IV. PROCEDURES
Last meeting we discussed on how to find the area under the standard normal curve
given a specific value/s of z.
1) If to the left of z, use the tabular value.
2) If to the right of z, the area is 1 minus the tabular value.
A. Reviewing previous lesson or 3) if between two values of z, the area is area(z2) – area(z2).
presenting the new lesson Example: Find the area under the standard normal curve given:
a) to the left of z = 1.18 ans. 0.8810
b) to the right of z = 0.28 ans. 0.3897
c) between z - -1.12 and z = 0.55 ans. 0.7088 – 0.1314 = 0.5774

Today, we will be converting normal random variable to the standard normal

B. Establishing a purpose for the
variable. We will also be applying the areas under the standard normal curve to word
lesson problems.
Scenario: The average score of all grade 11 students during the 2nd quarter
examination is 32.3 with a standard deviation of 5.2. a) What is the probability that a
randomly selected student will have a score greater than 38? b) What is the
C. Presenting examples/instances of
probability that a randomly selected student will have a score lower than 35?
the new lesson c) What is the probability that a randomly selected student will have a score between
30 and 36?

To convert a normal random variable to the standard normal variable, z, we use the
z-transformation formula where:
x
z

z  standard normal score
D. Discussing new concepts and x  random score
practicing new skills #1 Where:
  population mean
  population standard deviation
Example: If the population mean is 30 and the population standard deviation is 4,
find the standard normal score for the following values of the random variable.
a) x = 35 b) x = 22 c) x = 28 d) x = 30 e) x = 33
In solving word problems involving the normal distribution, first, determine the given
in the problem, second, convert the normal random variable to its z-score, third find
the area under the normal curve. This area corresponds to the probability of the
event described in the problem.

Let us solve our earlier scenario.

The average score of all grade 11 students during the 2nd quarter examination is
32.3 with a standard deviation of 5.2. a) What is the probability that a randomly

practicing new skills #2 randomly selected student will have a score lower than 35? c) What is the probability
that a randomly selected student will have a score between 30 and 36?
Example 2: The average “baon” of a grade 11 student at Lananpin National High
School is PhP 75 with a standard deviation of PhP 5. a) What is the probability that a
randomly selected student will have a “baon” greater than PhP 78? b) What percent
of grade 11 students have a “baon” less than PhP 73? If there are 105 grade 11
students, how many students will have a “baon” between PhP 72 and PhP 80?

Group the students into 5 members each group. Each group will be given a word
F. Developing mastery (leads to problem involving normal distribution to solve. During the group activity, the teacher
Formative Assessment) supervises the students to make sure that they work harmoniously together and with
G. as little noise as possible.

The standard normal distribution can be used to determine a student’s

performance in an exam by finding if how many percent scored higher or lower than
him/her.
H. Finding practical applications of
The standard normal distribution can also be used to determine the number of
concepts and skills in daily living farmers who harvested less that what one has harvested.
The standard normal distribution is also used to determine the probability of
choosing a specific interval of values in any normal population.
1) The standard normal distribution is a distribution for which type of random
variable, discrete or continuous? Ans. Continuous
2) How will you convert a normal distribution to a standard normal distribution?
I. Making generalizations and
Ans. Use the z-transformation formula.
abstractions about the lesson 3) The area under the standard normal distribution represents what?

The average number of cavans harvested per hectare in barangay Pinmaludpod is 80
cavans with a standard deviation of 6 cavans. a) What is the probability that a
J. Evaluating learning randomly selected farm will yield more that 80 cavans per hectare? b) If there are 95
farms in barangay Pinmaludpod, how many farms will have a yield less that 82
cavans?
