Lesson 8.5 Standard Deviation

I will be able to:

-Evaluate Variance in a set
Objective: of data and use it find other
measures of dispersion.

Statistics that show how data is spread out are called measures of dispersion
such as range(mean, median, mode are measures of central tendency).

Variance is a measure of dispersion.

(2 things in one set of operations)

Steps for finding variance:

1. find the mean of the data set

2. subtract the mean from each
individual data piece
3. square each result
4. find the mean of the new set of data

hence: the mean of the squared differences

What would be the standard deviation for the previous example?

Variance =

Standard Deviation = √

Molly took two tests. Her results are shown to the right. Test A Test B
On which did she score better, compared with the other Molly's score 85 80
students in her class? Mean Score 65 60
Standard Dev 8 10

We can answer this by finding the z-score:

z-score: data - mean

Find +1 Standard Deviation and -1 Standard

Deviation from the average in your set of Data.

Statistic Talk:

Clusters isolated groups of values (a lot of numbers close

together)

Gaps large spaces between the values

Outliers data values that are much greater than or much

less than most other values.

Data that is grouped is often reported using a

frequency table:

A table that displays frequency

counts for categorical data. Usually
found by setting up intervals.

EXAMPLE:

FOR EXAMPLE, THE INTERVAL 40 - 79 WOULD CONTAIN ALL OF

THE NUMBERS BETWEEN 40 AND 79 (INCLUDING 40 AND 79

What is a histogram?
A bar graph in which there are no spaces between the bars.
A frequency table is required to make a histogram***

Homework for 8.5

Make a frequency table and a histogram of your
set of data.

Then find what percent of your data is within +1

and -1 standard deviation from the average.
