My Philosophy of Student Discipline

My philosophy of student discipline is one that utilizes a structure, a systematic approach

and designed to support learning. Teacher to student relationships, student motivation, and

student behavior generates an atmosphere where student rules are viewed as guidelines for

academic success.

Teacher to Student relationships

A teacher-student relationship can be viewed as a positive experience or a negative

experience depending on which type of teaching style the teacher wants to portray in the

classroom. In my classroom I will be an authoritative teacher, authoritative teacher possesses a

positive dimension of permissiveness and authoritarianism without using negative behavior.

Instead of having the children fear me as the authoritarian teacher does. I will show my students,

tough love, at the beginning of the year, I will be strict on them until they know what my

expectations are of them and then as the year goes on I will ease up a bit. As a result of my

teaching strategies of discipline, I hope to see that my students will feel close to me, and they

feel emotionally safe and secure in my classroom. I also hope that from my positive classroom

environment it helps them to engage in the social world with confidence and learn from their

mistakes. To always learn that if you do make a mistake you just have to reevaluate your plan

and take a chance at it again.

Student Motivation

In order to motivate my students to want to do well for themselves, I will emphasize

cooperation over competition. I will always strive for my students to do everything and giving

110% in everything they do. I will also avoid putting my students up against each other. Instead
of using competition to motivate children to get things done. I will use motivation in a positive

way. For example, using different incentives to display to my students that positive behavior and

cooperation deserves to get rewarded. As well as I will not reinforce a child's behavior expense

of another. For example, if Jolie a student in my classroom always has a clean desk, I won't

announce that Chloe has a messy desk in front of everyone and say that she should be more Jolie.

Instead, I will do different incentives for a clean desk or an organized book bag. I will strive to

focus on individual progress and group accomplishment. In order to show my students that

working together is appropriate in my classroom. In addition, as well as individual awards I will

also have group rewards encouraging teamwork to accomplish a task. For example, I will have a

point system (Class Dojo) and if they get so many points as a class they will receive a special

party.

Student Behavior

Unlike authoritarian teachers who are quick to “jump” on a behavior that is not

acceptable in the classroom. I will use a behavior chart in the classroom and at the end of each

day I will talk to the ones who haven't had a very good day and we will make a plan of how we

will change their behaviors for the next school day. I will make sure that my students are always

getting positive reinforcement and support from me. I will use different methods when getting

the students attention rather than raising my voice because I am a role model and like to portray

desirable behaviors in my classroom. I will enforce modeling and self-regulation in my

classroom. How I will enforce modeling and self-regulation is by drawing the student attention

to what they say or what other people say or do. By enforcing these two roles in my classroom I

hope to help children look at critical details they might otherwise miss.
In conclusion, there are many benefits to being an authoritative teacher versus an

authoritarian teacher. The authoritative approach helps children guide them self to

self-regulation. Also helping them know what is expected of them without raising your voice.

The students develop skills that are necessary to behave. Students tend to be happier,

cooperative, and sensitive to others needs. They're more likely to agree on this temptation and

control their negative impulses. They are also able to maintain positive social interactions and

initiate social plans on their own. This is why I strive to be an authoritative teacher because I

want to be able to change children's lives for the better and for them to have positive experiences

in my classroom
