Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial:

- When we divide a polynomial by a monomial we are

simplifying a fraction.

- The following examples mean that each term in the

numerator shares a common denominator.

Example: Simplify the following.

3 2 6 2 3 2 3 -1
a. 18a + 30a b. (24xy - 40x y ) (4x y )
3a

Example:
2 2 -1
(6xy - 3xy + 2x y) (xy)

Dividing Polynomials using Long Division:

- When dividing polynomials we use an algorithm, which is a step-by-step

procedure for making calculations.

NEED:
1. To have the terms written with the exponents in decreasing order.

2. We also need to add in any missing terms with a zero coefficient.

3. Then we use an algorithm similar to the algorithm used in the long

division of whole numbers.

Factoring out the Greatest Common Factor:

Find factors of 4x + 2.

2
Find factors of 6x + 2x.

Note: Since both 2 and x are factors, 2x is the

greatest common factor, or GCF.
