 Module 1 Discussion: What is Art?

Comments

What is Art?
Art is an expression of ones thoughts and feelings through color, shape and
patterns. At times, they use it for advertisement, creations, and to tell stories.
Milton Glaser (Graphic Designer- Youtube Video) explained it best that art helps
our minds reengage ourselves with reality. He also told us it is a surviving
mechanism for our culture. Art helps the mind help others understand things in
different ways. We can use it to help use and develop our brain to function at its
fullest capacity. The mind is a visual learner, meaning what it sees teaches
humankind how to act, what to do, and to help understand.
Art at time is has different meaning to each and every person. Within art,
symbolism helps us comprehend what is trying to be told. Picasso found art
worrisome because he thought that people would miss the larger point.
(Understanding Art Pg. 3)
I believe one of the best ways of recognizing art is the value of art. This helps us
see the lightness and darkness through out an image helping bring the picture to
life. Contrast, volume, color, and texture are also valuable uses within creating
what we call art today.
Art can consist of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and any type of visual imaging.
One thing that has stuck out to me is that there is so much art we see throughout
our day. Logos are one of the biggest forms of art, also known as shape icons.
For example in the textbook Understanding Art (pg. 26 Fig.2.34), The company
Apple uses an apple with a bite taken out of it. This shape is now recognizable all
over the world for high end electronics. And other companies as well use these
shapes to help people remember their product and their company.
In conclusion, Art is used to represent many different things. Humankind would
not be the same today. It is vital for progression and advancement within the
world. Through art we are able to see and learn things that we had not known
before. Art is an expression of ones thoughts and feelings

 Module 2 Discussion: Fav Media Discussion

I really enjoyed the painting section so far. I thought it was amazing the things
you can create with just a brush. My grandfather showed me this painting. I really
helped me understand what art is. I kind of thought art was useless and it was
just a hobby but I think its a great way of capturing so much in just one image.
The name of both paintings are Sierra Nevada & Storm in the Rocky
Mountains by Albert Bierstadt. This medium is oil on canvas I think the biggest
strength of this picture is him being able to use light as a way of illuminating the
picture but at the same time being able to still make a shadow over the valley. I
am an outdoors person so paintings like these bring back a lot of memories.

 Module 3 Discussion: Your Creative Art Project and Artist's Statement

This project was inspired by going to the zoo with my wife and family. I love
animals so I thought I would try drawing one. I used alot of shading and tried to
make the image as 3D as possible. It did not work exactly the way I wanted but
for me I was happy with the end results. I do not draw. I actually really dislike it
but I didn't want to do any of the other alternatives so I gave it a shot. I took me
alot of a tempts just to get the head of the giraffe the way I wanted. I can't take
full credit for this idea because I saw it a few years ago and could not find it on
the internet so I had to guess. I just remember the elephant and the giraffe. So I
gave free minding it my best shot. Hope you like it. I ended up having to tape
more pieces of papers to it to fit it all.

 Module 4 Discussion: Ch 16-17-18 Your Favorite Pieces

 I liked the High Renaissance Period. Michelangelo and Da Vinci really had a lot
of impact on art. They were one of the beginning of of great new art. I think they
started the basis of what we call painting and sculptures today. Artist now look to
them as they create. I watched this 20 min video which helped me understand
what I read in the text book. I think the fundamental characteristic of people in the
paintings was best distinguish in the high renaissance period. Especially the
painting of Christ and the last supper. The Mona Lisa became a
great art piece as well still well known today. These were my
favorite pieces from the chapter.

 Module 5 Discussion: "Lovin' It" (Modern Art Periods) Comments

I really thought there were great images portrayed with in this module. I really
enjoyed Realism and Cubism.
Realism:
I feel like the importance of bringing a painting to a viewer in a realistic way is
very important for those that are observing art. I think its also one of the hardest
ways of portraying events. Skilled artist I think master this over years and years
of experience. This picture was very captivating to me. I think it helps us realize
the hardships of these past events and living conditions. I really enjoyed this one
because I could feel like I was looking at these people in real life.
Jean-Francois Millet
Cubism:
This one was weird for me at the beginning but i found to really enjoy it. Creating
a picture through shapes was quite interesting. It seemed very hard but also you
have to really think to see what the image is presenting to you. I think its fun and
creative. Its different from alot of the other art found in the world.
