RE:SOLUTIONS 2018 - AIGA
WORKSHOP: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR FONTS
FEBRUARY 3, 2018 | 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM | ROLLINS COLLEGE
“Re:Solutions 2018” was part of a week-long event called AdX Orlando, which was
sponsored and coordinated by several organizations such as AMA (American
Marketing Association), AAF (American Advertising Federation), AIGA (American
Institute of Graphic Arts) and many more. Re:Solutions 2018 was an entire day of
networking and workshops about logo creation, fonts and motion graphics. The
event took place at Rollins College and was hosted by AIGA, specifically.

I was very interested in this event because it was strongly related to design
MARY
CATHERINE and offered networking opportunities after the workshops. It was completely
PFLUG
different from the usual panels and breakfasts. The workshop I selected was
“Make the Most of Your Fonts” because I wanted to learn more about the creation,
purchase and licensing of fonts. Due to my background in Digital Arts and Design,
ME
I understand the importance of fonts and its usage — how its aesthetics also
communicates a message besides the words written. The workshop was taught
by Mary Catherine Pflug, foundry specialist from MyFonts, hosts of the largest
collection of fonts ever assembled. She provided very helpful resources about
fonts during her presentation and shared various insights about her job.
@aigaorlando
We were a very diverse group interested in the beauty of fonts. I got to meet
several professionals within the field and very talented freelancers. We also
received a lot of goodies throughout the presentation such as pins, font discounts,
curved rulers to create our own fonts and more. It was indeed a fun learning
experience. I’m glad I attended this event.

ME AT THE EVENT
The workshop took place in one of the classrooms at the Bush Science Center in
Rollins College. Notice I’m next to Mary Catherine Pflug in front of the classroom
where the workshop took place. AIGA also took pictures of everyone during the
workshops and shared them on their Instagram profile.

BUSINESS CARDS

Mary Catherine Pflug is one of many foundry specialists at

MyFonts in Boston. She taught the workshop and provided very
helpful resources. Her entire presentation, actually. She welcomed
us to share it with our friends and co-workers.

I approached her after the workshop and she was genuinely

nice and sweet. She was flattered to have students in the room
interested about fonts. There were two SVAD students (UCF’s
Graphic Design program) and me. She also offered to assist me
via email with any questions I might have later on.

Mary Catherine is in charged of many administrative/business

related tasks at MyFonts. She mentioned they are currently
working on improving the WhatTheFont! app, which is a search
engine to identify fonts using image recognition.

VALERIE SERVIGNA
Valerie Servigna is a Digital Arts student from Stetson University,
completing a Certificate in Community Engagement. She
is currently doing freelance work as well as volunteering in
the Bonner Program at Stetson to support local non-profit
community partners and doing leadership training with
other students.

When the workshop started, we were asked to present ourselves

and Valerie mentioned she was from Venezuela — just like I am.
This fact made me approach her right away because we had
something in common. I felt very comfortable talking to her.

Valerie welcomed me to review her online portfolio and it was

pretty good. We connected through LinkedIn and Faceboook.
This workshop definitely served as a networking experience too.
