HABITAT

THE PLACE WHERE A PLANT OR ANY LIVING

THING LIVES NATURALLY

ADAPTATION

• FEATURES THAT HELP PLANTS AND

ANIMALS TO ADJUST THEMSELVES TO THEIR
NATURAL SURROUNDING OR HABITAT

BASIC NEED FOR PLANTS

• AIR
• WATER
• SUNLIGHT
CONTROLLING FACTORS

• DESERT
• Deserts receive very scanty rainfall.
• Lack of water is the controlling factor in the
desert
• All plants need water They get very little in
the desert.
• Plants living in dry areas are called
XEROPHYTES
• SALINE COASTAL LINE
• Saline coastal line has too much water. Water
contains a potential killer---Salt!
• Saline water is the controlling factor in
coastal line
• All plants need water. They get salty water in
saline coastal line.
• Plants living in salty areas are called
HALOPHYTES
• EXAMPLES
• DESERT
• CACTUS
• DATE PALM
• OCTILLO BUSH

• SALINE COASTAL LINE

• MANGROVES

• ADAPTATIONS
STEMS
• DESERT
• Stems are green and have chlorophyll
• Most of them have fleshy stem called
succulents that store water
• Stored water in an arid environment requires
protection from thirsty animals.
• Most succulent plants are spiny, bitter or
toxic, and often all three.
• SALINE COASTAL LINE
• They have hard strong woods
• LEAVES
• DESERT
• Leaves are needle-shaped to reduce surface
area for transpiration and to resist wind
damage.
• Sunken stomata to create high humidity and
reduce transpiration.
• Thick waxy cuticle on the epidermis to
prevent evaporation from leaf surface.

• SALINE COASTAL LINE

• The Red Mangrove also has a thick waxy
coating on its leaves prevent evaporation
from leaf surface.
• Salt glands are there in leaves to excrete the
excess salt
• Salt may accumulate in older leaves before
they fall
• ROOTS
• DESERT
• Some plants have very long roots to search
for water deep down in sand dunes
• Some plants have widespread roots to
absorb maximum water
• SALINE COASTAL LINE
• Water soaked mud lacks oxygen .
• Specialized root
structures (pneumatophores) allow
mangroves to live in oxygen-poor
sediments.These are called breathing roots
that help in gas exchage.
• Prop roots supply air to the underlying roots
and provide support and stability to the
mangrove. They also trap mud and silt that
flows with the tide, thus gradually increasing
the soil around them.
• FLOWERS
• Desert
• Flowers open out in night when cooler
• They use Bat for pollination
• Saline Coastal Line
• Seeds germinate before they drop from
parent plant. They stay attached until
developed enough to survive on their own .
• When the fruit falls this root lodges in the
soil and the top begins to grow immediately.
This is a unique plant adaptation to the wet
environment called vivipary
