30.

1. Identify two characteristics that mollusks and annelids have in common

Both are invertebrates and have advanced internal transport systems and a true coelom

2. Summarize six characteristics common to most groups of mollusks

They are soft, invertebrates, they have an unsegmented body, they have a shell of calcium
carbonate, they I’ve in aquatic environments and they are mantles.

3. Describe how a nephridium functions in waste removal

The waste is carried through a tube and out the anus

4. Compare the distinguishing features of each of the three major classes of mollusks

Gastropoda- foot comes out of stomach area, has bilateral symmetry, with/without shells,
can live in and out of water, has radula ( razor like tongue), snails, slugs

Bivalves- 2 shells that are hinged together (clams, muscles, scallops, oysters), has a soft
body surrounded by mantle, filter feeders or use straw-like organ to collect food/water.

Cephalopods- tentacles come out of head, large head with brain, octopus/squid, move
using jet propulsion, squirts ink to get away from predators

5. A chemical pollutant accidentally spills into a bay. One of the effects of this chemical is that it
paralyzes cilia. The next day almost all of the oysters in the bay are dead. Develop a hypothesis
that explains why the oysters died

Oysters are filter feeders, this means they suck in and eat what they can. This causes them to
eat things that have cilia which is most likely the cause of them dying

30.2

1. Summarize how you can tell if a wormlike organism is an annelid worm

Annelids are segmented they posses both a reproductive system and a digestive system as
well as a circulatory system

2. Relate an annelids septa to its overall body plan

Annelids body’s are separated by internal walls called septa. Their body segments are
virtually identical to one another. Each one is modified to perform its own function. Their body is
divided into three sections; the head, the trunk, and the pygidium.

3. Describe the major features of an earthworms digestive system

The earthworms digestive system includes; the pharynx, the esophagus, the crop, the
intestine and the gizzard

4. Compare the external appearance of marine annelids, earthworms, and leeches

They are all segmented. Earthworms are thin, elongated and round. Leeches are flat, and
short.

5. An earthworm is born with no moisture secreting cells in its skin. A student concludes that
the earthworm will not survive as long as an earthworm that has these cells. Evaluate this
conclusion

I conclude that the earthworm will die. Earthworms need moisture in their bodies or their
bodies will dry out and they will die.
