PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The MS6720 fixed projection scanner consists of one package containing a visible laser diode
(VLD) with a wavelength of 675 nanometers +/-5 nm, photo-detector, scanning optics,
electronics and interface. Power to the scanner is supplied by a host system, which has the
appropriate power, or an external DC power supply. The scan pattern of the MS6720 consists
of 5 fields of 4 parallel lines that sweep across the bar code.

LABELS

Each scanner has a label located on the bottom of the unit. This label contains information such
as the model number, date of manufacture, serial number and approvals. The following is an
example of this label:

MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATION

Metrologic recommends the use of an external power supply with MS6720-47 Keyboard Wedge
applications. Powering the MS6720-47 directly from the computer keyboard connector could
interfere with the operation of the scanner or the computer. Not all computers supply the same
current through the keyboard port, and may cause the scanner to work on the computer and not
another.

MS6720 SIGNAL PROCESSOR CONNECTIONS

PIN SIGNAL NAME FUNCTION

1 RANGE SELECT Open collector input. A LOW on this line will put the scanner object
detect in long range (9” – 13”) activation mode. This line may be left
undetermined for short range (4” – 7”) activation mode. Do not pull
RANGE SELECT HIGH

2 VCC Supply Voltage (+5.0v+/-0.25v)

100mA minimum supply

3 SCAN MODE Digital output; active HIGH. This signal goes HIGH whenever the scan
INDICATOR mode is activated. Maximum current: 1mA.

4 SCAN ENABLE Open collector input; active LOW. A LOW signal applied to this Pin will
activate the scan mode. HIGH or open will deactivate the scan mode.

5 BC DETECT Open collector output; active LOW. This signal goes LOW when the
object that enters the scan field appears to be a bar code. BC
DETECT is only used when the bar code detect feature is enabled.
(i.e. BARSEL1 and BARSEL2 are low).

6 OBJECT DETECT Digital output; active LOW. The object detect is automatically
ENABLE deactivated whenever the scan mode is enabled. A LOW applied to
this input allows for an override so that both the object detect and the
scan mode are active simultaneously.

7 BARSEL2 Digital inputs. These signals are used along with the BC DETECT (Pin
& 5) to determine the presence of a bar code in the scan field. For the
8 BARSEL1 MS6720, these two signals should be tied together and connected to a
single I/O pin. The bar code detect feature can be enabled by pulling
these two signals LOW when the scan mode is not enabled. Then the
scan mode will automatically be entered when an object is detected in
the scan field. If the object appears to be a bar code the BC DETECT
signal goes LOW. The BARSEL pins should then be taken HIGH in
order to disable the bar code detect feature and allow for normal
operation.

9 OBJECT DETECT LCD Digital output; active LOW. A LOW signal indicates an object is within
the scan field the signal remains LOW until the object is removed.

10 VLD STATUS Digital output. A HIGH on this line indicates that the VLD is enabled
and that it is functioning properly. This signal is only valid when the
scan mode is enabled (i.e. Pin 3 is HIGH). Wait 25 ms after activating
the scan mode before checking VLD STATUS.

11 GROUND 0 Volts

12 DATA OUTPUT Digital output. A black bar is indicated by a LOW going pulse. A HIGH
level represents a space.

ADAPTER AND CABLES

The MS6720 non-keyboard wedge units are terminated to a 10 position modular connector.
The head cable can be connected to either of the following depending upon the voltage the host
system can supply.

Ø A Metrologic Connector Adapter (MCA) for a +5VDC input voltage to the scanner
from an external power supply or host system.

Whether the scanner will receive +5V from an external power supply or from the host system,
the head cable will plug into one end of the MCA. The other end of the MCA is a female 9-pin
D-type connector for a communication cable. This can be used to connect the MCA to a
standard 9-pin IBM~PC serial port directly. Typically, in this configuration, a regulated +5V
external power supply that connects directly to the MCA will be used. If, in the application, the
host device will supply the power necessary for the scanner, reposition an internal jumper within
the MCA and plug the 4 position ground jumper to the power supply connector. (Refer to
Scanner Installation: Powered by External Power Supply).

NOTE: Each communication cable is terminated to the specifications of each other.

OPERATIONAL TEST

If the scanner will receive power from an external power supply, test the scanner before it is
connected to the host system.

1. Plug the scanner’s head cable to the MCA.

2. Check the AC input requirements of the power supply to make sure the voltage
matches the AC outlet. Plug the power supply into the MCA and the appropriate
AC outlet. (The socket-outlet can be installed near the equipment and so it will
be easily accessible.)

NOTE: When the scanner first receives power, the red LED will turn on, followed by the green
LED, and then the scanner will beep once. Once the scanner has performed this
startup sequence, use the scanner to practice scanning bar codes.

MS6720
SCANNER INSTALLATION: POWERED BY HOST DEVICE

If the host system supplies +5VDC power to the scanner, reposition the internal jumper within
the MCA before connecting the scanner to the host device. In addition, plug the 4 position
ground jumper to the power supply connector located
outside the MCA.

1. Make sure the MCA is not connector the

Scanner communication cable or PC.

2. Unfasten the MCA case.

3. Reposition the shunt on JP1 to pins 1 and

2 (Refer to Figure 1).

4. Close the case.

SCANNER INSTALLATION: POWERED BY EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY

To maintain compliance with applicable standards, all circuits connected to the scanner must
meet the requirements for SELV (Safety Low Voltage) according to EN 60950.

1. Turn off the host system.

2. If using a communication cable, connect the cable to the correct port on the host device
and the MCA. If the host device is an IBM PC with a male 9-pin serial port, connect the
MCA to the port.

3. Plug the scanner’s head cable to the MCA.

4. Check the AC input requirements of the power supply to make sure the voltage matches
the AC outlet. (A socket-outlet can be installed near the equipment and will be easily
accessible.) Plug the power supply into the MCA and the AC outlet.

5. Turn the host system.

NOTE: When the scanner first receives power, the red LED will turn on, followed by the green
LED, and then the scanner will beep once.

Plugging the scanner into the serial port of the PC does not guarantee that scanned
information will appear at the PC. A software driver and correct configuration setting are
also required for proper communication to occur.

CABLE PIN ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE HEAD CABLE

The MS6720 scanners are terminated to a 10 position

shielded modular connector (Refer to Figure 3). All of
the head cables (MLPN 44530) for the MS6720 scanner
are terminated the same. The difference between
versions is the end of the cable going into the scanner.
This connector plugs into different ‘J’ positions on
various computer/interface boards. Since each Figure 3
computer/interface board is different, the output signals
are different.
