”

Calculation

Depth of pump intake=230m

Design yield QD =70% QY=0.7*10.6=7.42 m3/hr

Total head HT = Static head HS +Friction head Hf + Residual Head Hr

From the Grundfos pump datasheet, the pump model with flows close to what we need is SP8A. To
select the specific make we calculate the frictional loss/head

The outlet diameter for SP8A is 2” therefore your pipe size is 2”.

From friction loss table considering 2” PVC CLASS D pipe and a flow of 7 m 3/hr we experience a loss of
1.6m for every 100m

Running distance =250m

Frictional loss(pipe only ignoring bends and fittings)=250/100*1.6=4m

Static head=PWL=124.22m(incase tank is raised static head=PWL+Elevation

Residual head=5m(estimated by the designer to cater for losses at bends if not determined earlier and
pressure to deliver water inside the tank)

Total Head=124.22+5+4=133.22m

Duty point=7.42 m3/hr @133m

From the graph we select Grundfos SP 8A-30 C/W 5.5 KW 3 PHASE MOTOR
