Chapter 1

Introduction and Background of the Study

Introduction

Smartphone is a cell device that compute and can connect to internet

connection, more than half of the world’s population is using smartphones, and the

number is still counting, However, it was quickly understood that the convenience

brought about by the widespread use of smartphones also causes some problems for

the individual. Problematic use of smartphones; such as excessive use, i.e. spending

more time on smartphones than planned (Caplan & High, 2006).

Unfortunately, the smartphone that gives convenience to people can become a

psychological stress and depression (Elhai, Dvorak, Levine, & Hall, 2017; Samaha &

Hawi, 2016; Thomée, Härenstam, & Hagberg, 2011), (d) poor sleep quality (Li, Lepp, &

Barkley, 2015; Soni, Upadhyay, & Jain, 2017), and (e) low academic performance

(Alosaimi, Alyahya, Alshahwan, Al Mahyijari, & Shaik, 2016; Hawi & Samaha, 2016;

Junco & Cotton, 2012; Lepp, Barkley, & Karpinski, 2015; Samaha & Hawi, 2016). In

particular, adolescents and young adults spend a great portion of their day using their

smartphones (Kumcagiz & Gunduz, 2016) as an intense and passionate means of

communicating with their friends; transferring their experiences as well as following the

“daily progress” of others in social media posts. Most teens are actively engaged in

SNSs (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.) use on their smartphones (Gezgin &

Çakır, 2016) and as Sterling (2017) suggests, around 80% of social media activities

are carried out over smart mobile devices. However, it is also reported that the

problematic and excessive use of smartphones, especially due to binging on SNS,

SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion

San Mateo, Rizal

leads to an increase in psychological problems worldwide, mainly among young

people (Bianchi & Phillips, 2005; Biglu & Ghavami, 2016).

In educational part, smartphones can be a source of great disruption in

workplaces and classrooms, as they provide individuals with access to texting, games,

social media and internet. Given these features, mobile phones have the potential to

reduce the attention students pay to classes and can therefore be detrimental to

learning (Beland & Murphy, 2015). There are debates in many countries as to how

schools should address the issue of mobile phones. Some advocate for a complete

ban while others promote the use of mobile phones as a teaching tool in classrooms

(Sandoval, Dale & Reuven, 2015).

It was found that the increase in mobile phone usage was mostly related to self-

insecurity, social incompatibility, frequent morale, and anxiety. Moreover, overuse of

mobile phone has been associated with passive - aggressive personality disorder,

obsessive, schizoid, borderline features and hypomania. It has also been found that

increased need for mobile phones is also associated with antisocial tendencies. Lee

(2006) found a negative relationship between shyness and mobile phone usage and

mobile usage motivation. Also, the presence of applications that allow text messages

on the smartphone causes shy people to prefer written applications rather than face-

to-face communication. In addition, the internet on smartphones is able to isolate shy

people from situations where they are uncomfortable with applications such as games.

According to Bian and Leung (2015), shy individuals are more prone to smartphone

addiction. It has been seen that people with low self-esteem overuse mobile phones

and use mobile phones to increase their low self-esteem (Phillips, Ogeil &

Blaszczynski, 2011).

Chapter 2

Review Related Literature

In this chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the

researchers have perused to determine what are already known and come up with the

things that still have to be investigated. This chapter also provides an overview of the

previous researches that support the study being conducted.

Purpose of Smartphone to the Students:

Smartphones have created a special area in our lives. The smartphone boom

was created by Apple once it launched iPhone in 2007. Since

then each different smartphone manufacturer is making an attempt its best to

SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion

survive within the over competitive smartphone market. Mechanical man and Windows

Phone OS area unit the platforms that area unit the foremost innovative outcomes of

this race

There are many purposes of smartphones to the student, this helps them to

improve more their study habits, and this will give them more knowledge about their

surroundings. It also helps them to entertain themselves, used for locating a place,

have awesome photographs, improve their own talent, and not less than a translator.

“Smartphones provide the ability to get answers quickly. A student may not ask

for clarification to a question he or she has in an open classroom hence the use of a

smartphone in a classroom setting can provide those answers.” (Parris, 2013)

According to (Parris, 2013), that using a smartphone inside the classroom can

help students find appropriate answers to those they do not understand. It will also

help the students with less knowledge about words they do not know.

Life style:

According to Morley (2002), nowadays most of the students have cellphone; this

is due to the improvement of living standards and changes of globalization. Initially

used cellphone to communicate with parents, but it has one generation by a few

students who used to be immoral. Therefore, the impact of mobile applications for

students will now be highlighted and a solution to fix the problem and see how this

phone apps big impact on students.

The main purpose of mobile applications is to create a highly skilled and

educated peoples or learners in the everyday life. Due to this, it is good to provide

applications tools like internet, network hardware and software and other equipment
SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion

and services associated with these technologies in order to go similar with

globalization. So the integration of mobile applications in academic performance will

help learners (students) to expanding learning opportunities and ensuring educational

equality and relevance and many changes that occurring every day in our lifelike

globalization, education systems etc.

Also the impact of mobile applications on students’ academic performance

currently in relation to use of digital media, primary computers and internet to facilitate

in learning. This means that direct link between mobile applications and students study

habit and academic performance has been the focus to improving the communication

between them and lecturers.

“Along with their books and school supplies, most high school and college

students -- and many younger students -- make their daily trip to school with their

trusty smartphone.” (Schreiner, 2018)

A study conducted by (Schreiner, 2018) said that the student trust their

smartphones in their daily trip to school. Some of them don’t need books because they

have files in their smartphones and this will help them to study or to understand more

about their daily lesson in schools.

“Mobile phone is wasting the student’s precious time and money. Moreover it

has increased the rate of telling lie among students. It has also put everlasting impacts

on our culture.” (Javid, Malik, and Gujjar, 2011)

Using smartphone can waste the student’s money and precious time, many of

the students try or always tell a lie and it is the effect of social media for them. And it

might destroy the relationship between students and teachers/parents.

SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion
Region IV-A CALABARZON, District of San Mateo Page | 9

But according to (Parris, 2013)

“Smartphones can allow students to work in groups on projects, sharing

information and discoveries. Therefore, the students can move toward a common goal,

in a format they are comfortable using.” (Parris, 2013)

The smartphones allow the students to work on group project and it do not

waste their time and money, rather it help them to save time and money because they

can work at home with their groupmates, by sharing their own information and

discoveries.

Synthesis

A description of smartphones along with its impact on academic performance of

higher learning students have been clearly provided together with the advantages and

disadvantages of having smartphones in students and School.

Some researchers agree that, smartphone as a tool can help students to

achieve or perform well in his/her studies but other students argue that, smartphones

is a tool which hinders students in getting deserved score in their studies for example

one student stressed that students use smartphones for cheating in examinations by

taking snapshots and share them in a group of let say Group chat.
SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion

San Mateo, Rizal

In Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU), this type of cheating is strictly prohibited

because students are not allowed to enter in an examination room with their mobile

phones. In this study, it was revealed that there is a great connection between age,

gender and marital status on the addiction towards the use of smartphones in Schools

and students in large in relation to the academic performance

Chapter 3

After the test conceptualization, the researchers reviews the perception of the

beneficiaries. The researchers identify the impact of using smartphone in the study

habits of the students.

Step 3: Developing the Test Items

The researchers decode the number of the test items which will be constructed.

All the questions are related to the statement of the problem of the study. Each

questions will analyze and also edited to the chosen expert by the researcher to check

all the questions and give some technical concerns for the panel of experts to have

more suggestions to further the questionnaire has been good. Also, the instrument

were given to each panel is to assess the relevance of each item which will be the

basis whether each item will be acceptable or discarded.

Step 4: Conducting Test Dry-Run

The test dry run will be conducted to the Grade 11 Students in San Mateo

Senior High School. Letters was sent from the school head of SMSHS asking

permission to conduct the test dry run as well as to establish the confidentiality of the

respondents.

The dry-run was given much focus and attention so that all matters will be given

consideration in revising the instrument.

Step 5: Establishing the Test Validity and Reliability

The researchers need the help of the experts in order to establish the validity

and reliability of the instrument being used during the conduct of the study the

researchers ask the help by the expert to check the content as it’s a line to statement

of the problem of the research being conducted. The researchers also ask the help of

the English teacher to check the grammar and the used of specific words for the

formulation of questions.

Step 6: Preparing the Final Form of the Test

After conducting the test-dry run and establishing the test validity and reliability,

the researcher consults again the panel of experts for some final comments and

recommendations. Then the final draft was done.

Data Gathering Procedure:

The data gathering used a survey questionnaire. Each respondent will give a

survey questionnaire which is formulated by the researcher.

In the data gathering procedure, the researcher will make two letters. One is for

the approval of the study and another one is for the permission to conduct the study.

The researcher will go to the San Mateo Senior High School coordinator Mrs. Rowena

Buñag, then another letter will be sent to the teacher in every Grade 11 classroom to

allow the researchers to gather data.

Out of 209 respondents, 85 students said that they always use their smartphone

in terms of their study, this is 40% of the total respondents. While 71 students said that

they often use their smartphone to their study, that’s the 34% of the respondents. 41

students said that they sometimes use theirs smartphones in their study and that’s the

20% of the respondents. Then 8 students said that they seldom use their smartphone

in their study and that’s the 4% of the total respondents. And 4 students said that they

never use smartphones in their student habits because they don’t have any

smartphones and that’s 2% of the total respondents, therefore, the usage of

smartphone in terms of study is a big factor affecting the students study habits, based

on the data gathered, 40% of the respondents said that they always use smartphones

in their studies, it is positively affecting the students academically, it is parallel to the

statement of Kibona and Mgaya (2015) that the smartphone usage positively affect the

students academically.

Out of 209 respondents, 56 students said that the social media always affect

their study habits, this is 27% of the total respondents. While 62 students said that the

social media are often affect to their lifestyle, that’s the 29% of the respondents. 58

students said that the social media are sometimes affect their daily lifestyle and that’s

the 28% of the respondents. Then 19 students said that the social media are seldom

affect their daily lifestyle and that’s the 9% of the total respondents. And 14 students

said that the social media never affect their daily lifestyle because they don’t have any

smartphones and that’s 7% of the total respondents. Social media has a high

percentage that most likely affect student academic performance negatively, it is

parallel to the statement of Jennifer walsh (2013) that students who spent most of their

time using smartphone has a high possibility of having fewer academic performance,

such as completing homework and attending class, lower academic confidence and

more problems affecting their school works, and the top of that is lack of sleep.

Out of 209 respondents, 14 students said that mobile games are always help

them to relax their mind and to have a rest, this is 7% of the total respondents. While

11 students said that mobile games are often help them to relax, that’s the 5% of the

respondents. 38 students said that mobile games are sometimes help them in their

study habits and that’s the 18% of the respondents. Then 47 students said that mobile

games are seldom help them in their study habits and that’s the 23% of the total

respondents. And 99 students said that mobile games are never help them in their

study habits because they don’t have any smartphones and that’s 47% of the total

respondents, the effect of mobile games depends on how the students interpret the

information’s coming from mobile games according to Korkmaz (2015) that there are

different ways of learning in smartphones, the game based mobile learning, note taking

using mobile tools video based and search engine based learning, however the

learning of the students depends on what are their usual study habits.

Based on the result of the data gathered, it can be observed that social media

has a negative effect on students meanwhile their usage of smartphone in terms of

their lifestyle help the students to improve their daily lifestyle .

Problem 2: Is there a mobile addiction affecting students Lifestyle?

While. 41 students said that mobile addiction often affect their study habits and that’s

the 20% of the total population of the respondents. Then, 63 respondents said that

sometimes mobile phones affect their study habits and that’s the 30% of the

respondents. 35 respondents said that they’re seldom addicted to mobile phones

and that’s the 20% of the total respondents. And 34 respondents said that mobiles

can be said from the data that smartphone addiction is a big factor affecting the

students study habits however, based on the data that we gathered there is no

mobile addiction that can affect the students study habits.

Problem 3: What are the positive and negative effect of using smartphones in

tools because if our computers are not working, we can use our smartphones for

educational purposes. And the second positive point of using smartphones is to

communicate. With smartphones you can communicate with anyone from anywhere at

any time. Smartphones have come into existence which not only help you in making

calls, but also help you to stay entertained by allowing you to play games, listen to

music and do lots of other stuff.

Based on the data gathered the following are negative effects of using

smartphones in the daily lifestyle of Grade 11 students.

It is true that smartphones can help students in studies but only if they use them

wisely. Most of the students become addicted to smartphones and are found playing

games, chatting with their friends and watching movies and other stuff. If students are

busy keeping their eyes on their smartphones at all times they won’t get time for

studying which would lead to poor grades.

These were the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones. In the end, it all

depends on our usage. Smartphones are the most personal device to us and we

should make an optional use of them.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter presents the summary of the research work undertaken, the

conclusion drawn and the recommendations made as an outgrowth of this study.

Summary of Findings:

The main objective of the study was to assess the factors affecting the

lifestyle and to attain the effects of using smartphone in the study habits of Grade 11

student of San Mateo senior high school.

The respondents of the study is composed of four hundred thirty eight (438)

Grade 11 students of San Mateo Senior High School during the SY 2018-2019. The

researcher used stratified probability sampling to have an equal chance of being

chosen as respondents for the study.

To gather the data, the researcher use survey questionnaires to be

answered by the respondents. The questionnaire contains the demographic profile of

the respondents and questions that are related to our statement of the problem.

The process of data analysis, the researcher will tabulate the data that they

gathered from the selected respondents of the Grade 11 students in San Mateo Senior

High School and will show the distribution according to their gender, age and strands

to get the frequency and percentage of the students who respond to the questionnaire.

It is said that the smartphones really affect the student’s lifestyle, it help

them to increase their knowledge, help them in their every day school life, and it help

their boredom to decrease.

SAN MATEO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Inquiries, Investigation & Immersion

San Mateo, Rizal

But there are also there are also a negative effect of them, just like: the

smartphones delay their daily activities, the smartphones increase their tiredness, and

they can’t do their daily life routine.

Conclusion:

The results of the study are presented according to the order of the statement of

the problem presented in Chapter 1.

1. According to the data that the researcher gathered, the smartphones really

help the students in their study. This proves that the smartphones help the student to

increase their scores in every exam they take.

Social media really affects the students’ lifestyle. It said that sometimes the

social media help them. Specially, the social media helps them to know the daily news

that happened in the world. It also help them to increase their knowledge in terms of

their school activities.

The mobile games affect the students study habits. It because mobile games

always distract their work. They do can’t work well because of the mobile games. And

it make their grades decrease.

2. Based on the results of the survey, there are a lots of students who are

addicted to social media. They sometimes use is 30-45 minutes every hour. Also,

mobile addiction affect their lifestyle and their house hold works, they always feel tired

every hour. But there are small group of students who don’t affect with this kind of

addiction.

3. According to the data that the researcher gathered, there a lot of positive

effect of using smartphone in the students lifestyle. The number 1 of them is the

smartphone help them to improve their academic skills, it also help them to learn more

about their topics, and it help them to make their assignments. And the smartphones

also help them to destroy their boredom. But there are also negative effect of

smartphones to the students, just like: they can’t do their daily routine and their

activities are always delay because of smartphones.

Recommendation:

In the light of the findings and conclusions, the following are recommended:

1. Parents may able to watch their children while using their smartphones if the

students are using it in term of their lifestyles.

2. The students must be aware of the effect of the smartphones in their lifestyle.
3. Future researchers are encouraged to conduct a similar study with a higher

number of respondents to generalize the conclusions.

4. The students must be aware of the effect of the smartphones in their lifestyle.
