Do Now

We hear the term “nativism” in the United States everyday in politics and from our president Donald
Trump, we also see it directed towards immigrants when ICE takes them back to their “native” country, and we
see it a Trump Rallies. I do not believe nativism is new, I believe this has been occuring as long as society has
been established, people who are born in the country have always believed that they are better than others,
because they were born in this land, and now nativism has been more talked about more because of our
current president, whos brought it to light.

Read/Paraphrase Evidence

1. This image is targeting Chinese immigrants, and this image shows how Chinese people were perceived
as dirty, because they can eat/clear out rodents and insects, for little amount of money. The message
this image sends out about Chinese people is that they are basically animals.
2. This image is targeting Japanese immigrants, and this image says how Japanese people are unwanted
because they aren't the same ethnicity as “True Americans”. The message being sent about Japanese
people is that they will never be wanted or needed in America, because they'll never compare to “True
Americans”.
3. This image is targeting non English speaking immigrants. The image says, if you come to America to
start a life you should know English. The message being sent about non speaking English immigrants,
is that in America only English speaking people are needed.
4. This quote is targeting Muslims. This quote also says that wearing a women wearing a hijab, which is
worn because of their religion should not wear hijabs because they're in America now, and not their
country where they follow that religion. The message being sent about Muslims is that they are
supposed to not wear hijabs America, because it isn't how Americans should dress.
5. This image is targeting the religion of Islam, and this image says, that Americans have learned what
they needed about the practice of Islam, from one of the most devastating attacks which is known as
9/11 from people who follow Islam, because they believe they did this attack. This message being sent
about people who practice the religion of Islam is that they are terrorists.
6. This image is targeting people who flee their country because of the danger they have faced. This
image says, that Amnesty shouldn't be necessary, and people who faced that danger shouldn't come to
countries which are safe. This message being sent about people who flee their country because of the
danger they face is that they are unwanted and should deal with that so called danger.
7. This image is targeting Chinese immigrants. This image shows, how Americans should not allow
people who are Chinese to enter America, and to prevent Chinese people from coming into America
they should build a wall, and not let them in at all. The message being sent about Chinese immigrants
is that they are undesirable in America.
8. This image is targeting people who aren't Catholic. This image is saying that allowing other people to
practice other religions in the U.S is disgusting. The message being sent about Non-Catholics is that
they are unnecessary in America.
9. This image is targeting people who seek refuge in America. This image says allowing immigrants into
America, will lessen the overall population of whites compared to immigrants, and the whites wants to
be bigger than immigrants. So allowing immigrants to come into America should come to an end. The
message being sent about Immigrants is that they are taking over America by the second.
10. This quote is targeting Japanese people. This quote says Japanese people will never genuinely pledge
their allegiance to the country, and that makes them dangerous to society and to America. The
message being sent about Japanese people is that they are unloyal.

Analyze Evidence

1. I found telling non speaking English immigrant told that if you live in America you should speak english
disturbing because it's genuinely disgusting to tell someone to speak a certain language, because
you're not accustomed to new languages in the U.S.
2. I was not surprised by the levels of anger in these quotes/images because we have lived in a society for
so long, that white Americans act as if they are entitled, and have never been used to other groups
seeking refuge in the U.S, because whites like to be in charge of anything, and they'll do anything to get
their way. This is why i'm not surprised by the levels of anger many immigrants have faced in society
for so long.
3. The common myths, stertypes, or prejudices about immigrant that appear many times for different
groups are that they are “rapists, in gangs, stealing jobs, and not paying taxes” these are common
stereotypes placed on immigrants in society.
4. The same myths would be applied to immigrant groups from very different countries and cultures
because the central idea is, whites are afraid that immigrants will overpower them, and eventually find
ways to spread diversity in America, which is the opposite of what whites want, in all honesty
immigrants are not wanted in the United States.
5. The groups that are considered “native” in particular time period are not always the same, over time
those groups change, by saying that they usually go off to other countries and those “natives” way of
thinking is different then from how it originally used to be, because they are exposed to different
traditions, and get raised differently. This is why native groups change.
6. We do still apply the the anti immigrant myths, stereotypes, or prejudices used in the past to the same
ethnic and cultural groups because, unfortunately whites have been taught for generations that those
ethnic groups will always be considered below them, and as new generations are born, they are taught
the same thing repeatedly about those ethnic groups. This is why anti immigrant myths have been
placed on immigrants, and are still in use today.
7. Anti-immigrant myths today are similar to the ones from the past, even though they target different
ethnic and cultural groups because the same idea of immigrants has been passed down generation by
generation. This is why anti immigrant myths are the same from the past, even though they target
different racial groups.
8. People create or spread anti immigrant myths, stereotypes, or prejudices because they fall in the
category of white Americans, and don't want to be overpowered by another group who isn't white,
therefore Whites, tend to spread those myths, stereotypes and prejudices that are placed on
immigrants.
9. Nativism is a reaction to feeling threatened because they are not yet comfortable with the idea, of other
people who are of a different complexion overpowering them in society just yet, and they find name
calling to be an efficient way to get rid of immigrants, or to make them appear bad to others in society.
This is what Nativistm means in my own words.
10. These myths, stereotypes, or prejudices affected the human rights of immigrants over the years by
making immigrants feel worthless and usually immigrants rights aren't valued, and over time every
name which has been placed on immigrants are viewed as true, and have found ways to stick on a
person, every move an immigrant makes get over analyzed more then normal, and when they get over
analyzed name calling begins, and these behaviors influence how society views every single immigrant
today in society! Which unfortunately, hurts the human rights of immigrants over time.
