Similar and Congruent Triangles Review Math 1

Mathematics Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to define ‘similar’ and ‘congruent’. Students will also be able to analyze
sets of triangles and determine if the triangles are either congruent or similar to a base triangle.
Students will be able to prove constructionally, and computationally, whether triangles are
congruent or similar. Students will be able to distinguish between similar and congruent
triangles.

Language Objectives:
Students will make the connection between SAS, SSS, and ASA. Students will be able to
identify the different situations where SAS, SSS, ASA, and AAA will apply. Students will
compare and contrast the different uses of SAS, SSS, and ASA, with AAA. Students will be able
to create constructions based on these rules of congruence and similarity.

Essential Question:
What benefits and limitations would you encounter if you could only use one specific shape to
create?

Common Core State Mathematics Standards:

NC.M2.G-CO.8
Justify the ASA, SAS, and SSS criteria for triangle congruence. Use criteria for triangle
congruence (ASA, SAS, SSS, HL) to determine whether two triangles are congruent.
NC.M3.G-CO.14
Apply properties, definitions, and theorems of two-dimensional figures to prove geometric
theorems and solve problems.
NC.M3.G-MG.1
Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations:
• Use geometric and algebraic concepts to solve problems in modeling situations:
• Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties, to model real-life objects.
• Use geometric formulas and algebraic functions to model relationships.
• Apply concepts of density based on area and volume.
• Apply geometric concepts to solve design and optimization problems.

Notes to the reader:

You as the teacher should have already covered the definitions of all of the rules for similarity
and congruence (SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAA), this lesson should serve as a review and as a fun
collection of all information discussed so far. Other than previous knowledge, this lesson does
not require anything from the teacher before the class begins. No homework or directions are
necessary before starting this lesson.
